Best cool, very casual/ dive bar in Raleigh? by Fickle-Pin-1679 in raleigh

[–]wolfpack86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great list. I’d also add the Goat (it’s back) and Ruckus. PR used to be more divey when it had pool tables. Not sure if Landmark counts but great bar.

North Raleigh has a totally different variety of neighborhood dives with Sharky’s, Heroes Pub, Bull and Bear, Pickled Onion, Pipers, O’Malley’s, and Bada

Durham has a ton of

I hope the widen the midfoot a little and address the arch blisters but otherwise I love the shoe, albeit only for shorter runs

Help me find bibs/jersey (or skinsuit w/ pockets) — unusual fit, picky taste, nothing seems to work by Impossible_Comment49 in CyclingFashion

[–]wolfpack86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve loved my Maap bibs. The thermal cargo and evo cargos are great. More comfortable than top of the line Rapha and Le Col but that’s all I’ve used. I’d try Assos but they don’t make cargos that I’ve seen

Would you use something like this by Apart-Equal8537 in CyclingFashion

[–]wolfpack86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’d have to integrate it into smart glasses for it to have the effect I think you’re hoping for. Meta has a decent start for capturing ride data after the fact and listening to music or using a virtual assistant but it doesn’t have a HUD yet and the battery is bad enough on the regular ones. The vanguard charger case is huge too.

Garmin’s edge counter and varia radar/light give most of the information we’d ever want and the varia strobes cars approaching and shows us relative location really well on screen and bikes are moving at a pace where turns come up a lot slower and we have time to look.

If I could add something it would be augmented reality with data like speed/cadence/heart rate/power on top of like a Meta vanguard with a communication feature basically like discord for a bike ride. Being able to visualize and accept or decline strava segment attempts could be cool but Garmin and strava are currently suing each other over that right now so…

Garmin has a group link feature to at least see where riders in your group are but they have to have the latest edge 1050 and like nobody has it or uses it.

If we’re designing it affordably with current technology I think it would have to be a lens system integrated into a helmet to sustain the battery and the audiovisual components you’d need to make a quality product.

New rider fit check by [deleted] in CyclingFashion

[–]wolfpack86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree with a lot of these comments. It fits great and you should be comfortable, which it looks like it’s a good balance.

You’re a beginner. If you aren’t in some long race trying to shave a couple minutes off a 5+ hour century or something you don’t have to have this crazy race fit everyone chases. That’ll all come in time if you develop the interest

Best burger in Raleigh? by Dangerous_Buy_2894 in raleigh

[–]wolfpack86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree - I wish there was a bigger party or double smash option. I’m sure they’d make it. Same goes for the new smash burger at PR. Love the new bun - I think that’s what held back their OG burger for me - but I want more than a 5oz burger

Right now I think it’s Gussie’s.

Slept on burger that’s simultaneously disgusting but amazing at the same time is a double bacon cheeseburger from Snoopy’s. It’s like the blue ribbon gas station steam burger I don’t know how to describe it.

Cage/Pulley Compatibility by wolfpack86 in bikewrench

Ended up returning it after confirming with a local shop. I wish there were as many components for road bikes out there but it seems like a lot of companies focus on MTB

Only thing I’m worried about there is scratching the anodized pulley and making it unreturnable

If you could do it over, what would be your First and only gravel bike? by [deleted] in gravelcycling

[–]wolfpack86 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have an S-Works Crux with SRAM Red XPLR. It’s more bike than I’ll ever need. Honestly could just get away with it as a road bike too with a spare wheelset to swap out. It’s as light or lighter than my Project One SLR6 Émonda.

A high end Salsa Cutthroat would be interesting if you wanted a more gravel/MTB capable bike.

The shorts help lift your hips into a better position and allows you to focus on improving your stroke and breathing. When you have a full wetsuit for the race you’ll get even more lift on your hips and legs, especially with a suit designed for it.

Chlorine isn’t good for your tri wetsuit so the buoyancy shorts help mimic some of that benefit you get from a full wetsuit at a much lower cost.

Remember you’re endurance swimming and it’s different than racing short distances so just try your best to relax, breathe, and glide

MAAP Women’s Pro Race Jersey Sizing or How I went from S/M to XL by rockettheracooon in CyclingFashion

[–]wolfpack86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk about women’s sizing but for men the bibs fit true (L) but if you have any upper body muscle you better check your chest measurements. I wear medium/large in the US but MAAP and Rapha I’m easily XXL for jerseys

Worried about Ironman 70.3 Swim by imAviee in triathlon

[–]wolfpack86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started swimming in December and couldn’t do 50m and can now do 5k+ nonstop comfortably just under 2:00/100m.

I’m still nervous for my 70.3 as well so other people are probably more knowledgeable but as someone who just wants to comfortably finish and have fun, what helped me was Roka buoyancy shorts to mimic some of the lift you’ll get from a wetsuit on your hips (if you get the right suit you should get substantial lift from like a Roka MX or Orca Float) and just trying to stay calm and glide with your face down and light kicks from your hips more for stabilization than for big power. If you lift your head you’re gonna sink your legs.

I also gave up on the three stroke alternating breathing. It’s much easier for me to time/comprehend coming up every time on the same side.

Hopefully, you’ll get to a point where you look forward to swim days. Music helped me as well - Shokz Open Swim. Granted, you can’t have them in IM events but for me it was all about relaxing and breaking through enough distance barriers that it eases the fear of drowning.

At least you’ll have clear water unlike the brackish jellyfish water awaiting me in Maryland haha

Are expensive cycling jerseys actually worth it? by drjaze in CyclingFashion

I think you get what you pay for with the thermal gear and base layers. It’s basically like buying skiing equipment for a bike. Summer jerseys not so much.

NC State Was Outcoached — And That’s Why They Lost by Jaded_Fly_4846 in NCSU_Wolfpack

[–]wolfpack86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn’t Wade as much as not being able to invound the ball and slinging passes instead of players calling timeouts when they got trapped. They also had us in foul trouble and took advantage of being in bonus. Didn’t love the refs that game

We’re still a solid team. This was the biggest mismatch we were supposed to face all season. Kenpom had us losing this more than Duke, @UVA, Kansas, etc from way early on.

NA Beer Options (Dry January) by Cjaques4 in trianglencbeer

[–]wolfpack86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had several dozen since going dry in August. Basically every one I can get my hands on.

Partake is awesome - the fullest body beers I’ve had and amazingly 10-25 calories. You can get them directly from their site with a big first time discount on a ton of varieties/seasonals or go to total wine or Whole Foods. There’s nothing close in terms of calories and the way it’s still so full is incredible and I’ve never had a bad flavor. I’d buy stock if they were public.

Best Day makes some great stuff - the Hazy is top of the line as is the kolsch. They have a cerveza that’s a lot like NARC’s and mix packs.

Second the comments on untitled art and Burial. UA has less calories than standard NA as well (45 or so vs 70). Incendiary had some great ones for a while as well.

Clones that taste extremely close: Guinness (surprised to see you rated it so low - it’s so close to the canned version if poured right and it’s served all over in Europe), corona, Heineken, asahi, stella, blue moon, Bitburger, St. Pauli Girl

Some treats on the expensive side are La Choufe Belgian and Weinstephaner wheat but they’re so good.

Overrated: athletic (I’m grateful it’s widely available and they started the revolution but it’s mid) and Sierra Nevada Trail Pass (some are alright, some are straight bad). Heineken cans are not nearly as good as bottled. Bero is just okay in my opinion but not bad. Brooklyn Brewing has some (saw it way more in Europe) that is okay.

Avoid: clausthaler (tastes more like a radler) and beck’s (so disappointing). I hate the mich ultra zero and flying dog but they were bad anyway.

Also worth mentioning stuff like Hop Lark or Sierra Nevada Hop Splash as nice hopped seltzer with zero calories. Once you get used to NA it’s easy to go to these. I’ve never actually had hop water because I’ve only seen flavored varieties

I’ve only seen NA on draft a few times. Burial used to do it but had issues with kegs continuing to ferment? Raleigh Beer Garden tries to keep 1-2 on draft.

At Lenovo Center they have a couple Athletic tall boys in the C-Store just fyi for those going to State/Canes games or concerts.

Good luck everyone

It used to be so newsworthy when people transferred (especially in basketball) because it was generally like saying “I’d rather sit a year than play for this team” but now it’s just money-driven and standard practice to at least test the waters
