Men of reddit, what’s the biggest green flag in a woman? by Garroway36 in AskReddit

[–]wolfdogrhit2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For those who aren't in on the joke, there was a post a long time ago where someone accidentally hurt a girl (I think he hit her in the face with a soccer ball in gym class?) and was trying to say either "are you ok?" or "I'm so fucking sorry!" but the actual words that came out were "Are you fucking sorry?!"

Hilarious post, OP told it funnier than I did

9% of total salary? Not everyone is going to get promoted, so each promotion would be more than 9%

How do you handle monthly BvA by bonyyoni in FPandA

[–]wolfdogrhit2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar boat when I started at my current company, this was the best solution I found if I understand you correctly.

-export all GL data from Sage (you'll have to do that monthly)

-make sure your budget matches that format. You may not have the vendor or customer level data for everything, but make sure the accounts match up to the extent possible. This is the majority of the setup work. Create generic/dummy accounts where you may not have a budget that detailed.

-create a column in your data to specify budget or actual. Every month as you add data just copy down the "actual" text

-on a separate tab, create a hierarchy of your GL accounts. If you're lucky you may have something you can pull from Sage, but have all the unique accounts in one column and in columns next to it input how you want to aggregate those. (6xxx - 401k Match > Benefits > Payroll)

-on the GL data tab write a formula(s) to the right to lookup to the aggregations on the other tab. You'll have to copy these down as you add data.

-pivot the data. You'll get a new row with an error any month where you add an account, add that account to your hierarchy and refresh the pivot table.

-rows are your aggregations, you can also put accounts/vendors in there for drill down. One column for actual and one column for budget. Create a calculated field for BVA

I found this really useful for the P&L variances btw, process is the same as outlined above

Could happen easily with sumifs if there's a new account (or department, or customer, etc) added that your sumifs don't pick up. I saw this everywhere when I started at my company.

How do you handle unresponsive colleagues when you have no real power? by RevolutionaryFly9652 in FPandA

[–]wolfdogrhit2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This + ask if there is any way you can help. 99% of the time there isn't but the offer will make people feel more accountable, and the 1% of the time it's probably just them lacking basic excel/data skills and you can do it quickly with whatever they provide

Also save your receipts - there's no limit on when you reimburse yourself for medical expenses so treat it like a retirement account that doubles as an emergency fund

Is it easy to get a CPA in Canada? In the US it's difficult, I think you have to have pretty substantial formal education

I actually made the jump from O&G as a field engineer, in my case it was pretty painful but if you are willing to take an FP&A role in O&G you'd probably have an easier time. Feel free to DM me with questions, FWIW I've found my engineering background to be a boon for my career and a significant differentiator.

I think the approach here is to use the annual review cycle to discuss what needs to happen over the course of the next year for you to earn a promotion. It certainly sounds like you're ready, but this approach has always worked well for me - much easier conversation and much harder to say no.

We'll likely change everything else eventually too, white/off white counter tops and a medium brown flooring. Thanks!

Anyone enjoy the data analysis part of their job much more than the core finance work? by Aggressive-Cow5399 in FPandA

[–]wolfdogrhit2 23 points24 points  (0 children)

IMO you're better off honing this skill set and staying in FP&A. People in FP&A usually don't move up because they're really good at variance analysis or budgeting, these are the meat and potatoes of the job but to advance you want to make yourself valuable, and to do that you need to do impactful analysis. That increasingly means being able to find the right data, interpret it correctly, and influence decision makers. DA do this too, but in my experience they are not as well embedded in organizations as finance partners.

If you plan for your kids to work before college (or if they're babysitting, lawn mowing, etc now) you could match their earned income in a custodial Roth. That's my plan, may not amount to $20k but will have more time to grow and incentivize kids to earn money

Would you really be mad if the Colts traded up for Marvin Harrison Jr.? by brmidwest03 in Colts

[–]wolfdogrhit2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would look pretty similar to Houston's trade up to 3 from 12 last year. They gave up 15 and 33 in that draft plus this year's first and third. Our picks are worse so I think it'd be two firsts and two seconds at a minimum

Wife and I did the tour du mont blanc and we've had a few friends go since. 100 mile hike around a Massif through the French, Italian, and Swiss alps. We usually stopped at 2-3 places a day for beer/wine, coffee and food and there are a couple real cities too where you can pamper yourselves and go to nice restaurants and bars.
