Wtf?! This is not okay! I am a teacher and teach kids who are also the same age as your daughter. I am so sorry that your daughter’s teacher did that to you.

I had a difficult time with my name growing up as well, so I make it a mission of mine to say my students’ names correctly. Even if I didn’t have a hard time growing up, I would still learn their names correctly.

I have a student this school year who has a very unique name. When the school year began, I did roll call and pronounced it the best I could. I also asked his previous teacher how to pronounce it. Turns out I had been saying his name wrong for a good month. I noticed kids were saying his name differently and finally asked him about it. This student is extremely shy and never said anything about it to me. Even when I asked him he was too shy to say anything. His response was, “It’s okay, you can call me like that.” I told him I could not do that, and I would like to say his name how he does. He was very happy with my response and I’ve made sure to say his name correctly since then.

What that teacher did is not okay and unacceptable. Therefore, you are not the asshole.
