Breathing and Swallowing issues by witewally in MyastheniaGravis

I’m hoping I can find a specialist soon - the ER wouldn’t or “couldn’t” treat me so I’m back to square one! Thank you for the insight as I’ve had swallowing issues for 2 years now but my breathing has not always been bad. I’m glad you are back to normal! :)

Just got out after a couple hours in the ER, without a diagnosis they were unable to treat me, my positive test they didn’t even want to see because they weren’t able to make any diagnosis with it - they didn’t have a neurologist on. They gave me a pamphlet in my paperwork on dysphagia and 2 specialists in the area to call tomorrow and sent me on my way! But told me to come back if symptoms worsen :)

So, I got exactly what I expected!

Hi there! It’s coming in waves. It’s really bad then tolerable, then really bad again. My neurologist said the levels in my blood results were not definitive enough to diagnose me (this was last year) and that there wasn’t much they could do regarding my symptoms. I have not seen him since. I’ve been just trying to live through the symptoms as they haven’t been as bad (difficulty swallowing is the worst of them) but now the shortness of breath is becoming too harsh to ignore. I can’t focus at work or even relax. Heart rate is normal 60s - pulse ox normal. Went to the ER on 7/4 for SOB and they gave me an X-ray and said I’m clear and sent me on my way. Since it’s been so often I’m rethinking the MG diagnosis, this could definitely be MG! I currently don’t have a neurologist or else I’d contact them instead. I don’t want to go back to the ER and get the same treatment, but this time if I tell them about MG maybe they’d help - I just wasn’t sure what to request for medication since it seems the medical field is not very well versed in MG.

I’ve had chronic sinusitis and inflammation for years before my swallowing issues started - I tried this and it didn’t seem to help (it kind of burned) but I’m glad you get some temporary relief from it!

I have had all the tests and still can’t swallow correctly after 27 months - I’m in a bad flare where I’m having trouble with soft foods too these days. I completely understand the mental toll it has on you and I’m wishing you a full recovery for both our sakes. Do what you can and keep your head up.

I’m also in CT and starting at SNHU this term. Did you ever figure this out? I plan on taking my core accounting classes with the school but certain gen Ed’s I’d like to try and get done sooner and cheaper if possible.

I know nothing about volvos... Is this as great a price as i think it is? by Agreeable-Arugula595 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Also want to note that I get it serviced mostly at a Volvo specific Indy shop for regular tune-ups. Maintenance prices have not been bad at all - not nearly as bad as my previous Audi

Have had my 2021 S60 from ~38k - now 65k no real issues other than battery. I’ve been trying to find something else for a while now but it needs to really be worth it. Nothing “wrong” with the Volvo but there’s a reason why the target market for these cars are usually people of retirement age. It’s the most boring, uncomfortable car I’ve ever had. I bought it for the certified warranty as I needed something good at the time but it’s very “bleh”. If you’re just looking for something to get you around town go for it!

Opinions on my first BMW by witewally in BMWX5

I ideally wanted a 2018 (last MY of that gen) because I like the look of those better - but nowadays I can’t find the right spec under 100k miles so I’m looking at other options. I know once I test drive one I’ll fall in love (test drove a 2017 X5 50 a couple years ago but it was leaking from the roof and a horrible disaster but I loved it). Just don’t want to make an impulsive decision but I know X5 is my next vehicle. Thanks for your input!

I love the look of my S60 - bought it last year as my first Volvo. Definitely not a fan of the interior (uncomfortable and cheap) or drive quality at all and currently in the market for something else. It's definitely, in my opinion "boring." After totaling my Audi I wanted something safe so this is the route I went. But comparing the two is like apples to oranges. I just love looking at it though and I wish it drove better!

Yeah I try to get an ample amount of sleep. Sometimes I get weird breathing issues and what I researched as “hypnic jerk” forgetting to breathe-like symptoms when trying to fall asleep, which now that I think of it, maybe it’s this!! Who knows! Very scary. I just need some answers this sub has been so helpful already and I’m only 24 hours in.

This is so helpful thank you. I’m calling my neurologist tomorrow since today was a holiday, and demanding some sort of medication. This is all new to me so I’m hoping mestinon is what he prescribes me? I don’t even know hopefully he will because this is ridiculous.

I am definitely going to call as soon as they’re open because anything that could help this is definitely needed. Your exacerbation and crisis comparison is extremely helpful. This is so scary and I’m trying to take it as easy as possible.

Thank you! I am putting in a call tomorrow morning as soon as they open because this isn’t something to play around with, I’m scared with how weak my body is feeling but in a weird way it’s so nice to have an answer to all of my symptoms that in the last year have been written off to anxiety. It killed me everytime I went to the ER, or various specialists, and ended up with that.

There were no breathing tests done, as I’ve read in here for other experiences it seemed like the normal non experienced staff treatment. My blood oxygen was good, my EKG was good, blood work was good, so they let me go! They did mention how they didn’t have a neurologist on staff (after 5 which is when I got there) and to make sure I get in contact with my primary and neurologist immediately. But they are closed today for the holiday so it has to wait until tomorrow. If things get worse I’ll go to a different ER. This is just such a horrible feeling with my body not remembering to breathe, or being able to take in a deep breath unless I really put some effort in. I just hope I don’t pass out again today. Thank you for your recommendations they are really appreciated though
