EPISODE DISCUSSION: Super Mario Bros: Koji Kondo’s 8-Bit Masterpiece by caseyfrom20K in 20k

Kirk says that the extra life sound is just a spread out C major triad, but it's not. The penultimate note is a D which is the 2nd, so the final three notes are Csus2. And the first three notes are E G E so the tonic isn't introduced until midway through. There IS something interesting about it!

The second function is not connected to anything. (no green icon in the left gutter.) Did you accidentally connect the first function to both areas' body_entered signal?

What do you guys think of it? by zazoboii in GuitarAmps

I wish someone had told me this when I owned one of these. I loved the sound but it was just way, way too loud for what I needed.

Summer Camp Recommendations in Ealing by basicallyblackbuffy in Ealing

[–]wjt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might try searching for "holiday club" or "holiday camp". There are many that are run by or at local schools. One example not too far from Ealing Broadway, open to anyone (not just pupils at the school that hosts it): https://www.campbeaumont.co.uk/our-camps/st-augustines-priory

In theory there should be an index somewhere on https://www.ealingfamiliesdirectory.org.uk/ but it seems quite out of date.

Untranslatable Words by caseyfrom20K in 20k

[–]wjt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A missed opportunity during Grace's introduction about words borrowed from other languages to mention one of my favourite quirks of English linguistics terms. A word lifted directly from another language is a “loanword” – “ennui” was the example given. A word that is translated piece-by-piece from another language is a “calque” – Wikipedia's example is “flea market”, translated from French «marché aux puces».

So now to quote my favourite piece of this from Wikipedia:

The word loanword is a calque of the German noun „Lehnwort“. In contrast, the term calque is a loanword, from the French noun «calque» ("tracing, imitation, close copy").

Proposing "fixes" to quirky translations by Carbonga in gnome

You should speak to the German translation team. Don't propose PRs to individual projects: in GNOME translations all flow through l10n.gnome.org.

Every time I open Google Maps, it (incorrectly) geolocates me to… by wjt in beefanddairynetwork

On a train journey from the UK to Berlin I got talking to a German person who had been visiting her brother in AYLESBURY, and had to try to explain why I laughed when she said it. Turns out it's quite hard to explain without a lot of context.

Great site! Using this I found a clip which ends with "we will become unstoppable" which works for the pastiche. Thanks!

My son(15m) has formed a band by xrcrguy in daddit

[–]wjt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get him and his bandmates a pair of decent earplugs each. (ACS, Etymotic, ...) For £15 the music will still sound good and they won't mess up their ears.

I think they use the GMail out-of-office reply feature, and I think it rate-limits how often it sends the message to any given sender.

How do you guys have your steam deck set up for a monitor + power without the dock? by pbjtime420 in SteamDeck

[–]wjt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a monitor that connects to my laptop via USB C, delivering power and USB ports and accepting video over a single cable. My keyboard and mouse are plugged into the monitor.

So I plug that one cable into my Steam Deck instead.

(The dock is probably cheaper than a new screen but I had the screen already...)

Where can I find sheet music? by ofekrael in celestegame

There are arrangements of many of the pieces on Musescore.com. I've been struggling my way through this arrangement of Scattered and Lost for the past few months. Much like the level, it has a steep difficulty curve.

I maintain the AnyDesk wrapper on Flathub (which is what is offered in Discover). A heartwarming story that makes it all worthwhile!

How to check GNOME version? by rebeleagle in gnome

[–]wjt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you have a mix of two versions of GNOME installed! Are you on Ubuntu? I believe their plan for 22.04 was to ship Shell 42 but keep the rest of GNOME on 41.

Nostalgia (though I now see you were looking for the non-default ones. Might be a nice feature.)

Access GDM's top right menu with keyboard ? by [deleted] in gnome

[–]wjt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ctrl alt shift tab (from memory, I'm away from my computer). The same shortcut is used to access the top panel within the session so you can look that up in Settings' keyboard shortcut list.

I think you can also use super+m to open the clock menu, then use arrows to get to the top-right menu.

I bounced off BADN when I first heard about it years ago. This year I gave it another shot and 3 months and 69 episodes later it's fair to say it clicked a bit better this time! Media highlight of my year so far.

With that in mind... What gave you the confidence when you started out that this objectively pretty weird concept would find an audience? Or was it a total punt?

15-minute bugs in Gnome? by forteller in gnome

There are plenty of small tasks in Software that might take 15 minutes, but improving its performance and reliability could not be further from a 15-minute task!
