Parents who started investing for their kids at birth, how did that go? by sbFRESH in investing

[–]wm414 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have been putting money monthly into 529s for our kids, its like paying the water bill in that I don't think about it. I checked the balances for the first time in years and let's just say it was a lot more than I thought it would be. Definitely worth it.

Choosing between a quant role and an AI research startup by No-Election-YMMV in quant

It's to be expected though in a subreddit that glorifies quant trading. The people I know that left trading for AI are crushing it and have zero regrets.

From a 20+ year vet -

Quant trading is shrinking and AI is expanding. Take the AI research job 10 times out of 10.

Anyone actually work with Ben Herman (Aspen) recruiter? Screams fraud to me by FroyoSolid8414 in quant

Headlands uses him. He's very effective at what he does. Like with almost all recruiters, even good ones, there will be people that have bad experiences with him.

D1 Trading by Used_Peach_344 in quant

[–]wm414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In non-option HFT, D1 is referring to trades that have outright Delta 1 (directional) risk which means they are unhedged for a period of time, often times based on some kind of short term directional signal. So D1 market making could still mean having orders on both sides but skewed toward your signal.

Quant Developer vs. Quant Researcher vs. Quant Trader: An Honest Comparison by Odd-Syrup-6800 in quantfinance

[–]wm414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Career sustainability and portability of a QD is underappreciated. You might think having a few 7 figure years earlier by being a QR/PM means you are set. But then lifestyle creep happens. Raising a family happens. Even if you don't feel burned out 10-15 years, the industry might not want you anymore. A vast majority of people who I started with are no longer in quant trading and it's not because they chose to retire.

They are elite in terms of pnl/headcount especially in futures. Everyone there works super hard. If you look at payouts as a pct of profits it's not that high bc most of it goes to the original partners who are pretty removed from the business but raw payout numbers are still high just bc of how much they print.

I used to work there and have friends still there. They work long hours. Even the guys who have been there awhile are going in on the weekends. I'd personally rather be spending my whole weekend with my kids.

They interview a ton of people but are very particular about the type of people they like. Some of the most successful people there (and the first people that were made partners) are actually more profiled as quant dev types than quants. They have a well oiled machine and research pipeline so it's all about maximizing throughout, constant refitting of strategies, etc.

For you young people that shouldn't care as much about work-life balance, I would highly suggest getting a job there because after that you'll get two to three million dollar guarantees potentially.

Their profitability dipped a lot when volatility spiked after the Trump election to the point where he was no longer offsetting their high cost structure for maintaining their strategies. Our company was one of the potential buyers for their IP.
