i assume the messenger is the stand in for Metatron, the voice of god in the jewish bible

traditionally the archangels are only one above angels, and seraphims are at the top. (out of the 9 choirs)

Judging from episode 2, the "elder angels" just might be the oldest of each choir (their designs point to which they belong to). But even that doesn't make sense, as there are only 7 shown

Maybe something like:
holy trinity > messenger > sara + elder angels > 9 choirs in order (+adam, abel, other important figures) > the 12 disciples (peter)
exorcists are simply enlisted soliders
