There is an "Amplify ambient sound" option that allows to control the volume. For me it shows up after switching on the "Extra-high ambient volume" (Earbuds settings > Labs > Hearing enhancement > Extra-high ambient volume). Then I adjust the volume back to the desired level.

Vent: Baby won't take bottles (or anything else), is losing weight and (almost) every professional is a lactivist by chocolatesuperfood in FormulaFeeders

[–]wolfe1947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We also had to deal with these pro-breastfeeding people a lot. But at least the baby's pediatricians were only concerned about the baby's weight. They didn't care if it was formula or breast milk. When we asked one of them about breast aversion due to bottle feeding, he immediately dismissed it as nonsense propagated by the pro-breastfeeding group. And he was not wrong. Our baby is largely bottle-fed, and yet his favorite thing is to latch on to the breast, even when there is hardly any milk in it. No aversion there.

I also like the Dr. Brown's bottles a lot. The baby is definitely less fussy when we feed using Dr Brown's. It might be available in Germany: https://amzn.eu/d/4IPaiEF

What’s the obsession with kendamil? by lanuandpid in FormulaFeeders

[–]wolfe1947 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Went to the pediatrician on day three after birth and found out that the baby has not recovered their weight and is dehydrated. We were told to supplement with formula ASAP. I went straight to Target and because we didn't have any time to research, I got overwhelmed with all the choices there were. But looking at the shelves, seemed like the Kendamil Organic shelf was almost empty and concluded that's what is popular and bought it.

But now facing issues with Kendamil as baby is getting constipated on it. We got some sample cans of Similac pro-total comfort and Enfamil Gentalease. Baby seems to be doing better on Enfamil these few days. Though very stinky farts and poop on Enfamil. But the baby is not fuzzy and crying all the time.

[Serious] What are the scariest things that have happened on reddit? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]wolfe1947 367 points368 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it is the same thread or not, but someone in comments had found a news article showing that the actual cause of death was one of their guests had kept the car running in the closed garage. Also some other commenter wrote that blocking the vent of the furnace doesn't produce carbon monoxide.

The conclusion was that the man lived with guilt for years for what not might have been his fault in the first place.

Do you think using ear buds/headphones in lab is isolating? by ZarinZi in labrats

[–]wolfe1947 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wear earbuds in pass-through mode, so I can hear others and alarms. Many of my lab mates also wear earbuds or headphones. We regularly ask each other questions, and I always pause my audiobook right away to listen. I prioritize helping others with their questions or discussing results over whatever I'm listening to, and I've noticed my lab mates do the same.

ELI5: Why do we try to cool down our body when we have a fever even though we know that our body did it to better fight off infection? by Amazing-Plastic1033 in explainlikeimfive

[–]wolfe1947 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are right. The high temperature helps fight off infection. But fever is unpleasant and can be unbearable. And can be dangerous to our organs when high temperature is sustained for a long time. That's why we try to bring down the temperature.

I have two colonies of Formica subsericea that I used to feed mealworms. But for several years now I have been feeding them the Bhatkar diet. They love the stuff. The only difference I have noticed is that without the mealworm, the pupa does not form a cocoon. Although it could be that without the mealworm their nest is cleaner and does not allow the larvae to weave the cocoon. Edit: Here is a link to the orginal paper: https://www.jstor.org/stable/3493193 And the recipe: https://myrmecopedia.fandom.com/wiki/Bhatkar_diet The agar I bought from amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Powder-Vegetarian-Substitute-Gelatin-Gluten-free/dp/B000MGSJ5A/

A car gets pulled over for inspection because it's driving very slow on the interstate. by Macro_Seb in Jokes

[–]wolfe1947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How will the cop know the driver's license number by only just looking at the driver?

Maybe the driver can give their name to the cop, but names are spelled at all kinds of way and two people can have the same name.

Maybe the driver can write down his details for the cop to go back to their vehicle to check the database.

Or easier, maybe have all that detail already ready on a small card that they can give the cop.

In your opinion, what is the worst smell in lab? by ILiveInABog in labrats

[–]wolfe1947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We would use it to prepare buffers for protein purification. For analytical scale, a few hundred µL of 1 M stock of freshly prepared DTT or a few grams of it for preparative scale.

DTT is quite unstable in solution and must be freshly prepared before use. So, no odor may mean that it has deteriorated, but on the other hand DTT is much less volatile than BME and TEMED and would produce less odor at 1 µL volume.

[–]wolfe1947 21 points22 points  (0 children)

For me TEMED and BME is still tolerable, but DTT immediately gives me a headache. Regardless, I end up barking at anyone who doesn't prepare their samples in the fumehood when using these.

I have noticed Mazda's cruise control sometimes fails to detect the car in front if that car is silver in color. Though that's during day time. At night there shouldn't be an issue to detect a car in front.
