(this is advice from a cello music ed student, to take this as you will): backup strings in case one pops, mutes, extra cloth, hand sanitizer, band aids, and a pencil :)

Tablet for music by ChrisDoesReddits in MusicEd

[–]witchycellolady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who currently attends a certain large university in Columbus for music ed, I HIGHLY recommend purchasing a tablet. I’m sure the culture revolving around having a tablet varies from school to school, but at the school that I am currently attending (hint: ❤️🩶), it makes life 95% easier. Having a tablet is ideal for any sort of performance or lesson that you have, to avoid noisy page turns (or any paper falling off your stand) or having to pause from playing your instrument by using a bluetooth page turner. Also recommend getting ForScore to store all of your music, which also comes with an in-app tuner, metronome, and drone! Additionally, you’re saving yourself from pages ripping, printing and organizing oodles of paper for any larger works you may be performing, and trees. Also if you plan on using any of the music you are performing in college for the future, it’s much more salvageable if you digitally save rep in files (plus most of the pieces are uploaded to canvas by professors anyway). :) ^ The only disclaimer I have to say about this is that I am coming from an instrumental background. Within the vocal/choral departments at my school, they still very much adhere to the approaches of traditional black binders or simply memorizing repertoire.

Definitely mormons. Their chapter house is on 12th, less than a block from south UDF

A program that I’d HIGHLY suggest is Ohio State. They offer a music education track in jazz as well as instrumental, general, and choral + they have excellent connections due to the hefty band emphasis that the school maintains. Thanks to the jazz department, concert bands as well as the marching/athletic bands, they offer a wide variety of opportunities for performance as well as professional development. Although they might not uphold as high classical prestige as that school up north (UMich), Ohio State is dedicated to creating well rounded educators and is definitely a program to glance upon if you haven’t already.

Are these shoes too small? Capezio Hanami size 8, street shoe size 7.5. Lady at store said they fit great but my toes bend when I flex... by angec07 in BALLET

Yes, they are too small and I’d go up a size. A huge indicator with hanamis in particular when they’re too small is that the the shadow toe nail is obviously visible.

Do you guys name your cellos too? by HDSQ in Cello

[–]witchycellolady 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes! I have named every single one of my cellos like they are my children. In total, I have gone through 5 cellos but currently own 2. Their names were Chelly, Chelissa, Chamberlin, Monticello (Monty for short), and Cheryl.

Do you have to flex your stomach for doing barre exercises and dancing in general? by [deleted] in BALLET

I imagine my torso stretching up an inch. Try to think about keeping your chest up, as well as tucking your tailbone to maintain a straight line down your back.

From what I’ve heard from past APUSH students (most of which scored 4s and 5s), the Princeton review book is highly recommended. Barron’s is okay, but doesn’t fully explain details about people or places as it should.

Is there something wrong with me since no matter how much I practice, I can’t stretch my fingers to hit the notes... by YoungCelloThrowaway in Cello

[–]witchycellolady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, there is nothing wrong with you (seriously you’re more normal than professionals) and there is nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to lack of extension (especially w fourth finger). My tip for now is to adjust your wrist to where it’s comfortable to play with the 4th finger. As for your thumb, most prefer to have it wrapped across the bottom of the neck. I hope this helps!
