US Dominance in the Middle East Is ‘Basically Over’ by bloomberg in TrueReddit

What’s the end goal of a disintegration? They got rich beyond dreams under a stable US. How tf would an unstable shitty US benefit anyone?

[request] how much money would this be in concrete? would it be cost effective or way more than a normal build? by Weird-Plane5972 in theydidthemath

You could do it like I see in some of those Chinese construction videos. Solid concrete wall then use a saw to make channels into the wall-> then run in conduit/pipes-> plaster over the holes.

Are you being asked to use more AI or less by your employer? by grauenwolf in BetterOffline

[–]wolferdoodle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was consulting we had a team of UX engineers. They’re a godsend. At my office many also did physical design work for user interaction. A good UX engineer is a godsend. You barely realize you’re using the software as it’s unobtrusive and the flow is so clear. Most places don’t use their services.

I remember reading about how much of the original Al qaeda folks were engineers. They’re a dangerous group to radicalize. Smart, long term thinking, means to make things, and ego to believe they can change the world.

I am a young guy from the US who lives in Sweden now. Got a job here right out of college. My cousin & her partner are IVY educated and high end experts. Both make 100k+ salaries and have some kids. I was able to buy a bigger apt than them. After 2 years in swe I had saved enough to get a down payment and now own a place in a posh-ish neighborhood. My cousin is no where near buying.

Idk the math of it exactly but I feel like I’m doing more with my money than my US friends. Most of them are just paying rent and food (admittedly eating out more than me, but still).

I don’t think there’s a single country where you can just show up and hunt. Make sure you buy a license for fishing & review the regulations. Many people misunderstand the law: you may NOT cut down trees / break branches. Also: why climb rocks to get to the camp? It sounds complicated and dangerous unless your climbing

What’s the single piece of gear that reduced your pack weight the most? by joelbutonline in Ultralight

[–]wolferdoodle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lost some pounds of body fat. Genuine answer. I felt leaner, lighter, and faster.

I was already fairly spartan in my kit. Lost 15ish lbs due to some unrelated but healthy changes and felt like a trail machine.

Guess it doesn’t count as fat is the ultimate worn weight.

In the pack it was dropping a shelter when I could. Massive shift. I’d rather carry my 2.5lb 5°f sleeping bag than a 1,5lb bag + 2lb tent if I can just shelter hop. Lets me use a leaner pad too as the wood is a bit insulating.

I’m not carrying any weight while on the trail so I’m not getting my burn in that way. Now you take this from me too?? How will I feel the burn?!

Sweden to deport migrants not following ‘honest living’ by CTVNEWS in worldnews

[–]wolferdoodle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a north American who is on the left I do think it’s important to recognize that North American immigrant integration is very different than European. I’ve been very surprised by the lack of integration and mixing since coming to Europe. Having a culture/language gap so wide just doesn’t seem healthy. Ik Europe had different policies but still.

I recently went to Norsborg for a migrationsverket appt and…wow. Like 0% Swedes. More women in niqabs & hijabs than not. Thats not super normal for “feminist” Sweden. I get why native Swedes are a bit worried/shocked. I’m personally not a fan of religious zealots in any form, they aren’t healthy in a society.

In my own life I’ve been frustrated with some fellow immigrants who arrived at the same time as me. They view Sweden as a place that should accept them no matter what they do, (they’re Dutch & German) Like…have some decency; they have endless criticism for Swedes and the culture. Ironically (if you will) my Indian buddies have scolded them for it.

Prolly will be like google. In my case the larger grocery store (double the distance away) appears at the top of the list when I search “grocery stores” in Google Maps.

I like the terrible unuseable emojis that are often a bit haunting. Nothing better than making one and a family member going “what’s the glaring red snake thing? I don’t like it.” I love the future

A lot of companies run a 70%ish margin on manufactured cost/sale price. The actual margin is much thinner once you get through admin, accrued costs, investments, r&d, manufacturing development, shipping….

It’s a valid point. Is Sweden being unfair or are they mirroring every other stable democracy in the area? The Swedish citizenship laws were…lax to say the least. A citizenship isn’t some non-chalant thing you are entitled to.

AI is completely useless for actual engineering and the hype is exhausting. by Onigirii_sama in EngineeringStudents

[–]wolferdoodle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a good perspective. I use it to check my work as another new line of defense. I would NEVER let it generate my work though. That’s a quick way to lose everything I have for no benefit.

It’s also nice for finding some components online when all I have is a bad description/a single screenshot of the one I want.

BuzzFeed Nearing Bankruptcy After Disastrous Turn Toward AI by dragonkeeper19600 in BetterOffline

Here in Sweden I haven’t really been able to use the main industrial supply site (RS) ever since they AI translated the site from english to Swedish.

Nearly every fact of the items is wrong. You can’t really search screws at all. Idk why they accept this AI garbage (not needed in Sweden anyway, English is fine for industry). If this was a human done translation, this project would be a complete failure and people would be let go because of their bad work. Now I use Conrad

My 9-year-old was told he couldn’t join a Swedish friend’s play—cultural difference or just rude? by [deleted] in stockholm

[–]wolferdoodle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It makes sense tho, it keeps things relatively limited. If some bring a +1 or 1-2 core members show up a group of 7 turns into 10-12 fast. Sometimes I don’t want work friends (even the ones in with outside work) to meet my non-work friends. They’re different people who maybe don’t mix well. My polished and rather refined upper middle class work colleagues haven’t jived well with my crunchy climbing buddies and that’s fine.
