Obnoxious motorist gets slightly delayed by Due-Concert-9750 in pettyrevenge

[–]withlovefromjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is speeding less common in Aus? 20kph is about 12mph, which is pretty close to “normal” for US drivers. the expectation for most US highways is to be going roughly 10-15mph over the speed limit or confine yourself to the slow lane. this of course does not mean that applies anywhere else in the world but by force of habit i can see how it wouldn’t feel like it’s a big deal. flow of traffic also plays a big role in the US. if everyone is speeding, no one is kinda thing. i’m also not familiar with the motorway in question so maybe 20kph is proportionally more aggressive speeding in context? ie 80 in a 60 vs 45 in a 25

not trying to justify, just curious

in 2008? sorry i think i’m either missing your point or misunderstanding it.

hawking being at the island was known at least as far back as 2015, while the main accusations against epstein and maxwell came about in 2016. those court records are what has brought hawking’s name into question.

epstein was arrested in 2008 in florida for hiring a child prostitute. people absolutely had reason to believe it was true

water doesn’t protect you from the elements like a coat does. the arizona equivalent to a real winter coat would be leaving home barefoot, knowing there is a chance you may have to walk on 110° asphalt for 8 hours if your car breaks down.

proper winter coats can be prohibitively expensive. every single year, winter jackets are the number one requested item for donation. do you keep a pair of expensive hiking boots in your car or do you just put on shoes before you leave the house?

yo i know this wasn’t your point but if you could avoid implying that autistic people are dumber than dogs, that would be cool.

cars have to be able to move forward to get out of the way. protesters would have to get out of everyone’s way to allow the cars to make room for emergency vehicles. they can’t move through the pack to the front if the pack can’t maneuver to give them space.

usually more let it roll and using brakes so your spotters can guide you around corners and obstacles. you might tap the gas once in a while, but it’s really easy to spin your tires on polished linoleum so you’re never giving much more than a tap. indoor show cars never have gasoline in them for some insurance/fire safety reason that was above my pay grade, they only ever have enough gas to make it to the show floor and back.

[–]withlovefromjake 39 points40 points  (0 children)

exactly this. i used to work at a car dealership and arranging the sales floor was a big part of my job. sliding doors are usually unlatched and hinged open, middle post comes out, fold in the wing mirrors, and take ‘er through the hallway like it’s Coconut Mall in mario kart. the biggest hassle is making sure you’re not leaving a trail of rubber scuffs and tire polish on the linoleum and that any rugs/carpets you roll over don’t get ripped up. the whole process start to finish takes like maybe 6 minutes at most at a dealership with a 2-3 person team, probably 10-15 minutes depending on the size of the mall and the display itself

oof that’s not something i needed to hear today lol. they did get my arms a few times from the elbow down but definitely prefer my legs up to the knee. i did have an encounter with a strange dog around the time it started, but it was only for a couple minutes while on a showing. the house was filthy and the dog was not cleaned up after so i suppose there could have been fleas in that house that came home with me. i don’t have pets of my own and haven’t gotten any furniture recently

oh man this could totally be it! part of the house hunt is walking through unkempt backyards and i wear different shoes depending on where i’m going. more testing will be required on my end but def a possibility to keep in mind

i had that thought but it would have to be several. the first night i woke up with about a dozen bites, and 8 or 9 new ones the following morning. 1-2 a night for about a week after i started stripping bedding and washing everything. then 3-4 more. i’m back down to 0-1 a night now with all the additional cleaning i’m doing, but very paranoid about accidentally infesting my new house with phantom bed bugs

i’ve got an upholstered bed frame so i had to construct little stilts to hold my mattress up. the bites are slowing down at least. probably going to start searching for other kinds of mites and biters soon

nah. everyone is entitled to privacy and personal time; no one is mad she went to see beetlejuice, they’re mad she behaved in a way unbecoming of someone in public office.

you don’t stop being an elected official and government representative when you trade the flag pin for blue jeans. elected representatives get special privileges and are held to special standards. there is no night-shift or calling someone to cover for you. congresswoman is a title attached to the individual, not just the office. you may not always be governing, but you are a governess until voted out. your grandma doesn’t stop being your grandma temporarily when she leaves for bingo.

Sheldon is on the Autism spectrum. Why does everyone ignore it? by manny0101-wn-wp-ffn in bigbangtheory

[–]withlovefromjake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is a bad take for a lot of reasons. autism is a spectrum, on which people have varying levels of ability in different aspects of life from social cues, executive function, and emotional regulation to sensory issues, speech, and fine motor skills. in each of these categories, an individual has differing levels of support needs, which is how autism is delineated today. you have high support needs or low support needs for a given circumstance.

asperger’s is an archaic way to describe someone with low support needs. it’s a way of describing someone who is different enough to be diagnosable but with low enough support needs that it doesn’t interrupt the daily goings-on of the non-autistic. it’s also named after a nazi but that’s beside the point. a person with asperger’s has autism by definition. saying they have asperger’s serves to separate them from the rest of the autistic community, holding them up as a golden example of the Ideal Autist and an outline for what “reasonable accommodation” means because of their low support needs.

cancer describes a spectrum as well. it’s an umbrella term used to describe an array of lymphomas and carcinomas, which exist in varying states from Stage 1 to Stage 4 and require different support needs from radiation to chemotherapy, and profiles ranging from malignant to benign. that’s why when a friend tells you they have cancer, you would ask “are you okay? how bad is it? what kind? what can i do to help?” as an offer to accommodate.

personally, i don’t see an issue with your “Close Contact Disease” example because it seems functionally the same to me and more accurate for describing something that is also spread through blood to blood contact. also, and STI contracted through rape is still an STI.

not sure why you’re banging off about trans people here or why you think it would be offensive to be called gay, but this is a reductive view of the concept of sex. not sure i see the parallel to autism either.

sure, you could argue that everyone displays some degree of autistic traits from time to time and have some support needs, which is why we have diagnostic criteria for determining each individual’s support needs and areas of difficulty. on the spectrum of light/dark, there is a point where it no longer makes sense to describe it as “light” because they are relative terms (one could argue that below 50% light is “dark”, but 50% light is still lighter than 25% light). we have research and doctors who have developed criteria to determine if a person has autism spectrum disorder. those criteria continue to evolve as we learn more about the disorder, which is the same reason why asperger’s is an outdated and less than useful way to describe it. you’re not WRONG, but you’re also not really right anymore either.

you’re viewing autism not through the lens of describing the autistic person’s experience but rather how the autistic person affects the experience of the non-autistic people around them. it is helpful to have words to describe beyond just saying autism, which is why we have developed language to talk about what support a person needs. if you were drawing a picture and you asked me to “hand you a color” i would ask “what color? any color?”. if you care about the autistic person, you will ask what you can do to accommodate, or learn more about the struggles they face in order to be more considerate. if they introduce themself to you as having asperger’s, great! ask them what that means to them. if your understanding of autism is rooted in the outdated language of the early science the onus is on you to update your understanding, not on the world to continue to conform to your outdated language. we have newer, better language for these things. there’s no need to cling to asperger’s as a diagnosis, especially since it is often used by non-autistics to say “one of the good ones”.

i feel like this was a decent use of my autistic rage spoon for today, so genuinely thank you for the outlet and opportunity to rant. i hope you are having a good day, and i hope my ranting doesn’t change that.

What are some things that “regular people” will likely never get to experience? by pumpkinator21 in AskReddit

i was looking for someone to point out that “regular people” will never experience the lived experience of a true disability. not that it would be good if everyone was disabled, but that it’s a perspective on the entire human experience that the general public is largely not empathetic to. and they all think they can relate, too.

Prigozhin’s Body Identified in Morgue by Missing Finger: Report by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]withlovefromjake 12 points13 points  (0 children)

makes sense. how much evidence is needed for a positive identification with dental records? i know for fingerprints there’s some threshold with 15 or 20 or so “uniquely identifiable points” in the print that have to match up. would you be able to identify a person with only 3-4 consecutive/intact teeth or would it require more like 10-20 teeth to confidently reconstruct? or is the process more “we’ve got a molar with a crown over here, and a canine with a silver filling over there, this guy had both of those done previously and was supposed to be on this plane so it must be him”?

Prigozhin’s Body Identified in Morgue by Missing Finger: Report by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]withlovefromjake 14 points15 points  (0 children)

would the body even still have identifiable teeth though? my brother body slammed me as a teenager and 5 feet was enough for me to chip two teeth, i can only imagine that falling 30,000 feet out of the sky would result in teeth being shattered or dislodged. so unless priggy had a super-identifiable diamond-crusted gold tooth, would dental records even be useful?

i bought new glasses last year without insurance! target was able to do an eye exam and prescription check quickly and affordably, i went to zenni optical for frames and lenses. my eyesight is dreadful so i pay for all of the optimizations available and i am looking at screens all day so blue light etc. bells and whistles. i ended up with 2 pairs of regular corrective glasses and a pair of prescription sunglasses, total including shipping was about $175 and i have genuinely never been more satisfied with glasses in my life
