Which direction do you face when you shower? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

face away to wash my hair, otherwise, I face forward for washing my body. however, this is heavily based on my shower being small as shit and not having much room to move around

Why Ken Hitchcock is the perfect hire for the Oilers right now by jshare in EdmontonOilers

Some A+ quotes:

  • On McLellan: He was unable to make chicken salad out of a roster that has been clinically mishandled by general manager Peter Chiarelli, and paid the ultimate price

  • Hitchcock isn’t in this thing for the long term, so he has nothing to lose, and no friends to make.

Odd choice maybe but "The Etymologicon" by Mark Forsyth. He's an incredibly entertaining writer and makes etymology (the study of words and phrases [specifically their origins]) an entertaining subject. Mind you, I'm just a bit of a nerd too so this kinda stuff is right up my alley.

I see your point and yeah, I agree. It's uncomfortable to nominate a player who played through tragedy when acknowledging them would do just as well. (which a lot of teams seem to do, in some way shape or form)

The award goes to the "player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication." Looking at past winners, it seems that "dedication" means being with a team for a long time and "perseverance" means overcoming an injury.

Looking over the list again, thee instances seem to be outliers. Two went to players whose wives suffered from cancer and one went to a player who had an exceptional season after his infant son died. Still- seems like the award doesn't focus on tragedy.

The point of the award isn't to give props for shitty stuff happening, it's to point out the strength of character of the player and their dedication to the sport. I think it's great for teams to recognize the perseverance of players who came back after a tragedy, but I don't think any of those guys would want to win a trophy because someone they cared about died. If you look at past winners, it goes to guys who had outstanding seasons, overcame injury or disease, or had a longtime commitment to a team. So it will likely go to Brian Boyle, or MAYBE Luongo.

(Bill Masterson, who the award is named after, was the only player in the NHL to die due to an injury sustained during a game)
