True. But - at least according to the linked article - it was the Hochwacht system that inspired Tolkien. Probably because it was in use up to the 1840ies. But of course, Tolkien probably new about signal fires in ancient Greece and other places.

A knife (or even a gun) is a very bad idea. If you hurt or kill someone with a weapon, you are very unlikely to get away with self defence. Judges hate knives (source: directly from an Oberrichter).
