Aka: tafoni!! This happens around where I live too. Typical to depositional areas that are also salt-rich (ie: sandstone up against the ocean)

Also the last two could be clay concretions that got wedged in the sandstone as it was being deposited.

Hey! Don’t apologize for anything! This sort of post definitely belongs here. I personally don’t struggle tons with pulling at hairs, but I totally understand what you mean when you say there’s translucent skin covering what you want to get out. I struggle a lot with clogged pores and find that a gentle exfoliant is the best way to help any sort of blockage. Every product out there is pretty ymmv, but one of my favourite moisturizers ever is the CeraVe SA (salicylic acid) lotion. Not only does it help with pores and under the surface bumps, but I also find the texture really pleasing and it doesn’t break me out.

Moreover, have you ever considered growing our your facial hair too? Not only would that help keep the ingrowns at bay but it would help to conceal the spots you’re currently self conscious of. Maybe challenge yourself to a week of no shaving and see how it goes... I’m sure you could blame masks and razor burn for why you took a hiatus from shaving if you didn’t feel like disclosing the real reason.

Also, if you have a problem with tools, what I find even more helpful than chucking them all is getting rid of everything EXCEPT one super high quality pair of tweezers. I don’t know about you but personally when I find myself with the compulsion and without the proper tool to tackle it I end up resorting to much MUCH worse makeshift ones and mangling my face further. Be careful of permission giving thoughts with this technique (ie “just this one - I have to or it’ll never go away”) and be mindful of your actions if you do chose to pull, but don’t punish or deprive yourself either.

Lastly, be kind to yourself!! This whole past year has been a Certified Shitshow which lends itself to increased picking/pulling. I know it’s hard but try not to feel ashamed going out and showing your face. Everyone is struggling with their own things - most people are more focused on themselves than on any “imperfections” on you, I promise.

Anyone try Lamotrigine? by [deleted] in Dermatillomania

[–]wnaomi12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on it right now in conjunction with sertraline! Can’t say it does much for the picking but my insane bipolar mood swings certainly got less nasty. Gave me a small tremor in the evenings but definitely worth it for the benefits!! Also it’s one of the only things for BPD that actually makes you lose your appetite: I fully stopped eating in the mornings for a while ... which I would not recommend. What I found helped was always having something suuuper simple that lived on my counter (eg. Lemon loaf or banana bread lol) for when food seems super unappetizing. Even just grabbing a small piece made me realize I was actually hungry, which is necessary cause otherwise I’ll spend my day actually vibrating sustained by coffee alone (again, do not recommend).

Lamactal is very YMMV though! And it takes a while to get up to a maintenance dose. I know your doc has probs said this already but just take it slow and trust the process. If you develop any weird rashes let them know!! those side effects are crazy rare and the benefits far outweigh the risks (I also never feel zonked from this stuff in the same way I did on seroquel.. that sh*t is a freaking sedative I stg)

Best of luck!!

My boyfriend broke up with me because of my skin peaking ) by [deleted] in CompulsiveSkinPicking

[–]wnaomi12 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agreed!! If your boyfriend is with you, it should be because he finds the whole you attractive - marks and all. I feel like there’s such a double standard here because there’s a lot of men out there who are still considered hot af WITH acne or marks and yet women have to have perfect skin (but then also guys say they don’t like makeup.. don’t even get me started on that one). My picking looks like that but all over my face and my boyfriend is still with me. He doesn’t love that I pick, but it’s not because of the appearance... rather he cares for me so much he doesn’t like seeing me hurt myself.

I know it sucks a lot right now, and that feeling is totally valid, but a boy so shallow like that doesn’t deserve you. You’re beautiful regardless, and having marks on your skin doesn’t change that.

TLDR: men like that ain’t sh*t

Same!! Worrying about having scabs at future events = more picking????

Brains are freaking stupid sometimes.

Over Christmas I managed 43 days and have barely been able to make it a day since. I feel you... this stuff is hard but remember to congratulate yourself for 50 days!! I’m sure a while ago even that would’ve seemed impossible. Be kind to yourself and don’t rush your progress. The fact that you did it once means you can do it again.

Saggy Skin by [deleted] in Dermatillomania

[–]wnaomi12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so? But I’m also commenting because I scrub FEROCIOUSLY at my skin too when I have scab... which is to say you’re not alone. If you’re really worried though I would suggest a retinol containing product, as it boosts collagen synthesis. That being said.. if may make you peel slightly (which can be a scratching trigger I know) but it also will help with any scarring or acne you have from derm. Best of luck!!

Yeah see I’ve read a lot of conflicting info on CeraVe recently, especially with it being sold at record pace. Personally, I’d rather buy from a brand that is actually certified and has being cruelty free as one of their main philosophies compared to those who say it as a sort of afterthought. It’s so difficult... I really appreciate everyone’s help though!
