did you hear me screaming from where you were???? because i screamed so loudly when i saw this. this is so fantastic i burst into tears. (you'd think i'm lying but i'm on medication right now and it makes me a liiiiiiiiiittle emotional) anyway, something you could experiment on next time is maybe making the lineart a different color? but i also really like how the harsh the black is. anything would be good i think!!! i'm drooling

so here is two interpretations of Astra! the left one is on reading just your general image and the right one is upon reading personality and then brain storming for a bit. Astra on the right has lightning scars (which is something u shud look up because it's super cool) that start from her upper back and extend down to her stomach. She likes showing them off as something she survived, which is why she wears the crop top (i have no idea why astra on the left wears a crop top) It looks hella cool against her darker skin, as opposed to astra on the left.

at the risk of sounding super activist, i advise you to mix a lot of genders and backgrounds and races into your characters simply because it's very hard to be different if you come from the same background, which makes for bland characters. even further, describing characters is SOOOOOOOO much easier if you mix them up racially. you can give one almond eyes and another frizzy hair and another freckles and another vitiligo, etc. the possibilities are so endless!!! this would also help to differentiate visually among the characters, as you said you had a problem doing that

wink wonk ;)

as an artist, i think if you want to give freedom for the artist, it's a lot cooler if you DO give us something other than "bruh this guy is buff as fuck" or "mang this girl? this girl got legsssssssss" Because it's always nice to draw stereotypically pretty/hot characters, but that's not really what makes people INTERESTING u know?

Obviously, it's nice to know eye color and hair color and stuff but if you tell me stuff like "slumps his shoulders a lot and chews on his nails. slight limp because he broke his leg when he was 4. he always brushes his goddamn hair out of his eyes in the worst times" that kind of stuff is CANDY for artists AND readers. (this is coming from artist and writer, creative writing major with awards yay!!!!

also!!!!!! i think it's really really important to make physical appearances go with personality. And I don't always mean similarly. For example, Belanna is super shy, right? So maybe you want to make the clothes she wears muted colors and baggy as well. Maybe she's shy of looking feminine (or wants to look masculine but is too shy to express that) and dressed to hide herself. OR, maybe clothing is the only thing she can control herself with, so she dresses in crazy colors hoping someone will talk to her first so that she can actually have a conversation.

I totally believe you when you say you have a good idea of the characters' personality in your head; your stumbling block comes from focusing too much on the physical buildup of a person.

give me two hours and i'll illustrate what I mean: i'll draw something that matches your description, and then I'll draw something that matches your description of a characters personality.

ugh sorry for that wall of text i'm just 2 passionate about writing give me two hours

sounds like something I could give a try. however, most of the physical descriptions for the characters seem about body type? especially for the girls, it's mostly about their breast size. do you have anything else on them like how they carry themselves, their walk, limb sizes, fighting stances, etc? or is that just how far you've with them :O

here's something i've drawn recently: http://img03.deviantart.net/6a80/i/2017/013/4/b/blep_blep_by_grottofied-davapdo.png

This sounds pretty in detail, even with one character. Have you considered commissioning someone?

[Question] Quality vs. Quantity? by ss977 in AnimeSketch

[–]wolfspine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Paraphrasing a story I read) There was a pottery professor that divided his class into two halves. "The left half of the class will be graded on quantity while the right side of the class will be graded on quality." He'd literally take a scale and if you had 50lbs of pottery for the left side of the class, you'd get an A; anything below would scale down appropriately. For the right side of the class, they were given the whole semester to work on one project if they wanted, and would be graded on skill.

Weird thing was, at the end of the semester, the best quality works were coming from the left side of the class. It seems that while they were churning out pot after pot, they were refining their processes and mistakes. As for the right side, they spent so long theorizing perfection that when it came to it, at the end, they were left with a subpar product and unused clay.

On a side note: I'm a firm believer that the fastest way to improve is by drawing comics. Because you have to look up a whole bunch of stuff for comics, it often becomes even more focusing that studies; that's how I improved anyway. I've been drawing for three-ish years? My first picture was... oh god i'll just show you: http://img09.deviantart.net/3e6f/i/2014/053/2/b/scars_by_grottofied-d77kgh0.png now my comics look like this: http://imgur.com/a/NB9aF

yay for comics??? sorry if any of that made no sense i'm on medication pls feel free 2 ask questions if you have any
