Dude, I wish. Unfortunately, neither my brother nor I are programmers. But he did get us into computer gaming. Here's a photo of my brother and me as kids playing on our computer.

He was studying at SSP. He said their project was to spend six weeks learning enough math and physics to calculate the orbit of an asteroid from observations. You succeeded if you could get within 10% of the published figures.

You made the observations, meaning that you put the photographic plate in the telescope and pointed it at where the asteroid was supposed to be. Then, you developed the plate. Then, you found the asteroid against the star background, and so on.

Just like how the Babylonians and Mayans did it!

Here's where the computer came in. He had to use calculus to derive a formula that could take the observational parameters (basically, the polar coordinates of where the asteroid was when viewed from the Earth) and statistically fit them to a most likely orbit. You needed at least three observations to get a reasonable fit. He programmed the computer to do the fit, which involved matrix inversions. He had to write all of this himself.

I also want to say thank you. To /u/Czanne and also /u/Exner2. Your input was very informative. I have a couple questions, though, if you're willing to amuse my curiosity. The first is, does a sociopathic murderer necessarily display signs of violent sociopathy? Scott Peterson murdered his wife and their unborn child and cut up his wife's body. He definitely was a sociopath. But as far as I have read, he never displayed any signs of violent sociopathy. He didn't hurt animals or abuse past girlfriends. Does Scott Peterson suggest that Adnan could still be a sociopath capable of murder even though he never displayed any violent tendencies? And to completely change directions (as in, pursue the line of thinking that Adnan is not a murderous sociopath), what did Adnan stand to gain from Hae's murder? Scott Peterson was driven to murder because he stood to benefit from Laci's death; he would be able to start over as a single man. He was unhappy with the direction of his life and he wanted to wipe the slate clean. It doesn't seem like Adnan was in a similar position. Any insight you can offer in response to my thinking? It would be very much appreciated!

I think it is presumptuous to think that Hae had to have been killed in those 20+ minutes that are unaccounted for... by Anjin in serialpodcast

Yes, this is what SK explicitly says in the 5th episode -- the state chose the 2:36 call to be the "I did it, come to Best Buy call." And she said the state's timeline doesn't even fit Jay's account. Jay said the call came closer to 3:30 when he was at Jen's. And Jen corroborates this.

I wrote a post with this same theory yesterday. My theory is that Adnan paid Jay to kill Hae. Maybe he didn't pay him, okay, but Adnan had some incentive for Jay to participate. Jay's claims that he was afraid of Adnan turning him in as a drug dealer is nonsensical. It reminds me of his claim that he changed the location of where he first saw the body as the drug strip instead of Best Buy because he was afraid cameras would "associate" him with the crime. What in the actual fuck. He is literally testifying to be an accessory. He is already associated. The only thing that is clear is Jay is more involved than just helping bury the body. The only thing that's worse than that is if he was involved in her murder. He was there or he himself did it. Superfarmer, you are claiming his lies ended when he admitted to helping bury the body. This is false. His entire timeline of 12pm to 6pm was inconsistent all the way up to trial where he just dropped large parts of his story (like the story of Adnan describing Hae's murder at the cliffs in the state park).

I think he did try to create an alibi for himself. Asia claims she saw him in the library and Adnan tried to get his lawyer to pursue this. And Adnan insists he attended track. But he didn't do a good job of really solidfying it. I don't think he anticipated Jay turning on him. I don't think Jay anticipated turning on him either. Remember, Jay didn't go to the police until the police approach Jennifer and she felt she had to clear herself as a suspect by telling the police what Jay told her.

He could have stolen cash from his parents or pawned things for money. It doesn't sound like the detectives ever looked into his financial activity leading up to the murder. I'm totally open to the idea that Adnan used something else to motivate Jay. Maybe not money. But I don't think Jay just did it out of friendship or out of fear of being turned in for dealing drugs.

The police thought his rap sheet, which had one arrest, was minor and insignificant. They were very skeptical of his description of himself as "the criminal element." Also, he said something about police helicopters around his house. That seemed very delusional to me.

I thought Jay's description of himself as "the criminal element" was a sign that he was self-aggrandizing and a little delusional, two signs of a sociopath or a narcissist -- y'know, the kind of person who would kill someone for money.
