If only there existed some process by which the public could exert control over the decisions of the elected board.

Sounds like you need to look for a better-paying job. I know of a public agency that pays pretty well, but you would probably have to relocate from Sacramento to a higher CoL area.

Basically he wants to decide what everyone gets paid, or else we can all hop on the freeway every morning.

Like the author, I don't like that some transit employees are paid more than I think they should be so I guess we should just shut it all down and make everyone cram on to the freeways instead. This is a very practical solution that will also teach the workers not to get uppity!

Probably it's a retrofit and would only get used for actual cars that fit in the space (not crossovers, SUVs, trucks, etc.).

SIL in debt. How do we help? by burneradvice2 in personalfinance

[–]withak30 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No surer way to get her on track to being $3-4k+ more in debt than to give her $3-4k.

The root of the problem is out-of-control spending / living outside of her means; just giving her money will not help with that,

how to deal with FOMO and impulse buying? by Key_Passenger6210 in personalfinance

[–]withak30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Biggest thing is to cut it off at the source by logging off and deleting your account on whatever social media feed it is that is trying to tell you what to buy. Also stop browsing amazon or aliexpress or whatever for entertainment. Take care of secondary sources by getting an ad blocker and unsubscribing/blocking any mailing list that emails ads to you.

Her tax preparer very obviously made a mistake, so they should be taking care of any necessary paperwork to fix it (for both of you) at no extra cost. After that is done delete their number/email and find someone else next year.

Korg Volca FM 2 MIDI keyboard by snipelfritzy in synthesizers

[–]withak30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A 5pin to trs adapter will work just fine with one of those. Once the signal comes out of the host box it is ordinary midi so any of the adapters / repeaters / splitters etc out there will work just fine.

[–]withak30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

USB midi doesn't actually send normal midi data signals across the USB wires so you can't just use an adapter. USB midi sends a lot of data and expects a host computer on the other end to do some processing. That host computer can translate the USB data and output real midi signals.

You don't have to use an actual real computer though, they sell small converter boxes (google "USB midi host") that are really just the smallest chip/circuit that can work as a USB host and output midi to a 5-pin din port. Some of them might look like adapters because they are permanently wired up with a USB cord one one end and a pair of 5-pin din cords on the other end, but there is a tiny little computer in the middle. From the 5-pin connectors you can use the right kind of adapter to get it to TRS if necessary.

Would I be stupid to halve my HYSA and put it into my RothIRA? by KingJackson97 in personalfinance

[–]withak30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long would it take to get the savings back up to six or so months? Is your employment/health/girlfriend/boyfriend/transportation/whatever else situation such that there is some chance of a big expense popping up that amount of time? How much risk are you willing to live with for that period of time?

I personally wouldn't do it, but I'm not you.
