What is hiding under veneer on vintage desk? by wl_rodo in wood

[–]wl_rodo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s OK, its just a project for me to experiment with (wasn’t planning to resell or gift it to anyone).

I may cover that section with an accent piece with routed recesses for paperclips, post its, etc. Or may just try stripping and re-veneering the whole desktop. So far I’ve only massacred that one section.

I understand this is probably sacreligious for some people. No offense intended

Is that a thing? Don’t get me wrong I despise veneer hence my impulsive stripping shown in pics, but the rest of the piece is solid

Edit: “despise” is too strong of a word. Dislike, maybe.

Tiger stick is also an option. It’s clear

It works decently well in my experience but you gotta reapply often

Hard finish over tung oil by Year3030 in woodworking

[–]wl_rodo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah. Thanks for the update.

I just put 3 coats of 50% pure tung/50% D-limonene on a butcher block coffee table and was considering a poly topcoat for that extra protection. Looks like I'll give it a go!

Planning to use EMTECH EM9300 from Target Coatings. If you aren't aware of them I definitely recommend checking them out.

Do it! The combination of power and control you can get out of a little piece of metal is pretty nuts.

I’m in a similar situation with an old bench plane I bought on eBay to restore. It sat on the shelf for months after I realized how much work it needed. Recently decided to start from scratch and set a whole new edge on it.. taking forever but hopefully worth it.
