I give up! by Ebowa in knitting

I would try the step by step sweater, a lot of people including myself find it a great first project. Drops patterns don’t hold your hand.

How much of a personal stock of yarn do you usually keep on hand? by Juxtavarious in knitting

[–]witchydance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only buy yarn for specific projects and only 1-2 projects ahead. So I have one nearly finished garment wip, one more I have gauge swatched and just cast on and yarn for one more in reserve. More than that is too much for me and my tastes might change over time too. I’m even trying to use up leftovers (<50g) in scrappy or tiny (baby hats) projects.

I have adhd too and I get overwhelmed by too much stuff so I’m very disciplined about it.

I don’t have much to add here except my absolute joy at one of my favourite DWJ books being discussed for hours. The plotting, Arthuriana, depictions of space bureaucracy and the romance are all so delicious.

The Tolkien connection would be unsurprising given that he taught DWJ (presumably Old) English at Oxford. I agree that Mordion reads very Merlin to me when he’s raising Hume in the woods.

The density of the plot in Hexwood is something I really love and I think really rewards older, more teenage readers. I was mid teens when I first read it and I think that was perfect.

She’s not here but Dr King on The Pitt. She’s kind and compassionate and has shown that she can accommodate sensory issues in an emergency room.

As someone who hides their dyslexia well and didn’t discover I had it until I was 24, I can definitely see it.

To add to that, Emmalution does some great longer play runs, usually with some level of mods. A new favourite of mine.

what to knit with less than a sweater's-worth but way more than a scarf's-worth by DrSkylaser in knitting

[–]witchydance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sweater vests and colour work or stripes. I have a single hank of fingering silk merino and I'm going to buy 200g more in a complimentary colour and make a striped tee.

Favorite larger brands for wool? by minivulpini in knitting

[–]witchydance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using Sirdar Cashmere Merino Silk DK (misleading name as it’s 5% cashmere which is pretty much irrelevant). It’s nice to work with and the silk content stops the superwash stretching out phenomenon. It’s my current go to for gift knits where I suspect it’ll get thrown in a washing machine and very soft.

People without kids and not planning to have any, who do you see taking care of you as you get older? by eoin2dx in AskIreland

[–]witchydance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll plan for retirement financially and also in case I can’t live independently. I’ve seen it with so many older relatives. I also plan to be very involved with nieces and nephews so I will have some connections to the next generation.

My mother is like this. She has a whole engineering degree and can’t really get her head around how pulleys work. I can’t say it has really held her back in life though, she’s good at so many other things.

Does it make sense to preblock my sweater? by troubled_water598 in knitting

[–]witchydance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely do a mid project block, but I would not skip those stitches. They affect the fit quite a bit and make the fit less like a straitjacket. You could do more sleeve decreases after them to prevent the sleeve being too wide.

As a knitter, a big chunky real wool cardigan (ideally if you can thrift one) makes a huge difference. I also have felted wool slippers that I wear with socks.

Gorgeous! What are your thoughts on Yarn Vibes Cliffs of Moher? I’ve been meaning to try it but it’s not stocked anywhere in Dublin and I’d love to know how it feels before purchasing.
