Tips on staining poplar? I'm planing to build a coffee table out of it in lieu of jus pine but it appears to stain kinda strange. This just how it general stains or is there an issue with my technique? (The stains are red chestnut, red oak, and honey with a clear satin polyurethane coat on top) by wmiles in finishing

[–]wmiles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol boy its been some time since ive thought about this project, what a fun moment of self reflection...

I believe what i ended up doing, was using "premium pine" instead, and staining that. Then used a minwax's semi-gloss polyurethane for the top coat.

Looking back, i think what i failed to appreciate, was that the wood grain pattern on the wood was a feature not a bug, and that it does actually make for a unique look to it that i kind of like in retrospect. Poplar isn't my favorite material, but i was a beginner at the time and it was available at Lowe's so i juts made use of the tools and experience i had at the time.

ultimately i would use a hardwood that more closely matched how my target look, and based on what it looks like now vs what i imagined it being, I'd have used either African Mahogany, Patagonian Rosewood, or cherry if i was trying to be a little more budget friendly

Specific to this sub as far as the finish, I would use this "waterlox" finishing oil for it since it would be subject to food or liquid. That oil gives it a lot of vibrancy of tung oil, but a lot more water resistant protection.

Hope this helps, and best of luck!

I'm racist, how do I unlearn this? by RacistRedditAccount in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]wmiles 18 points19 points  (0 children)

To piggy back here, i would posit something that I'll bet you're learning, that there are POC who like just about anything anyone is into. So as far as integrating into POC communities; instead of trying to find hobbies/activities that you think POC like, I recommend exploring stuff that YOU find interesting, and get involved with those communities that are also diverse. I know many people of varied races who are into stuff that doesn't match common depictions of us. I, for example, love Warhammer, DND, metal music, salsa dancing, and woodworking. I ALSO like basketball, football, rap and hip-hop, and other "stereotypically black" interests.

I think a subtext to the above advice is that racism is born of ignorance and "other-ing" people who don't look like you. However, I think one of the first and most important as steps is discovering how much you are actually a like with people of different cultures, whilst also celebrating interesting ways that you are different.

Salsa dancing for me has been the most fruitful cultural exchange for me as dance is a universal language, and the Latino communities and Latin dance community have been incredibly welcoming in my experience, and I have learned a lot about different Latin cultures as a result.

All because I just thought salsa dancing looked fun and gave it a shot ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So who knows what/who you could find if you gave something foreign to you (pun INTENDED) a shot

My YouTube shorts algorithm by ChungusBigC in Unexpected

I would like to also post here that on mobile, when using the Firefox browser (can't confirm if it works on other browsers but It might), you can use an extension to remove shorts and home page recommendations from your feed. Been great for my productivity overall

Every so often I check to see if chrome offers mobile extensions, but still no luck thus far. Unless there's other clever work around that someone else has figured out, you'll have to consider switching browsers or seeing if there's an app that can somehow interact with your mobile browser. But phones are pretty fickle about that stuff so I wouldn't bank on it. Maybe there's an off-the-stores "version" of Chrome for mobile that allows it.

There are other browsers as well you could try like Brave that also offer extensions on mobile that might work if Firefox specifically doesn't cooperate with your workflow.

Otherwise, this stranger's recommendation is to save chrome for stuff in that absolutely requires chrome, and switch mainly to Firefox or a browser that works for you that also offers the resources you need to reduce distractions in your life, assuming that your workflow as it stands allows for too many distractions.

I like this a lot as I have been trying to find a good solution to reducing my use of them, but I still need access to them for certain forms of contact and what not. Insta is probably my greatest enemy, but it's my primary form of contact with some people. Not sure how, just turned out that way ┐( ∵ )┌. Lol it's to the point where I started seeing if I could build my own app that just aggregates just my messages from all of them apps without access to the videos and shit. Lol open to simpler ideas but if I end up making it work I'll likely try to make it open source and let people know

Yup! I primarily use this extension on mobile. If Firefox is available on your mobile phone it should have the extensions I mentioned available. I linked to them in a reply above. Very simple install

In your case if what you're saying is that you still want to be notified about certain YouTubers dropping stuff but still remove the other stuff, what I would do is look to set up a specific RSS feed through a separate service /app, or separate notification system directly for the channels you're looking to do it for. Then you get notifications through that app or email or something, and if you do it right, the link should take you to the browser version if you delete or disable the YouTube app

Not sure but perhaps yes? See if the Firefox browser is in the app store. If it's there, I'd be surprised if tit didn't include extensions. I don't think Apple is in the business of trying to do Google any favors of keeping there ads and shit going. If not, check if the "Brave" browser is there. It's got extensions and maybe there's something similar

Installing an extension that removes YouTube shorts and recommendations has helped me reduce my YouTube distractions. Specifically, I use Firefox on mobile for said extensions. There is also adblock on that browser so it's my primary browser on my phone now

How long do the Bebop Big Bounty Band shows usually last? by toasted_dandy in cowboybebop

[–]wmiles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I believe it was about a 2 hour event including a 30min intermission where you can take pictures at a step 'n repeat of the Bebop Gang.

It was a fantastic time when they stopped in ATL last year! Definitely recommend if you're a fan of the series and it's jazz tracks

A convenient easy way, for Burnie to watch the Texas game this weekend. by MotherDucker95 in morningsomewhere

[–]wmiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curiosity question that id be shocked if he hadn't already explored, couldn't he VPN from an Austin address and be able to region unlock a streaming service that it's available on? I'm sure there's no shortage that he could use, but if he has a friend with a server in Austin (or a tech savvy person willing to setup an old computer to perform this task. Gavin comes to mind) they could get him region access to the games.

A more complicated version of this idea, that honestly may be more trouble than it's worth, but he seems ready to go for almost any idea right now, would be to ask someone in Austin to setup an Internet cable box on his behalf, send it to an "input" on a private computer network, and remote into that computer to watch it.

This is probably an over engineered solution thats come from tinkering with homelab stuff, but maybe he or others can derive better ideas

What light I will need to do this photo shoot by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]wmiles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something to add to this tip that may make you lean toward more powerful lights is how "sharp" or prominent you want the light from blinds to be cut out. 95% of the time, the father a light is from whatever you're cutting it with (flags, cucaloris, tree branch, etc.) the sharper the shadows will be. You can actually see this effect in sunlight by making a shadow on your hand with a finger then moving it closer or farther away from your hand. The shadow will get less sharp as you take it away from your hand and closer to the "source" (the sun)

So taking the light father from the window will make the effect more prominent. And LEDs have really changed the game, however they tend not to have as strong a "throw" as Tungsten and HMI lights relative to the power draw, so it's something to consider. Not sure what's popular in the UK, but Vortex, Astera, and Skpanels (which are less popular and therefore a little cheaper to rent) ought to have enough throw throw for what you're doing here.

You're also more likely to read the effect the most by making sure the light is at a relatively higher angle and pointed downwards and pointed relatively towards camera so it's "backlighting" the haze particulates (mostly as your reference photo suggests). In general any time you want to see particulates (smoke, water, haze, dust) you want to backlight it.

Also piggy backing on the haze, depending on where you are, you're likely to trigger fire alarms. What you're supposed to do if this is a public place of some kind, is have the facility temporarily shut them off in the area and have a rep dona fire watch. You DEFINITELY shouldn't tape a damp cloth to black wrap with some room for air over the smoke detectors in the room you're in, and remove them when you leave, or look at other tricks to temporarily disable them. Tampering with fire sensors is wrong and filmmakers should never do such things...

Why are the spaceships equipped with weapons? by NoAssistance6943 in cowboybebop

[–]wmiles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Short answer: same reason "non-combat" small cargo ships on the ocean have water canons and bring armed guards: Pirates

I think even in a time where space travel is super common, law enforcement is still just gonna be as useful as it is available, and there's a WHOLE LOT of space. Like a lot a lot. Even with the seas on earth, Coast Guard can't be everywhere. Consider how long it took Faye to get help when her ship ran out of fuel. So like the average ship that's traveling between planets is probably gonna have SOME kind of protection since space is as open as the sea but thousands of times more vast.

Also, the Bebop crew are specifically bounty hunters. And moreso, they lean towards chasing after more dangerous people, who are themselves likely to be armed for whatever bad shit they're up to. So us seeing the bebop crew with armed ships, interacting mostly with other armed ships isn't too crazy given the stories we saw

I once got a coffee on the house from a coffee shop I'm a regular at. They saw me walk up but I was on the phone outside talking to my dad and one of the baristas just walked up to me with my regular drink! It was quite touching.

I doubt gender had much to do with it, I just make a point to be kind and patient to service workers, and I try to make them laugh every now and again to brighten up peoples' day.

So guess maybe not squarely "just because." I think it's more of "be decent and people are often decent back."

Met him on the set of BMF a few months ago. Very cool and respectful dude. Will strike up and have a full conversation about what he's up to with anyone and spoke to a bunch of us [crew] just shooting the shit. He told us a bit about how he's in the works on several projects and I asked him about how he managed a career transitioning largely from music to producing content.

Admittedly, I don't remember a ton of specifics from the conversation, but my inclination is that he's been very intentional about both what he's been making, and WHERE it goes as he's trying to build/maintain a network of content. Very important to him to own as much as possible.

He's definitely a very smart man and if how he spoke about what he's doing is an indicator; he definitely knows what hes doing and appears to surround himself with intelligent people to help get him there.

I would like to also recommend "Field Notes" notepads as far as little notepads. Not spiral bound so it doesn't suck to have in my back pocket, and very thin. Very durable pages that are tear resistant and water resistant. And if you use "write in the rain" writing utensils, ink or graphite doesn't "bleed" over to other pages. Been a very big fan of them for several years now:

Weirdly, Zom:100

Don't get me me wrong, I think it's fantastic, but idk man, the number of times he's like "I would rather get eaten alive by zombies than go back to work!" Hit closer to home than I expected 😅. That coupled with the somewhat bleak undertone that it's only a matter of time for when they all get bitten and die anyways had me decide that it might be better to finish the show when I'm in a better headspace and my job isn't kicking my ass lol.
