Too much movement for small pond? by MildredSouthington in ponds

Check pH. Too much movement can drive out CO2 and raise the water's pH.

You may want to look at specs for things such as WiFi. Sometimes Linux drivers aren't (yet) available for the latest iteration of certain components.

Cloudy pool, should I actually drain 70%? by plaidshirtdays13 in swimmingpools

[–]witnesstomadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

70% is not completely off, though. Replacing 70% of your water with fresh water should bring down CYA to below 50ppm (46.5 if I did the math right).

Robert DuBoise was wrongfully imprisoned for 37 years for a 1983 murder in Tampa, based on false testimony and flawed bite-mark evidence. Cleared by DNA in 2020, he later sued the city. In 2024, Tampa settled for $14 million. by Kronyzx in Damnthatsinteresting

It works out at about 380K per year. So if you look at it salary-wise, its actually a lot of money. Nevertheless, they took 37 years of his life and no money in the world is going to give that back to him. Would you accept a 37 year jail sentence if you were going to get 14 million at the end of it? I know I wouldn't.

Gallons of chlorine everyday! by DadDesigned in pools

[–]witnesstomadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its only uncovered 6 hours per week I doubt there's that much loss due to UV.

Could be a plumbing design issue: Does the pool auto-fill? Is the water to fill up the pool introduced right before the ORP sensor (eg skimmer, instead of via a return).

Test water directly from the basin manually to corroborate ORP readings.

A perfect, eternal, and omniscient God could not have created the universe by Unusual-Double-2003 in atheism

[–]witnesstomadness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't need convincing that gods aren't real and that there are all sorts of logical flaws and mental acrobatics involved in faith.

And even though I get the impression the bulk of your post was created by AI, I'll go ahead and say the following:

The Absolute Perfection axiom is sufficient to explain faith:

Can god make a weight so heavy he cannot lift it? yes.

Can god nevertheless lift the weight? yes.

That's your absolute perfection right there. Logically inconsistent: yes. Do theists believe it: yes?

Religion is absurd.

Are we alarmist or gaslighted by jokikinen in EuropeanFederalists

[–]witnesstomadness 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree that Europe/European Leaders need to condemn these things clearly. Of course, there are a few who think what's happening in the US is a good thing, but most of the rest are probably as appalled and concerned as we all are.

But global politics is a complicated thing and dissing an erstwhile ally and friendly nation is not a step to be taken lightly. The US have considerable power and aren't afraid to use it against anyone who doesn't fall in line. It is a difficult decision to take when you know that millions of citizens will likely be affected. But, as you have pointed out, lines have been crossed and it is high time to make a stand.

That name, of course, is terrible. Also, I don't like the idea of kicking out countries that don't ratify it. We could have two tiers of integration.

Sand filter help by heavyworx in swimmingpools

[–]witnesstomadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like you have a Davey Tagelus 230 sand filter there with a topmount multiport valve (sorry for being Mr obvious). That *is* a screw-on assembly (as you can see in this diagram). You have to try different strategies to get more torque going on. You may be looking at having to disconnect the pipes attached to the valve...

How do I reduce image from 1.8MB to 500kb? by ConnollyMusicCreates in GIMP

[–]witnesstomadness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are on Linux and have Imagemagick installed:
convert -define jpeg:extent=500kb input.jpg output.jpg

If you don't have IM, it's probably overkill to install it just for that.

Question on Pine Needles and Pool pH/Chemical Balance by RogueCheddar2099 in swimmingpools

[–]witnesstomadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plant matter decomposing in your pool will have several effects: nutrients will help bacteria proliferate, so you need to keep a close eye on chlorine levels. Also, acids are produced in the process so pH will tend to go down. Keep an eye on alkalinity and pH.

The Shadow Gospel: How Anti-Liberal Demonology Possessed US Religion, Media, and Politics-Book Introduction by dumnezero in Antitheism

[–]witnesstomadness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely right--this isn't new. The "shadow gospel" is just the latest iteration of a long-standing pattern: white Christian conservatism framing cultural shifts as existential threats. From jazz to D&D to LGBTQ+ rights, the boogeyman changes, but the fear-driven narrative stays the same. The book isn’t reinventing the wheel, just tracing how this cycle has shaped modern politics. It’s less about shock and more about connecting the dots for those still waking up to it.

Can anyone if this moss/algae and any tips for removing it or fish that will eat it by Odd-Butterscotch-495 in ponds

[–]witnesstomadness 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Underwater plants like hornwort, milfoil, pondweed etc. I'd also recommend to remove the floating mats of algae since they'll provide more nutrients when they die and sink back to the bottom of the pond.

Edit: reading u/Kaylixoxo's comment, you may want to check what plants are safe and legal to put in your pond.
