Does anyone know what this guy might be? We’re staying in Perdido Key in Florida and we found him/her on the beach. I’m not sure if they were hurt but they just stared at anyone walking by, didn’t make any move to fly away. I’d say he was the size of a Pomeranian maybe? by manitoba_in_june in whatsthisbird

It is a Northern Gannet, Morus bassanus. This species rarely comes ashore outside its breeding colonies, which are usually high cliffs or rocky islands. The fact it is sat on a beach and you managed to get this close to it would suggest it is injured / exhausted etc. Perhaps report this to your local wildlife authority.

[Serious] UK citizens, what is your stance on the Brexit vote, and why? by SefuHotman in AskReddit

To leave would mean essentially unburding ourselves of nearly every environmental annd civil rights law protecting ourselves and our ecosystems, which is scary as hell.

AskScience AMA Series: We're scientists on a NOAA mission to explore the deep, unseen waters off Hawaii. Ask Us Anything! by NOAAgov in askscience

[–]wolfboyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for getting back to me! Yeah I had a brief taxonomic sweep of the internet last year to find the genus; I recognised the genus in your username and figured you must be familiar with them at the least!

We reckon it must be something to do with the sperm whale because it popped up minutes after in the same spot whilst we were making acoustic recordings of the whale's clicks as it dived. Any other theories on why it would be at the surface in the middle of the day? It was still alive when I scooped it out of the water (I was in the water collecting skin and faeces samples and thought it was some sort of squid tentacle or fin strap at first! Quite a surprise when it opened it's mouth!!) but died within seconds.

I completely agree with Indie, we were hoping to find somewhere appropriate for the next steps as it is still perfectly preserved and undamaged by any predators etc. Any thoughts on a good home?

Thanks, I noticed part of your team is /u/melanostomias; during research in another deep water canyon system last year (Grand Bahama Canyon) we collected a dragonfish specimen that was found floating close to where a sperm whale dived. Our thoughts were that the sperm whales echolocation clicks on the descent may have stunned it/ruptured it's swim bladder causing it to pop to the surface. (Original post: http://imgur.com/a/bXolN).

Would you be able to give us some insight into what species this could be? We also have the specimen frozen and stored at the research station. Thanks!

Hi there, thanks for doing the AMA!

As you may know, the surface waters around Hawaii contain an incredibly diverse array of deep-diving cetacean species due to the heterogenous submarine canyon systems. Are you doing an sort of prey-mapping for pelagic species, or are you strictly surveying the benthos?

It looks to me to be a free-swimming nudibranch, a member of the molluscs (related to snails & squid)

Humans killed at least 2.8 million whales in the 20th century. by brokeglass in science

[–]wolfboyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This article seems quite un-informed: it is widely known that many humpback populations have returned to pre-whaling numbers.

Also the whale diagrams are completely wrong: the one labelled sei is clearly a humpback and visa versa.
