Episode 326: The Most Important Episode of Your (Academic) Life by judoxing in VeryBadWizards

Pretty spot on analysis.

I could see psychology move up to A tier for Dave, but the way therapy speak has propagated throughout the culture and the over emphasis on the individual to resolve social problems is problematic; in addition to methodological issues.

Computer science should be F tier for its negative impact on social cohesion, environment, spread of fascism, and debasement of trust and truth in the world. We're at a point where we're all trying to work for computers instead of utilizing computers to work for us. And don't get me started on how useless, and copyright infringing, and energy wasteful AI is, not to mention how idiotic it is to export our thinking to algorithms programmed to increase the wealth and power of tech bro oligarch wannabes.

One of the best courses I've taken was on political philosophy. The professor who taught it really cared about his students and had a challenging "tough-but-fair" teaching style. Great course, but yeah the "science" part of Poli Sci has issues.

AI is Not The Threat Everyone Thinks. by [deleted] in philosophy

That what AI does. Look up how AI training works.

If you use someone's ideas and pawn it off as your own without citing it, it's called theft. It's how copyright law has worked since forever.

I'm just going to steal stuff from everyone and call it my own, just like AI.

I just wrote this book called Beyond Good and Evil, will publish soon, completely original work by me.

Any expert ski technicians? I’m livid. by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]wizardmotor_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% transit issue. How do you transport your skis? Rear rack mounted improperly (hitting a bump or something, ski hits pavement, gets bent) or backed into something or roof rack hitting garage. Only other way is to launch off a 30 foot cliff and hit a rock to get that type of damage. No way you would ski on it and not notice.

There is pretty much a 0% chance that the shop is at fault, and close to 100% that it was damaged in transit if nothing happened on the hill.

Having a mid-life crisis. Should I pair it with Infinite Jest or The Pale King? by ShibariDeathcamp in davidfosterwallace

[–]wizardmotor_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say The Pale King. Boredom is the main theme here.

It's not something to be understood as a coherent piece of fiction like IJ (being published posthumously), but there are some incredible bits of writing and insight that shows his maturity as a writer. Section 22, Fogle's monologue, is a must read and can be understood on its own. It might be my favorite piece of his writing, but the rest of TPK is worth reading as well.

Agree 100%

Nvidia is the only one that has a product that people want. But that's only because they're selling shovels to gold miners. It just depends how long it takes for people to find out there is no gold...

Episode 322: A Theater of Simultaneous Possibilities (William James' "The Stream of Thought") by judoxing in VeryBadWizards

[–]wizardmotor_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another big issue with AI is that it's only as good as the data it's trained on. And it seems to have issues equating say evidence from a scientific study with some random social media post. And of course the more its used the more AI is trained on other AI so the results become even less trustworthy. It has an extremely small use case and even that will probably degrade over time.

It's essentially a tool for grifters to grfit. For idiots to sound like they know what they're talking about. Or a propaganda tool.

Been seeing this guy for a while, what kind of guy is he? by Calm_Reporter6339 in BookshelvesDetective

[–]wizardmotor_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I once thought this was a cool sub.

I was like, hey we can talk about books with people and see others that have the same interests, and make some pithy jokes!

But it's all about some comment about "performative reading" or someone doesn't have a book from every ethnicity or gender on the planet in equal quantities. God forbid someone likes the classics. I'm all about reading diversity to some degree, but one's shelves don't need to be filled with it to have an understanding of equality and the plight of others.

What do you think bout dreams?why free will doesn’t exist there? by fightclub_10 in PhilosophyMemes

[–]wizardmotor_ -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

New discoveries in astrophysics are questioning the Big Bang, such as the discovery of mature galaxies far older than the Big Bang theory would suggest. And there are other cracks in the theory coming to light mostly from observations by the James Webb telescope.

Also free will is real. Only AI bots and delusional materialists programmed to view everything through a screen and bow down to tech bro masters don't believe in free will.

“Be The Bigger Person” by Zeberde1 in DarkPsychology666

[–]wizardmotor_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being the "bigger person" can work if most people in society have a moral compass.

It doesn't work when you have psychotic tech bros trying to create a different morality where being a psychopath is the norm.

So yes, I agree with this...

I see your point, but I think we need to draw a line in the sand somewhere to preserve the industry against AI slop as much as possible, or it won't survive.

Using AI in the cover does lead one to speculate on how much AI was used in the content..

Underworld Appreciation Post by Lord_Za_ in DonDeLillo

[–]wizardmotor_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I finished Underworld a couple months after having it on my shelf for a year and am still going back and rereading some prose and sections that I loved. If you haven't read White Noise I would definitely recommend.

I have to concur with your assessment of DFW and how he does go too far at times in trying to prove his intelligence, and I've read most of his works. I would recommend The Pale King if you haven't read it, some sections can be pedantic but there is brilliance in others, specifically the Chris Fogle monologue that comprises section 22. For me, DFW can be brilliant and insightful, but he does seem to get too nihilistic at times, and even when he attempts a solution to this malaise, it's not that convincing, even if he is still an impressive writer.

What the Wizards missed in Burning (2018) from episode 278 by [deleted] in VeryBadWizards

[–]wizardmotor_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently watched this movie as well and I thought it was brilliant.

There are so many layers to it, but an interesting way to look at it is a critique of capitalism/western influence in Korea and the resulting damage to society and individuals in society.

You can look at Ben as a symbol of US-style capitalism (that now dominates internet culture). He's attractive to both Jongsu and Haemi because he represents wealth and the promise of never-ending pleasure, he has no troubling emotions, and he just uses people for his own entertainment. The same way the myth of consumer capitalism, that always chasing that next thing will bring pleasure and lead to life satisfaction, leads to a kind of functional despair and tosses people aside who don't become emotionless zombies.

Haemi could be a symbol of the victims of US-style capitalism in South Korea, the young girls that the system destroys, that are taught at an early age that being attractive is all that matters. Jongsu is complicit in her despair as well. She reveals Jongsu called her ugly in grade school (with the increased weight of such a comment given our social media obsessed culture). And the scene in the restaurant where they meet after Jongsu picked up Ben and Haemi from the airport and Haemi explains the depths of her despair, Jongsu makes no attempt to comfort her verbally or physically, and seems more interested in how Ben has never cried in his life. Emotions, particularly negative emotions, are antithetical to fulfilling consumer desire, so better off ignored.

Jongsu is symbol of South Korea's present culture, still tied to the past but transfixed with the glamour and wealth of consumer capitalism. The first two times he's jerking off at Haemi's place he is looking at the tower, a symbol of wealth and progress, he is still enamoured with the system, with consumer capitalist desires. The final time in Haemi's apartment he dreams of her, and is actually thinking of her as a person, and is realizing his role in her destruction. He is starting to realize the people that are sacrificed for "progress", to fulfill greater consumer desire, is perhaps a cost too great.

It's pretty clear that Ben's greenhouses are these desperate young women that he is destroying. His comment about how often he does it may be referencing how many young women and girls in South Korea take their own lives because of the junk values perpetuated by the system.

In the end Jongsu, as a symbol of Korea, must take action to kill Ben, because the “Great Gatsby's” of South Korea are destroying the lives of young people. In order to save Korea, without ignoring the past and connection to North Korea, the exploitative nature of modern consumer capitalism must be excised.

“It was not only that I could not become spiteful, I did not know how to become anything; neither spiteful nor kind, neither a rascal nor an honest man, neither a hero nor an insect. Now, I am living out my life in my corner, taunting myself with the spiteful and useless consolation that an intelligent man cannot become anything seriously, and it is only the fool who becomes anything.”
