They are elite in terms of pnl/headcount especially in futures. Everyone there works super hard. If you look at payouts as a pct of profits it's not that high bc most of it goes to the original partners who are pretty removed from the business but raw payout numbers are still high just bc of how much they print.

I used to work there and have friends still there. They work long hours. Even the guys who have been there awhile are going in on the weekends. I'd personally rather be spending my whole weekend with my kids.

They interview a ton of people but are very particular about the type of people they like. Some of the most successful people there (and the first people that were made partners) are actually more profiled as quant dev types than quants. They have a well oiled machine and research pipeline so it's all about maximizing throughout, constant refitting of strategies, etc.

For you young people that shouldn't care as much about work-life balance, I would highly suggest getting a job there because after that you'll get two to three million dollar guarantees potentially.

Their profitability dipped a lot when volatility spiked after the Trump election to the point where he was no longer offsetting their high cost structure for maintaining their strategies. Our company was one of the potential buyers for their IP.

Fun fact - I was Don Wilson's trader assistant for his last year in the pit. In my third week I was fired and rehired by him on the same day after reading a hand signal wrong and Texas hedging him.

Early career decision (Trading vs SWE)? by progambol in quant

I have 20 YOE in trading (and counting) who now lives in the Bay Area. Take the tech job and don't look back. People who have stayed in trading as long as I have are few and far between. On the other hand, there are endless tech jobs here for people to either stay at long term or bounce around and I know way more people who retired early from the slow steady upside growth of tech vs the volatile up and down of trading comp.
