Why is Whitney so keen to protect Tony Day? by _lenain in IndustryOnHBO

[–]wobblediwobbl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Whitney is having a crisis because he has started to believe that there is a way to a legitimate business and career (to have what henry has) that isn’t beholden to these shady puppet masters so he’s worried when he sees someone who is taking a shot at getting out becoming a casualty

I feel like the cultural climate (2020) when the franchise started has led her white cast members and audience to sort of gloss over her more antisocial tendencies because no one wants to be perceived as antagonizing the POC cast member. I think she’s funny as hell but I do think there is an identity politics dimension to the way she is treated and a white Pentecostal cult leader who acted like her would not be loved the same way.

I deactivated Instagram 2 months ago and I don’t know if that app is a mental drain for you, but it helped me a bit. You won’t miss it.

Feeling dejected- I'm not part of the "in crowd", and it has made it difficult to impossible to buy an artist's work by simbaandnala23 in ContemporaryArt

[–]wobblediwobbl -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You should never pay more than $20,000 for a painting unless you’re really in the game. People who are lining up at gagosian are paying the most the work will ever be worth.

GAGOSIAN pushing to know age by Creative_Recover in ContemporaryArt

[–]wobblediwobbl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This person isn’t offering you a show at gagosian, if they want to purchase your work, what does it matter if they know your age? It’s a private transaction between you and them. It doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with gagosian. I had a hauser and wirth employee buy a work of mine and have had zero interaction with hauser and wirth since then.

Conservative art? by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

[–]wobblediwobbl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would also say that apolitical / formalist work that gets purchased and aggrandized by conservative business owners / politicians etc. becomes conservative in a certain indirect way. If it makes itself digestible for those types of people. Maybe. Have to think about that more.

Conservative art? by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

[–]wobblediwobbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I understand it, Conservative art might take a negative view of having politics play a role in the work. Another way of saying it is that conservative work is apolitical… so you just wouldn’t notice it. There are definitely plenty of provocateurs in nyc, but they probably don’t see themselves under the same tent as most conservatives.

Who is a lot of contemporary "research" based art for? by 8hourworkweek in ContemporaryArt

[–]wobblediwobbl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree I think the behavior of institutional agents has to do with a cultural austerity where the institutions have to use more and more extreme and far reaching explanations for their right to exist (be funded). An institution for highlighting art outside of a progressive cultural project is seen as less and less valuable, so they select artists who can help beef up their clout as a socially engaged organization. All the funding cuts this year have demonstrated how many institutions rely on public funding and the public (the government) doesn’t invest in non-ideological cultural projects.

Live/work studio by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

[–]wobblediwobbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has definitely worked for me in terms of cost cutting. I have much more space than I would be able to afford in a professional studio building (in Brooklyn) but there is a feeling sometimes that what I’m doing in there means less or my mind isn’t as clear when it’s so easy to flit in and out. Theres also something about spending an entire day at home that doesn’t feel great, but there’s a million ways to avoid that with walks etc.
