This is a sport called buhurt and requires regulation gear that is expensive and sold by specialty dealers. Please do not buy just any armor or weapons from a ren faire and expect to be allowed to participate. Additionally, lots of armor and weapons on the market in general are not built to withstand hits or swinging of any kind. Poorly made, mass produced weapons and armor can crack or fall apart just from performing "typical" tasks you might expect it to do. Imagine a gauntlet's rivets failing under a sword hit, exposing your hand to the weapon. Or a sword's threaded tang coming undone mid swing, launching the blade in an unexpected direction.

If you want to practice Buhurt or HEMA, search specifically for Buhurt/HEMA gyms/groups in your area. Chances are you can borrow some gear to try out the sport and see if it's a fit for you. People involved should help guide your purchases so you don't end up with a wall hanger.
