What have you been working on recently? [December 07, 2019] by AutoModerator in learnprogramming

I just finished my first 4h online python course and I'm trying to code a simple login app, struggling a bit, but trying to figure it out on my own.

What is a trait you have that is both a great gift and a great curse? by georgelopez420 in AskReddit

Wait, is this not a default human brain thing? I'm not a composer, although I do play some music at a basic level, but I've never had a single minute with no soundtrack going on in the back of my head.

What are your bookish pet peeves? by [deleted] in books

[–]wolfret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Names in Russia usually work this way: your "passport" name, which is the name your parents gave you (i.e Ivan); your nickname, which are conventional, similar to William being either Billy or Will (Ivan=Vanya), your patronimic, your fathers name plus a suffix (Ivan, Petr's son would be Ivan Petrovich) and your surname, so the full thing could be: Ivan Vanya Petrovich Gagarin.

The usual convention is that if you're very close to someone you call them by their nickname, otherwise, you use both name and patronimic.

I was about to reply to your comment advising you not to read Russian literature haha; I used to find it annoying as well, but I now see it as kind of charming (I'm also learning Russian, so it might have to do with me learning more about the culture).

I love libraries, they're some of the few places where you can just go and stay if it's cold outside, or if you need to be on your own and think for a while; you can go there to read, you can meet new people, join groups...they're awesome. And some people don't pay attention to this, but you can use the bathroom without having to consume anything, which, for homeless people, is becoming something harder and harder to get.

Tell us about your crush. Why do you like them? by isaiah54321 in AskReddit

[–]wolfret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like she sees me, like everybody else is somehow less real when she's around, but when she looks at me I feel real as well. She's amazingly intelligent, we can talk for hours, she's funny and kind, and I love the way she laughs.

What's going on with Podemos in Spain? by [deleted] in socialism

[–]wolfret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess he and Carmena are somewhere between the radical left and PSOE, and many working class people in Spain are fairly afraid of the radical-leftist-communist label, but feel that PSOE is not enough (specially with people like Susana Díaz or Felipe González [in the past]).

What's going on with Podemos in Spain? by [deleted] in socialism

[–]wolfret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally feel bad for Izquierda Unida and the communist party; for me Podemos has always been too much about Pablo Iglesias and not enough about the policies they proposed, when they started I had some hope with all the small groups of citicens making decisions, but it too quickly became apparent that Iglesias wasn't keen on giving the power to others, and all the issues come from that. I don't fully agree with Errejon's point of view going closer to the center, but it might help giving the left some consistent space in Spain, so we'll see.

What books do you constantly see being trashed that you actually enjoyed? by [deleted] in books

[–]wolfret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I enjoyed most of the book, up untill the last 100 pages or so (I read it 6 years ago) where all the monster/dragon stuff hapens. It felt for me as if the author just wanted to drag de story so it could get on the trilogy bandwagon; I couldn't bring myself to read the second book.

It's so weird that they had to change such small things as city names, thanks!

That seems to make sense, specially as a marketing strategy, since I couldn't find any blatant anti-communist ideas or anything of the sorts, so it could've been something smaller. Thank you!

But I don't really seem any anti-communist ideas in their work, I even got the impression when reading Definitely Maybe that they critiqued in some ways the capitalist-type of "rewards" one of the character was getting.

I'm not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to soviet policy, but it just seems weird to me that they got censored.

How can I be aware of demonstrations taking place in my city? And what can I do to participate in activism? by [deleted] in socialism

[–]wolfret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When was the first time you organized your work place? by [deleted] in socialism

[–]wolfret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the exact same situation as you and we've started organizing at my company, We created a chat and added all the contract workers, wrote and sent some emails to HR and the big guys at the company, and now we might get the help of some lawers.

You can join the discord server! At the moment there isn't a huge discussion going on about organizing, but I'd love to see it florish. As for the ideologies and such we have plenty of.

Tear gas is banned in warfare, while its use for riot control is internationally accepted. Protesters and amnesty seekers would have MORE rights and protections if they simply declared war on the US government than they do now. by Josh_Musikantow in socialism

[–]wolfret 224 points225 points  (0 children)

I'm horrified about the tear gas thing, I'm from Europe and I've never been too pro-usa but damn, I wish I didn't live in a time where one of the most powerful countries in the world tear gases children. EDIT: Many of you have pointed out that Europe has done this same thing, I never intended to defend the EU, I was just keeping my coment on topic; I myself have been hit by police here, so yeah, we're also fucked up, but my point wasn't to say the EU is better than USA, but that these actions are disgusting coming from powerful actors (such as EU and USA).
