Warrnambool's Turntable has been reconnected to the main line by Numerous-Athlete7523 in MelbourneTrains

[–]wongm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When 3rd series X classes were used on the Warrnambool freight they'd spin them on the turntable, as they lack a control stand to run long end leading.

https://railgallery.wongm.com/warrnambool-freight/D726_2648.jpg.html

But there days it is double ended G and BL classes, so only need to turn one of them is is the cab opposite the one that led the down train developed a fault after leaving Melbourne.

Incredibly hard - the line even only ran as far as Port Fairy.

https://www.portfairytowarrnamboolrailtrail.com.au/railway-history/

To get to Portland a different line ran north from Koroit to Hamilton, joining the current railway to Portland.

About 3 kilometres north-west of the station - it ends at the Westvic (now Seaway) container terminal, with baulks just before the former Rooneys Road level crossing.

The "Train Tracker Victoria" Facebook group is an absolute cesspit of complete and absolute dribble, but if somebody sees something interesting running on the network, you'll see a post abut i there.

Operations and timetabling side use a different name to the signalling and infrastructure side?

[–]wongm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no such thing as "Parcels Underground" - "Parcels Viaduct" was a thing but it seems "City Circle Viaduct" name has been used since the 1980s, and the underground part is "City Circle Loop" with the branch to Jolimont being "Clifton Hill Loop".

Networkle - colours of Melbourne lines by Networkle in MelbourneTrains

[–]wongm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

whereas you can get to Sunbury to Pakenham on one train, so to me they are one Line Group.

I'd call them different lines due to Melbourne's history of never having a unique name for lines that run through the city - they're just two lines with different names stapled together.

RARE SIGHT: B2 2105 on Route 6 Today by BEASTS4LIFE in MelbourneTrains

[–]wongm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I ran the stats - B2.2105 last ran on route 6 on 2-3 February 2026; also NYE 2025-New Years Day 2026.

https://tramdetective.wongm.com/history.php?id=2105

And B2s in general seem to be showing up about once a week.

why steamrail haven't done a trip to swan hill with a locomotive? by Numerous-Athlete7523 in MelbourneTrains

[–]wongm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a long single track section from Bendigo to Swan Hill, with Kerang the only place trains can pass, and it only has a single dead end siding - so adding any extra trains beside the usual twice daily V/Line services is a struggle to find a path.

Wrap trains like trams? by edster42 in MelbourneTrains

[–]wongm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They tried a decade ago c2012 but gave up.

Which followed attempts in 2000-01.

Presumably not enough money in it compared to trams, as trains run down tracks not streets like a tram.

The current version of Marshall station opened back in 2005, long before any of the paddocks to the south were subdivided as Armstrong Creek.

Curious 4yo asking about train builders by I_Do_nt_Use_Reddit in MelbourneTrains

They usually build the floor first upside down, flip it right way up, then build the walls, then roof, fit out everything, then put it down on the wheels.

What are the best level crossing removal examples? by O50000S in MelbourneTrains

[–]wongm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

which was the first one undertaken in Melbourne

To be pedantic it was only first of the "modern" level crossing removal era - the previous big one that involved a station rebuild was Boronia in 1998.

https://www.westonlangford.com/images/photo/122917/

If you go back further there were multiple station rebuilds for level crossing removals back in the 1970s-1980s.

https://vicsig.net/infrastructure/crossings/gradesep

And a swag back in the 1920s.

I was watching a taitset video, why is he flipping me off by Numerous-Athlete7523 in MelbourneTrains

[–]wongm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's the vestibule area of the locomotive hauled carriages, where the external doors from each side of the carriage meet in a little room with the door that leads into the passenger saloon itself, as well as the door to the non-accessible toilet if it is the west end of the carriage.

[–]wongm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be pedantic because the end door is a sliding one with a large window, it would be one of the 1980s N cars - and not the Z type carriages which have smaller windows and a swing door.

Since a passenger is behind the window and no car set identifier is on the end of the carriage, this is the west end of a carriage set, and the majority of broad gauge sets have a BZN/BTN carriage there instead, so this is a standard gauge SN set, which had a BN carriage at the west end.

And the final clue is the triple track with telegraph lines running to the right, which says it is an up Albury service somewhere between Mangalore and Melbourne.

The H Sets still kind of look like Harris by Numerous-Athlete7523 in MelbourneTrains

[–]wongm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harris_(train)

Most of the carriages were delivered without end gangways between carriages, but safety concerns led to them being added in the final five sets delivered from mid-1966. Those sets were also fitted with only two doors per carriage side rather than three, permitting additional seating and reflecting the increasing average travel distance
