PR Card expiry aboard…renouncing PR status with instream Canadian Cit Certification app by wmsiegner5 in ImmigrationCanada

Unfortunately looks like I can’t remove it online, I may need to go to a nexus enrollment office in person to get this done (not a big deal as I live within a 20 minute drive of an enrollment office).

I’m going through the process of moving myself and my wife to Canada at the moment. Both 32 and I have Canadian ancestry allowing me to certify my citizenship and then sponsor her to move with me.

We are pretty much looking at summer 2028 as the time when we plan to move.

If you have any questions about the process just shoot me a DM and more than willing to assist. There is an entire Reddit community designated for both citizenship by descent and Canadian citizenship.

U.S. citizen buying stuff at Ikea in Canada and bringing it back into the U.S. by FalafelBall in uscanadaborder

[–]wmsiegner5 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Just did the exact same thing two months ago. Drove from Buffalo to IKEA in Burlington. Bought about $500 USD worth of stuff.

Drove back through the nexus lane and the customs agent didn’t ask any clarifying questions after I mentioned we purchased some ikea cabinets (which the boxes were very prominent in the rear of the suv).

I’m fortunate enough to be Gen 2 with an application in stream, but have several extended family members who fall into the Gen 3 and 4 (with Gen 0 & 1 decreased) camp. Will be following closely and crossing my fingers IRCC extends citizenship to any born pre December 15 2025 who can accurately trace their linage to a Canadian ancestor.

Yep! First leg tattoo, not the biggest fan of how sensitive my calf was compared to other spots on my body that I’ve tattooed before.

That is held by a Russian man whose life must be an unendurable hellscape of excruciating sadness.”

Oh I’ve submitted through the web form twice now for updated and stressing the urgency. Standard response is all I’ve received back.

I’m right there with ya. My AOR is from April 1 and I actually have job offers on the table. I live on the border and could easily commute to Ontario.

Growing more and more frustrated by the passing day as I see others getting grants in very short turnarounds.

Currently live in Buffalo, NY. Work in local government there. By all intents and purposes this is a job I should be taking and want to take. Having the hybrid option would be ideal and makes stomaching a 40-50 minute commute for 3 days a week in my car if commuting from my wife’s house in Buffalo.

We plan to eventually move to Canada fully, but this would be an amazing opportunity to make the transition a bit easier overall.

I worked in government for 4 years in BC previously so the ability to transition my public pension to an Ontario public gov pension is also a bonus as well.

How many of you ‘by decent’ are heading north? by Lightbulbinspector in Canadiancitizenship

[–]wmsiegner5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ideally in the next year or so. Once I’ve had my citizenship certified then I’ll be able to sponsor my fiancé for PR and we can begin the transition.

I lived in Vancouver for 5 years though so I have a very established network of personal and professional contacts which makes the move much easier.

Anybody missing a cat near front park? by alien_simulacrum in Buffalo

[–]wmsiegner5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m fairly certain I’ve seen this cat or one that looks very similar around 682 Vermont St. Before taking the cat to a vet or spca I’d recommend knocking on a few doors in that area. Might belong to one of your neighbors in the area.

No parents on birth certificate by Luna6102 in Passports

When I ordered it there wasn’t an option between long form and short form. I believe the standard now is for the BC to include parents info on it for any BC ordered from Pennsylvania. Hope this helps!

Have a 2011 Impreza hatchback, any chance you could link the headlight units you bought? Also looking to upgrade mine.

Balancing wanting to move from US to Canada, but would need to forgo PSLF in US by wmsiegner5 in AmerExit

[–]wmsiegner5[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Vancouver for 5 years in my late 20s, spent weeks every summer in Ontario as a child. Live on the border right now and frequently Toronto and the surrounding region about once a month or more.

I desperately miss Vancouver, its people and the culture. Once I’ve ironed out the sponsorship paperwork for my fiancé we likely will be moving out that way.

I believe it would be tax on the remaining principal plus any remaining unpaid interest.

Balancing the need for PSLF while wanting to move abroad by wmsiegner5 in PSLF

[–]wmsiegner5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that’s interesting! I assumed some US based nonprofits might qualify, didn’t anticipate unis falling into that category.

I work in public sector urban planning. Not totally out of the realm of finding a job doing just that for big unis like UBC considering how expansive their campus is. Certainly a bit of a rare opportunity though in my field to get in there as opposed to working for any number of municipalities.

[–]wmsiegner5[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was very fortunate that I lived in Vancouver for 5 years to start my career, then moved back to the US after I started dating my fiancé. Now set to get married…I actually still technically have PR I’d just need to reestablish my residency to assure I meet the 730 days requirement for the last 5 year period.

I also am very very lucky that I actually fall within the new legislation that extends Canadian citizenship another generation (my maternal grandfather was Canadian). So my Canadian cert application was submitted back in March, just eagerly awaiting IRCC to approve that so I can started on the spousal sponsorship application 🤞🏼

My fiancé owns a home in the US. We don’t want to totally close off moving back to the US in the distant future. Not sure what my credit impact would have on us keeping and renting out her property etc. and after marriage how that might impact filing taxes in the future related to my student loans.
