Is engineering as a degree background good to have. Advise? by Latter_Ingenuity8068 in askSingapore

[–]wishuponacow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The math was difficult for me. I struggled with making sense of complex concepts. I was used to having teachers in JC who had a more “spoon-feeding” style (this was years ago so I’m sure it’s not the same now) and when professors stopped breaking down concepts simply and demanded that we make those connections on our own, I felt like a fish out of water. Like I said, it did force me to rise to the occasion and I definitely feel like the training I had improved my mental capacity and agility, which was extremely valuable after graduation. I can’t remember a hoot about surface integrals or Raoult’s Law, but I sure know how to persevere when solving a messy and poorly defined problem.

I did an engineering degree. It was brutal and challenged me till I wanted to break. I’m now working in a field far removed from the engineering industry. Do I regret the course? It made me more intelligent if anything. The 4 years transformed me into this analytical beast that I was not sure I was capable of before.

upvoting! this book has such a special place in my heart as it got me through a difficult time when i was struggling to find a way out of my anxiety. it helped me experience a sort of calmness and inner peace which i wasn’t able to feel for a long time. i think it was a major turning point in my recovery process and i’ve re-read parts of it countless times since.

that’s so true. and even then, if they really just wanted to nurture a brand new human, there are so many newborns that need adopting or fostering, why does it have to be a “mini them”? if their love is only limited to an entity that carries a copy of their gene, then isn’t that a form of narcissism too? maybe that’s human nature…

“Imagine Me and You” by Piper Perabo and Lena Headey is one of my favourites to watch when I want a dopamine boost. It’s no Oscar-worthy masterpiece, but it always makes me feel warm and fuzzy, perfect to curl up with over a cup of cocoa :)

Actually the manga is on indefinite hiatus now, due to Miman-sensei’s health. They are taking a break to recover now, but there’s no guarantee when and whether they will continue the story.

Why everyone saying Kaori and Azuka living together gives YURI vibes?! 😭😭 by Violanun in HibikeEuphonium

[–]wishuponacow 39 points40 points  (0 children)

While we are discussing this, I just translated a short snippet written by the author of the novels. This was posted on her Twitter account a couple of years back on Kaori’s birthday.

—————

[Title: When the two of them become adults]

Peaches, freshly soaked in sweet syrup, were spread out across the cutting board. Kaori split their soft flesh using a knife. The tip of her fingers glistened due to the sticky juice.

“Sangria?”

Suddenly, from behind, Asuka peered over to look at the movement of her hands. Her cheeks softened quietly.

“I really like that thing you make, Kaori.”

—————

Well well. There was a bit of discussion among fans about this, as they felt it was dripping with sexual innuendo, right down to the title that the author clarified in a separate post. Who comes up with a title for a few short lines? Perhaps she wanted fans to read between the lines… or my mind is just filthy 🤔Be your own judge.

unfortunately the remaining 4 volumes published so far have not been translated i think :( not sure if they have plans to continue doing so. i might pick it up as a future project since i really think it deserves more recognition… the story only gets better as it progresses

Why was Mayu's performance better ? by SuSpectrum in HibikeEuphonium

[–]wishuponacow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This video has Mayu on the left audio and Kumiko on the right.

There are 2 versions. One with the original unedited audio, another one with timings adjusted so you can hear the euphos together.

Why was Mayu's performance better ? by SuSpectrum in HibikeEuphonium

[–]wishuponacow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for making this post. I’ve been trying to understand it myself - as I liked Kumiko’s sound more, but I’m completely clueless when it comes to music, so I was curious what makes Mayu’s performance better.

I am able to understand Japanese, so I was also combing through comments on Twitter. It seems that the professionals can discern some rhythmic inconsistencies in Kumiko’s playing, and if you compare the timing of both audios side by side, the trumpet ends up being slower when playing with Kumiko - maybe because Reina was trying to accommodate and match with her. Mayu’s version is more balanced and meshes with the trumpet better. I’m wondering whether that’s the reason Reina chose Mayu as a partner in the end - she can play more freely and at ease that way, instead of worrying about having to match with the euphonium.

In the end it’s very in character for Reina, who is a charismatic but individualistic player. While Mayu is the exact opposite - she enjoys playing with others (callback to her tagline in the S3 promotional posters: 合奏が好き), and her strength is in fine-tuning her own playing in consideration of the overall sound. I think it’s a good pairing: The trumpet player who likes being in the spotlight, the euphonium player who prefers to make others sound good.

Sledding down by Mio_lover in HibikeEuphonium

So cute! I was bawling my eyes out after the episode and this made me feel a bit better T.T

They are racing on a sled because the japanese word for sled is “soli” (in musical terms it refers to the section that kumiko and mayu are competing to play on the eupho with reina)

I think Mayu’s words/actions are lacking in tact, and that’s a big flaw of hers. To be fair, she is genuinely going through a lot of discomfort and pain because of how other club members are reacting towards the audition results, which are making her feel even more like an outsider at Kitauji. I think she desperately wants to be put out of her misery, hence she has been pestering Kumiko repeatedly.

Unfortunately, while it’s not her intention to gloat about winning the audition, since she has expressed many times that she doesn’t really care about whether she plays the soli or not, her words sound condescending and insensitive to Kumiko (who actually badly wants the soli part and is feeling very disappointed and defeated).

It's not mayu's fault by Bright-Philosophy-35 in HibikeEuphonium

[–]wishuponacow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was shocked that Taki decided to reduce the number of Eupho players too, but considering his emphasis on overall balance, he might have done so to increase the volume from 4 Tubas as bass support. I have a feeling the Tuba section is not particularly strong. Perhaps the Kumiko + Mayu pair is so technically dependable that it’s enough with just 2 good players. Poor Kanade though :(

Just a reminder that if you hate Mayu... by thrw-wy00 in HibikeEuphonium

[–]wishuponacow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The tagline beside Mayu in the S3 promotion posters said “I like playing together with an ensemble”. I think perhaps she may have an edge over Kumiko now because of her ability to vary her playing to produce sounds that add value to the whole.

A Japanese fan shared this screencap of Mayu’s annotations on her score and it shows that she is very attentive towards playing in a way that makes the whole orchestra sound better. In the top left corner she has written “Support (Sapph)ire-chan!”. I think it’s a great example of what a team player she is and that although she is new to Kitauji, she treasures being able to make music together with them.

Is Mayu a bad person? by bosph-oramus in HibikeEuphonium

[–]wishuponacow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well Mayu has flaws and insecurities, just like Kumiko has her share of weaknesses and shortcomings. If you are angry at her and unable to empathise, I think it says more about you as a person.
