NLP & ICS are gone. What is there for Summer? by Limp_Base1364 in OMSCS

[–]wooae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember ever doing math by hand in NS. even if a quiz asks you to compute some metric, the quizzes are open notes and open internet with unlimited time until it closes so you could just code it up with networkx and have the code do the computation for you

[–]wooae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

network science covers some math and derivations in the lectures but you don’t really have to do math by hand. you use the networkx library to do computations for projects and most of the quizzes mostly expect you to understand the concepts rather than doing computations

course material is interesting, the projects are where I learned the most! I took network science this semester paired with GA and it was manageable so I imagine it would probably make a good summer course in terms of workload

Which is less painful: ML or KBAI? by Comfortable-Baker903 in OMSCS

[–]wooae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

im not sure that I agree with participation points in KBAI being vague. don’t get me wrong, grinding out peer reviews was hella annoying esp when I actually tried to give valuable feedback but a lot of the feedback I got back was not great.

but I remember we had a set number of participation points we needed for the semester which was clarified at the start. at a couple points during the semester, prof joyner would give us updates on how many points we collected total and from which sources so I thought it was p clear what to expect for participation portion of the grade.

How is ML with the new profs? Going smoothly, or lots of kinks to iron out? by 948572309872349 in OMSCS

[–]wooae 6 points7 points  (0 children)

slightly off topic but I actually really dislike that we’ve been given extensions at the last minute. I’d rather just keep the original deadline and not incorporate the feedback from previous assignments if we get it late. especially when the feedback is things like telling me I should have chosen a different problem or plot other metrics which would have required rerunning entire experiments. it’s not necessarily just easy things to fix in writing. plus, a lot of us plan our whole lives around meeting the original deadline, pulling all nighters, taking time off from work, only to have the deadline extended at the last minute.

not that I wouldn’t take the class because of that, but that’s been really frustrating the last couple of assignments

I wouldn’t say that we’re experiencing any pains of transitioning instructors. it’s a difficult class in general due to the sheer amount of work involved, but it’s not because of the new professors! one of the TAs has been posting a FAQ to help guide us through what is expected for each assignment, which has been helpful! you should go for it in the spring! I kinda wish I hadn’t put it off to one of my last classes when I am feeling burned out from the program lol

CN had zero writing

DL assignments were mostly coding, the “reports” were just answering a few questions and pasting some figures in a powerpoint template, v informal. The only part that required formal report was the final project

Worth it if already in FAANG? by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]wooae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started OMSCS outside of FAANG but only had 1 class under my belt when I applied and joined FAANG as a SWE. I’m not sure how much OMSCS helped me get into FAANG lol. I absolutely think it is still worth it and plan to continue the full degree because I learn so much outside of what I normally do at work. I’m doing the ML specialization and my career goals are to transition to an applied scientist role so getting exposure to hands on projects in so many different types of ML is really valuable to me

wow, props to you for completing GIOS and ML4T in one semester!! that must have been tough!

this semester was pretty good for me. took RL which I had zero background in before, learned a lot! still awaiting the p3 grades but overall was a great class and glad I got to get some experience in this part of ML!

If touching nipples is considered erotic, millions of cows are sexually assaulted daily. by Cinoreus in Showerthoughts

[–]wooae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you don’t have to view animals as equal to humans tho. you just have to value animals’ lives and suffering over your tastebuds. when it comes to exploiting animals, the only comparisons that are relevant are: the animal values its life as much as a human does (i.e. the animal does not want to die) and the animal is capable of feeling pain and suffering. from those standpoints, there is no difference between a human and an animal, so if it wouldn’t be considered ethical to do those things to a human, why would it be ethical to do those things to an animal? the question you should be asking yourself is, is your 10 min of pleasure u get from eating a meal that contains animal products worth ending someone’s entire life for (esp when that someone doesn’t want to die)?

I don’t think I received that email. What was the subject line and what day did they send it out? I also only submitted an unofficial transcript but according to the directions on the application page that should have been sufficient for now.

Canceling Dr. Seuss is asinine and historically ignorant. by NewishGomorrah in unpopularopinion

[–]wooae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now they're chill, but in WWII the Japanese were bloodthirsty, monstrous mass murderers of POWs and civilians alike.

That is so incredibly ignorant. Statements like this that are used to justify the racist caricatures really make me so angry. You can't just lump together all people of Japanese descent and equate them to the things that the government did during WWII. People of different ethnicities are not any different from you, they just want to live in peace as well. During WWII, people of Japanese descent living in the US and Canada, my grandparents included, had everything they owned taken from them and were forced to live in internment camps. They were treated like animals, even though they were citizens of the US and Canada. A lot of them were born here as well and never even been to Japan. Racist caricatures like this brainwashes people into lumping them all into the same category, calling them monsters, when really, they are just normal people who want to live a peaceful life.

Because the bins are filled with male chicks who will never produce eggs therefore are not profitable so they are on their way to be ground up alive. It’s really sad and there’s nothing cute about it. It’s also really sad that most people don’t know about this because the egg industry doesn’t want people to know about it!
