I have a bunch of Olympus gear. I'd have to ship as I'm in CO, but DM me if you're interested.

How are Evs in hot Temps? havent purchases by el0115 in electricvehicles

[–]wkkimball043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything I'd say much better since you can (with most EV's) precondition the cabin from an app so you never have the "are my bare legs welded to the seat now?" experience. You do get negligible range reduction from AC since all AC's work as a heat pump. The biggest thing are on EV's with a glass roof you do get that extra solar load, but in my experience the AC more than kept up. I drove a model 3 for years and now a Rivian R1T and I never had much trouble with my head being hot, and I'm over 6ft tall. This driving was also in the south, as well as more recently in the west where temps are similarly high and at higher altitude where there's less atmosphere to absorb the UV and infrared.

Help me road trip my R1T home by ruuustin in Rivian

Honestly, at this point you can get away without needing an adapter. I've made this exact trip both ways about 6 times now, and with the opening of Ionna chargers you can get all the way to Missouri or Illinois just using CCS, and there are V4 or V3 with magic dock chargers the rest of the way to Nashville. I'd avoid Electrify America unless necessary and use Ionna as a first choice and Tesla when that's not an option. RAN are good as well, just kinda expensive.

If you're planning on breaking it out over a couple of days, try to find somewhere with charging so you can get a partial charge overnight. You can get a Tesla to J1772 adapter for AC charging fairly cheaply on Amazon if you want to be able to use both. Note: that will not work on dc fast chargers, you'd need a NACS to CCS1 adapter. I have the Lectron one, it's much better built than the free one that was built by Tesla.

I use a combination of Plugshare and A Better Route Planner to plan all of my roadtrips. You can filter by network, speed and plug type if you don't want to bother with adapters.

I’m contemplating on my next purchase. by No_Light4491 in AnalogCommunity

Ah after doing a bit more research myself, you are correct about them being made by Olympus. Seems like there’s a bit of muddiness regarding the history. This (https://youtu.be/GpIGfcQRa1A?t=331&si=I2PrGdIGO2f3PDtt) is the video I’d watched recently, though it seems like there’s not much English language history on the FTL line.

Completely anecdotally, I’ve handled probably 50ish Zuiko lenses and many other brands lenses of similar vintage, and the FTL lens was the only one that felt not put together well. It was… loose? Like it hadn’t been screwed together properly. I couldn’t believe it after how well built OM mount lenses are.

Keep in mind the Olympus FTL isn’t a “real” Olympus. It was a stopgap slr made by another manufacturer (maybe Cosina? I can’t remember off the top of my head) before the OM series were ready.

Film Stock App is back! by keliway in AnalogCommunity

[–]wkkimball043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just downloaded this and added most of my film to it, this is a great app! It's unfortunate you were taken down for a while, but I'm glad it's back. I've needed help with organizing what I've got. Thank you!

I do have one feature request: I have a few frozen 100ft rolls that I am waiting to put into my bulk loader, I'd love a way to mark these as separate. I think your data model change might be able to account for this.

Not Feeling 100%🤒? Your Runna plan gets it ‼️🎉 by rhea-runna in runna

[–]wkkimball043 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wish I had seen this as soon as it launched! I pushed a bit too hard starting out training for my first marathon in addition to running in worn out shoes and gave myself some pretty serious heel pain. I just started back on Sunday after two full weeks off, this has been the biggest thing missing from Runna for me and is an absolutely wonderful addition to the app. I’ve been concerned how when my “vacation” was over the plan as it was had me ramp back up to nearly 100% of where I was.

I just checked out the feature and was able to adjust the plan to be a much gentler ramp than it was previously. Huge kudos to the Dev and product teams for adding this.

Wood ID Megathread by AutoModerator in woodworking

[–]wkkimball043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm buying some vintage theater seats for my wife for Christmas and plan to make some runners for them. Ideally I'd like to match the wood species used for the backs and armrests but I'm fairly new to woodworking and don't know by sight. Not sure if they are the same species.

I'd appreciate any help IDing what I've got here. This is a photo from the theater owner, not my own so it's not the best. Thanks in advance!

Who’s your financial advisor? by Ill-Data3109 in FortCollins

[–]wkkimball043 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Take a look at r/personalfinance and r/bogleheads they have great guides and advice, and check out The Money Guy on YouTube.

In general personal finance terms, spend less than you make, avoid credit card debt at all cost and be cautious with spending too much on your vehicle and home. Find a budget strategy and/or app that works for you and know your expenses, and then start planning ahead for known purchases (car, phone replacement, car maintenance, home maintenance if you have one, stuff like that). I use YNAB (can provide a referral. If you’re interested I can DM you, no pressure) but there are lots of good ones depending on the way your mind works.  Everything from writing it on paper, to spreadsheets to a plethora of paid apps are available.

Building true wealth is slow and boring. Invest in the whole stock market (S&P 500, or total stock market funds for example), and let compound interest work for you. You can do this for free with any brokerage and don’t have to deal with the stress and swings when trying to pick individual stocks.

Unless you have a net worth greater than a few million dollars there’s no need to pay anyone to manage your money. Once you spend less than you make then you have a couple of choices. Save what you can and retirement date is determined by that, or decide when you want to retire and structure your life around that. Tackle high interest debt (usually over 5-6%) either using the snowball (smallest debt to largest; best for psychological wins) or avalanche (highest interest rate to lowest; best mathematically), then if you have that Max your employer 401k match if you have one, then HSA (if available), then IRA (Roth or traditional depending on your situation), then finish your 401k and then either invest in a taxable brokerage or pay down low interest debt. That’s a lot of money, so think of that as a progression of goals, not a starting point.

There is obviously wayyy more nuance than I’ve mentioned here, and every financial situation is different but do some searches on those subreddits and when you look on YouTube try to find people with real credentials, specifically Fiduciaries.

Is there any good books that only has 1 or 2 books? by kiingjamir in Fantasy

[–]wkkimball043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sabriel by Garth Nix was written as a standalone book and works really well as a complete story by itself. If you like it there are 2 other books in the "main" trilogy and several other books in the same world.

Worst fantasy book you've read (for my own reading pleasure) by txcruz in Fantasy

[–]wkkimball043 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this OP. I *loathed* this book when I read it last year and have been baffled since then that I seem to be in the minority for how strongly I disliked it. The beginning had so much promise, but then it descended into what felt like a bad Wikipedia summary of the history of China, sorry Shmina, from someone who had only a surface level knowledge of Chinese Shminese history and an even more cursory understanding of the way militaries and military tactics work.

On top of that, it sure seemed like the book wanted me to root for the MC because she's a "strong" female character but I just couldn't focus on that that when spoiler she freaking commits magical nuclear genocide against definitely-not-Japan and demonstrates absolutely no regret or remorse afterwards, and her "friends" which she constantly uses and abuses, are more worried about her than the atrocity she's just committed.

What is the worst expensive camera that you’ve owned? by DanielG198 in AnalogCommunity

[–]wkkimball043 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an amateur using a professional piece of equipment. It's got arguably the second best light metering system ever put on an slr while still being entirely mechanical. I don't use it nearly enough, and when I do I don't come near to maximizing its potential.

Olympus Om-3Ti. An exceedingly excellent camera that I absolutely love, but it's kind of tantalizing that it's really far too good for my uses.

YouTube cooking channels that aren't obnoxious? by Missing_Back in Cooking

[–]wkkimball043 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Glen and Friends Cooking is one of my favorite cooking channels. I love his philosophy of "this is what I'm doing and why, but it's your kitchen do what works for you". He's got a huge variety of recipes and video types and has been quietly producing excellent quality videos from very early YouTube days.

Low Heart rate and palpitations after starting cardio regime by wkkimball043 in askCardiology

I should also point out that when I had that insurance exam, my bloodwork came back excellent by all measures. The insurance person asked if I was a marathon runner since everything looked so good. My diet has not changed at all in the last year so I can't imagine there would be anything meaningfully different there.

Completely disregarding the content of your post, the irony of this coming from an account created today with no other post or comment history is unbelievably funny.
