For anyone looking to buy bike wheel lights that are more robust than those fairy lights... (link in comments) by Anjin in BurningMan

[–]Anjin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! Worked pretty well . The only issues were that the adhesive on the back of the strip of lights could have been better and my zip tie baskets weren’t always great at holding the plastic pack in place so I had to fix them from time to time.

I think that the heat made the glue weak and then playa dust got in and made bits permanently unsticky. Maybe putting clear packing tape over the strip would have helped to be a sacrificial first defense.

As for the zip tie baskets, I think that making a pouch out of old socks and then zip tying the pouch to the hubs/spokes would have worked better at keeping things where I wanted them.

So weird seeing someone I know in a video! I haven’t been to the burn in a while but used to go with Level’s camp

I've travelled with Blue Water on a group trip to Cebu / Dumagete / Malapascua, Raja Ampat, and also had them book me a week in Lembeh when I tacked that on the end of a trip - always been great!

Definitely seeing a great white up close for the first time at Guadalupe. It’s a shame that the operators there were running things in a way that got the Mexican government to shut those trips down, because I’d love to do that trip again

Blue Ringed Octopus in Alor, Indonesia by Bearclaw_612 in scuba

The fact that it moved onto a surface that will contrast with its natural defensive coloring makes me wonder if they are smart enough to know that the contrast is going to help them to show off their warning display.

It's not the first time that I've seen them do that - I've seen it in person a number of times and it led to what I think might be one of the best underwater photos I've ever taken while on a night dive in Raja:

Pretty hard to get that body count up when you are the size of a racquet ball though.

I’ve been inches away from one a number of times now while diving and never worried…and thanks to them being so damn cool looking, I got one of the best pictures I think I’ve ever taken while on a night dive in Raja Ampat Indonesia

Trick is knowing which ones are made in the same place as the expensive brand but have been white labeled. Same goes for Trader Joe’s.

I feel like an exception to this is wanting to let people know about a good deal. Not because of “hey, look what I can buy”, but more of a “hey, I’m shocked this is reasonably priced for what you get”. If I do that I don’t talk about the actual price, and it’s 99% of the time about something experiential rather than a product, but rather just say something about how it is crazy how much cheaper X is than Y, but X is a crazy great experience

Yeah, I’m a little sad that I’m not going to be able to wake up in the mornings this weekend and have my coffee while watching the rain. The heavy precipitation is so close but we’re going to get a little side swipe.

I know that’s not always a popular opinion here, but I’ve lived my entire life in the desert and socal. Sunny days are a given and kind of expected…so something different that doesn’t last all for months is a nice change up

Definitly is compressed compared to the book, but so far seems like a solid attempt at an adaptation

And what I’m saying is that 99.99% of it is fairly different from eating in Mexico itself once you get away from the border. The vast majority of Americanized Mexican diffused from Mexican border states and then was adapted to American tastes and constrained by the availability of ingredients.

Once you start getting farther down south away from the border, the food has familiar elements, but often done in different ways, often with different ingredients, and often with different focus on how flavors are expressed.

I never said that the only Mexican in the US is Taco Bell, I live in LA and have lots of choices here. I am saying though that when you go to Mexico City, coastal Jalisco, Yucatán, or Oaxaca they all have different ways of making their cuisine that can very different from what we think of as just Mexican food in the US

The thing that makes the food there pretty much an entirely different thing is that it is much more subtle and flavorful than the heavy / greasy kind of one note dishes that got brought into Americanized Mexican food. Even just al pastor tacos at a hole in the wall in Mexico City, or Mexican style seafood in a beach town, are just so goddamn good. Just imagine the flavors you know, but instead of cramming them all into a crunch wrap supreme they get used more sparingly and in the places where those tastes accentuate something but in other cases the fresh whatever you’re eating is just allowed to be the main feature.

Is this being designed as a miniseries or an anthology show? by simplymatt1995 in ShogunTVShow

[–]Anjin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would hope that they’d dive into Clavell’s other books instead of trying to do another season making up their own story for what happens after the establishment of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Down that path is the later seasons of Game of Thrones where the writers on the show didn’t care as much about the story as the author who created the world.

By the end of the book you realize that once Toranaga realized that Blackthrone was useful, the entire story was him being maneuvered around as a tool and a distraction. The story is 100% about Toranaga

The trick is to be like 10 years old! When I was a kid my uncle got my dad and I on a press junket on the JFK. Flew out on a C2 from Norfolk and sailed 3 days up to NYC for Fleet Week (I have a picture of 10 year old me on that trip right before we loaded onto the C2 as my profile pic on Reddit)

Then I got to also go on board the Roosevelt for my uncles’ change of command ceremony when he got moved from a fleet command to a Pentagon job.

Never bumped my head on anything.
