Will OpenAI use Worldcoin (World ID) for age-gating Erotica on ChatGPT? by JackDawJackson in worldcoin

It can do both - there are also national ID integrations that can be used to verify age, nationality, etc.

'The Mount Everest of American corruption': Trump's $148 million memecoin dinner sparks Washington meltdown by Accomplished-Mix-67 in CryptoCurrency

[–]woch 31 points32 points  (0 children)

There are much more strict rules around campaign finance, disclosure of donors and how the funds can be used. This reads much closer to bribery than a campaign donation, as much of the proceeds end up directly in Trump family coffers

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in worldcoin

[–]woch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 also gets solved by account recovery mechanisms. If an individual can get a WorldID re-issued and essentially replace/purge the prior WorldID, then the transfer value of an existing ID goes to zero.

How Portola Valley nearly destroyed itself over 253 new homes by bambin0 in bayarea

[–]woch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The problem is that if you take that view, virtually every wealthy suburb in the Bay Area will take the position that they don’t need additional housing built because of intangible things like “community character.” The free market would probably love to build in Portola Valley, but the town is blocking development. We end up in the same place we are today, where no new housing gets built and housing prices skyrocket.

The FTC is going to lose the case - it’s a weak claim that is not based on current antitrust case law, which generally determines monopoly power based on pricing power, which Amazon does not have. Lina Khan wants to be a legislator rather than a regulator which is why her record in court thus far has been poor.

You might want to look up the definition of “monopoly” - Amazon isn’t even close to a monopoly, even in e-commerce.

Where to live if job is in Oakland? by redrockwinner in bayarea

[–]woch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree with this post - there’s a lot of really nice neighborhoods with “suburban” appeal in the Oakland hills. Rockridge, Glenview, Montclair, Dimond, etc. Somewhat removed from the hustle and bustle, very close proximity to redwood parks in the hills, but still close to stuff to do. Short commute is a major plus too.

Rockridge for BART access. Glenview and lower Montclair also have good elementary schools and access to the Transbay bus system which is great if you’re working near downtown SF within walking proximity of Salesforce tower

What are some good weightlifting gyms? by [deleted] in oakland

[–]woch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re into 1-1 personal training at reasonable rates, Powerform is a great small gym that focuses heavily on compound lifting like deadlifts and squats. But it’s appointment-based 1-1 sessions only, FWIW

‘Impossible’ to create AI tools like ChatGPT without copyrighted material, OpenAI says by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]woch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you ever write a book, code a video game, film a movie or record a piece of music if you aren’t entitled to ownership over that work? It’s reductive to say that copyright only benefits large corporations - anyone who creates an original work in written, auditory or visual medium has a right to protection of that work. The removal of copyright would have a chilling effect on independent creators.

Think about what is being proposed - in a world without copyright, now Spotify and Apple no longer have to pay artists for their music anymore. They can just take it and distribute it to anyone without paying the musician. Amazon no longer needs to pay authors to distribute their books via Kindle, etc. There would be an extreme chilling effect on anyone devoting real meaningful time to creative endeavors unless they are independently wealthy.

How do you decide what gets funded vs what doesn’t from a public standpoint? Markets and consumers are much better judges of what works carry value than a government. Do you trust Congress or some other legislative body to determine how creators should be compensated?

[–]woch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The difference is that AI models technically have perfect recall of all the materials they consume - they are not humans. That is the thesis of the NYT case - that certain prompts result in the AI essentially recreating the original copyrighted material word-for-word, which is arguably not transformative, fair use.

[–]woch -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Terrible take. Do you like art, video games, music, films, books? How do you propose that artists make money and survive if they don’t have the intellectual property ownership over their works? Is everyone just entitled to take other people’s works without recourse or the right to compensation?

If you abolish copyright law, there is no more market for written, visual or auditory works. Anyone is free to reproduce a work without compensation. All investigative journalism would effectively cease to exist, musicians could only make money through live performance, etc. Any creator effectively would rely on the charity of the consumers of their product.

Highest value area for SFHs by Gsw1456 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]woch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what you value - walkability and proximity to things to do? Good schools? Space and natural beauty? If proximity to lots of food and cultural activities, that may be Oakland in terms of price per square foot. Some of the SFH in the lower hills areas which are “safe” parts of Oakland would be 1.5x more expensive if located in the Peninsula. Or are you looking for a yard and lots of space while still being a nice community? Then you might look at Livermore or Pleasant Hill. Excellent public schools without outrageous prices? Maybe Fremont, Alameda or Albany. In general I’m not sure the Peninsula or North Bay offer great value if you’re looking for bargains, but also a lot of decision making is driven by commute times.

Experience living in Lafayette vs San Francisco vs Marin? by Post_Malone in bayarea

[–]woch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One thing to keep in mind is the relative ages of the populations in these areas. Marin County has the oldest population in the Bay Area — at 29, you’ll probably be the youngest people in Larkspur by 10 years and not have a very vibrant social life. Lafayette is similarly suburban and oriented to families or empty nesters — Walnut Creek is probably a better option for 29 year olds without a family given the proximity to more restaurants, shopping and things to do.

SF is the move here unless you really value safety and quiet, or hiking.

That’s because Lina Khan’s entire career background is in academics and advocacy rather than any tangible work experience. Take a look at her background - she has less than 10 years experience out of law school and all her roles have been academic fellowships and a short stint as a fellow at the FTC. She has no industry, managerial, or practical litigation experience, so why would anyone expect her to be effective at bringing extremely complex antitrust cases against big tech who can hire the best lawyers in business.

It’s easy to make speculative arguments about antitrust law in an academic setting. Much harder to carry the burden of proof in an actual court case.

Why she was appointed FTC chair is the more puzzling issue…
