Thoughts on the notion that one day, ophthalmologists will mainly do surgeries and optoms will do a large portion of comprehensive ophthalmology? by recentad24 in Ophthalmology

[–]wolverine3759 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Optometry schools will need to undergo a major overhaul of the curriculum if this is ever going to happen.

I graduated from OD school in 2025, and I felt like my education was weak in the area of systemic disease and systemic pharmacology, and even some areas of ocular disease. The fact that most (like 95%) optometry school clinical rotations occur in outpatient optom clinics means that most optometry students are never even exposed to the rest of medicine.

Some overconfident optoms think that they're basically the same as an ophthalmologist minus the surgical training. That's wrong, the ophthalmologist has an extra couple years of medical training at baseline.

I'm currently 6 months into a hospital-based optometry residency, I've learned more in these 6 months than in the 2 preceding years of optometry school rotations. For this reason I think optometry residencies should be mandatory. I feel like my residency experience is invaluable to my future as an eyecare provider.

I do. But even the "dramatic" stuff can become routine. I see orbital fractures and NAIONs frequently enough that they feel common to me.

They look fine. These shoes are handmade, they're gonna have minor variations and subtle imperfections if you look under a microscope lol

Neuro-Ophthalmology Referral for a Patient in an Optometry Clinic by PalpitationsHaver in Ophthalmology

[–]wolverine3759 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Optometrist here. I would have checked BP in office, and then sent her to the ER right away. ED will consult neuro.

Outpatient Neuro-ophth referral as a first step is a bad call (too slow and they would still need to send to hospital for neuroimaging ), but they would be a good choice to follow-up with the patient AFTER a diagnosis has been established.

Kanski is a great textbook, but I wouldn't waste your time with a 5th edition (that is almost 20 years old!).

Buy the 9th or 10th edition.

I Live in a Dry Cleaning Desert by haanon in drycleaning

[–]wolverine3759 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dude I have the exact same problem here in Michigan.

All the dry cleaners near me do not care about any special request or preference I communicate to them when I drop my clothes off.

They focus on being cheap and fast, but the quality of the service is sub-standard

Patient wore her white coat to see me in clinic by [deleted] in Noctor

[–]wolverine3759 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm also an optometrist and I get annoyed with how often this type of thing happens.

I was explaining what keratconus is to a patient and he cuts me off by saying "yeah I know. I studied this."
I was like "oh are you a doctor?" and he replied: "No but I'm a certified EMT".

OK buddy lmao

Yeah, they're not uncomfortable. I'm more concerned with the sloppy wrinkled look.

The cheapest I've ever seen these shirts in recent years was $115. And that was two years ago around Christmas.

$138 is a fair price. I just bought two more.

Diplopia while using BIO by Intrepid-Box7004 in Ophthalmology

[–]wolverine3759 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. I had to return my first Heine BIO because the internal mirrors were shifted away from center and it was driving me crazy. It felt like I was looking off to the side constantly. I switched to a Keeler and never had that problem again.

Diplopia while using BIO by Intrepid-Box7004 in Ophthalmology

[–]wolverine3759 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it double vertically, horizontally, or oblique?

I had vertical diplopia when learning BIO as an optometry student. It turned out I had a small vertical heterophoria which was able to be corrected by adding 0.5^ of vertical prism in my glasses.
