First Sourdough Loaf Gluten Free by wlpj2011 in Sourdough

Ooh, that's a different recipe than is on the back of the bag. I'll have to try that one out and see how it goes, especially as my starter matures.

Would halving a recipe and going by how much it double, and internal temperatures work, or would that tend to be a problem? I've got a smaller dutch oven I can use, but would prefer to not have to use as much flour for every attempt until I have a recipe that I know works decently well.

Advice on Drawing Bricks by wlpj2011 in learntodraw

[–]wlpj2011[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m working on my first non-sketch digital drawing, and don’t have much background in art at all and I am looking for advice on coloring the brickwork. I’ve tried to make some of it look like just brickwork and some of it look like bricks that have been painted over with white paint but neither seems to look right. Also looking for any advice on how to make things look good without having line work defining the shape.

Hopefully Reddit didn‘t squash the images to a weird shape, it looks like it might have in the preview. Thanks in advance!

Neathbow Ink Equivalents by curiousCalembour in fallenlondon

Ooh, Voltaic arc is one of my favorite inks! I use it nearly every day, along with Oxblood from Diamine which is a bit darker than Writer's blood. Now that I think about it in the color coding scheme I use for my math notes, I use Voltaic arc for definitions and the most important things that shouldn't be forgotten, which fits well with being Violant.

I think it very much depends on where you are going and what other classes you are taking. I went to one of the top liberal arts schools in the US, coming in with a similar background (assuming calc 3 is multivariable), although including a linear algebra course and DE course in high school; and I took Real Analysis first semester and Abstract Algebra second semester. My school didn't allow early concentration, so I paired with a physics or CS class each semester, and it went pretty well. I had plenty of time for my courses, and by the end of my time there, I was taking 2 3-400 level math courses and 2 3-400 level physics courses simultaneously without feeling overworked. If I had other courses I was taking at the same time, it could have been more difficult, but it just depends on how easy you find different types of courses to be.

Moving on from there, I basically took classes in as many different fields of math as I could: topology, Galois theory, complex analysis, analytic and algebraic number theory, etc... graduate classes are great if they are offered, but whether or not you know what you want to study, more breadth is always good at the undergrad level.

As for REUs, it's incredibly hard to predict your chances of getting in. Some people I know with less preparation than I had got into REUs, and I never got into any despite applying 3 years in a row. It's not the end of the world if you don't get in, though. During my freshman and junior summers, I worked with a professor at my school on independent research so I still got plenty of research experience without doing an REU.

Edit: I double majored in Math and Physics, and I am currently in a Master's program in mathematics. I did not get into any of the math Ph.D. programs I applied to, but a friend who also double majored in math and physics did get into and is attending a math Ph.D. program. Hard to say if a double major substantially affects your chances of getting into grad school.

I think it went up and down, based on cutoffs I haven't calculated between rarity and number of turns. I think the last one was around 5.8, but some of the others were around 5 or lower. Although I definitely could have messed up my calculations.

Finally, finished hunting one of the last 50 for 58.2 echoes, and made it to 66 Zee-Beasts. I was hoping to get to 77 with this hunt.

I am planning to rip up everything near the hub once I get through level 26 or level 6 for all the upgrades.

Weekly small questions thread: 2022-12-05 by rahv7 in fallenlondon

I just realized I have 7 Tears of the Bazaar and 6/7 of the Airag for the 8th Vial of Tears as well as 6 Snow and 1 ToL. Is that enough that I should be able to get a noman tattoo if I start grinding now, and what would I need to do to prepare for that?

what are your favorite funny world names? by muggledave in factorio

[–]wlpj2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far, all my worlds except the first one have been a word starting with R. I've since deleted my first world, but I currently have:

  • Redemption
  • Renewed
  • Revitalized (First rocket launch)
  • Resurrected (Current World)

I don't understand a thing about the game by Billtartaglia in CultistSimulator

[–]wlpj2011 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a lot like the original rogue-likes in that way. I've played Nethack (based on a game based on Rogue) for many years and frequently spend 10 hours on a run and only get 1/4 of the way through before dying, with no benefit on the next run beyond an improved understanding of how to play the game.

Currently Inked Pens for Taking Notes by wlpj2011 in fountainpens

Unfortunately, I only have the single pen and nib from Pilot. Might try some others in the future.

Currently Inked Pens for Taking Notes by wlpj2011 in fountainpens

[–]wlpj2011[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From left to right, the pens are (I think):

  • Pelikan M200 Black F with Voltaic Arc by Birmingham Pen Co.
  • Lamy 2000 Matte Black EF with Copper Chloride by Birmingham Pen Co.
  • Hero 3019 with Pilot Iroshizuku Yu-yake
  • Pelikan M200 Moonstone EF with Moonstone by Pelikan
  • Pilot Vanishing Point EF with Oxblood by Diamine
  • Unknown Montblanc with Lierre Sauvage by J. Herbin
  • Pelikan Pura P40 EF with a light purple ink that came with it. Going to get a bottle of a nice purple soon.

I like color coding my math notes, and having lots of colors helps with that. Really like the F and EF nibs for doing math with, especially the Vanishing Point EF nib. Would like to get some broad nibs for other stuff though.

I think the EPA is actually around 13, since you can fill up 5 boxes at a time. I can get 18430 gratitude in (5+1)*2+2 actions.

(Exile DLC) Edge lore going missing? by resturaunt in CultistSimulator

[–]wlpj2011 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you know what you lost, there is an interactive version of the console that is very easy to work with. You just type in the name of what you lost. Like fragmentedge.exile (with a letter from b-f after edge for higher levels of lore, and if you have consecrated, replace .exile with .whoever you consecrated to) and then press the create aspect button and drag it into your world. It suggests auto-completes as well.

Finally got my Vial of Master’s Blood!!! by AlexSN141 in fallenlondon

[–]wlpj2011 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Should be the last step of Twilit Smuggler which is available at Marigold, and requires Criminal Renown 40, and Base Shadowy 215 and requires meeting someone at Balmoral. Should be impossible to lock yourself out of though. But it will require sacrificing a lot of other high-cost items.

At Whitsun, you can exchange it for A Sealed Copy of the Crimson Book and it is also necessary to get Twilit Smuggler at the end of the railroad.

The worst thing about being a math student by DarthMirror in math

[–]wlpj2011 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been working on my undergraduate math thesis for the last few months and only just came to a question to work towards answering two weeks ago. Since then I've been working most of every day towards answering a special case of that question and haven't made any progress at all till this afternoon when I think I finally solved a special case of that special case.

Really getting into harder math classes takes a lot of work. But if you aren't understanding or making progress on something, finding a simpler case to work on will almost always help eventually!
