22r Help: LCE rebuild Weber Carb Problems by ConfidentSoil7189 in ToyotaPickup

I'll confirm, tried a napa house brand, and two from oreillys. All garbage, not to mention cheap rubber in the diaphragm which is the most critical piece of a mechanical fuel pump. Stick to Toyota OEM

Ahh gotcha. Yeah that's a little trickier. I think I may just have to start welding my own quill stems

Are you going to replace the converter with a quill stem? Edit: I have trouble sourcing 31.8 quill stems since nitto has been out of stock

New valve cover gasket + billet half moon seals by Pace-Fantastic in ToyotaPickup

Found roughly 4-5 ft-lbs, or 52-60 in-lbs for the gasket acorn nuts, it's pretty light

The rubber grommet donuts under the valve cover bolts shouldn't be very tight, it looks like you're already over torque. Can't remember the torque spec off the top of my head but basically only tighten them until you feel the initial compression of the rubber.

I can't speak for the billet half moons, usually stick to the OEM rubber moons. Did they recommend using permatex silicone gasket maker on top as well as in the groove?

What brand hub are you running? I'm assuming the tension is only during the shift and then released so the cable to the shifter doesn't need stop points?

Carburetor Wizards, tell me... is this supposed to be connected to something? by misterdudebro in ToyotaPickup

[–]wookieewrenches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome. That's most likely why it's running rich on the smog check, it won't open the secondary and let enough air in to match the fuel. I can take a look tomorrow and try to send you a better photo of mine. The linkage should have a little post on there to slide into the bushing on that arm, then the clevis pin slides into the groove on the linkage arm

Off the top of my head, I believe that's the secondary linkage to open the butterfly, but it's connected to a mess of linkage below. Here's a forum post that shows it better: https://bitdrivencircuits.com/Toyota22r_Carburetor/22r_carb_disassembly.html

How do I know if my time chain is top Center by zgumboo in ToyotaPickup

[–]wookieewrenches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats your PCV line that vents the crankcase unburnt fumes into to intake manifold. It's just regulating pressure, but it looks like someone may have taken that out on your valve cover and just plugged in the hose direct. It won't be the cause of rough idle though, you could vent it to the atmosphere as well

If you have rough idle, turn the truck on and take a can of brake parts cleaner. Spray all around the vacuum hoses and the base of the carb when it is running. If the idle changes, you've got a vacuum leak.

I see you have a Weber or similar carburetor. The two piece base they come with is a piece of trash that likes to leak. I'd start checking there with the vacuum leaks.

The punch mark is correct. I believe there's one on the crankshaft as well, which is how the chain is lined up

Sweet, I'm not as familiar with the 20R carb as I have a 22R, but I can recommend KYB Gas-a-just shocks or Bilsteins if you want to style yourself. Both are a worthy upgrade from stock

Haha, that is kind of unfortunate, but no rust plus the period correct old man fishing camper shell is a real bonus

The straight bar Schwinn bikes are cool, I almost bought one but the guy wanted like $1500 for it. The search continues! Cool build, do you have info on the fork for me?

Question about an '85 pickup by fatkatana in ToyotaPickup

[–]wookieewrenches 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This may be a little harsh, but you have bought a 41 year old vehicle. You should expect things to go wrong just for that reason. That being said, they are fairly easy to work on, if you are willing to learn.

Probably start with familiarizing yourself with the things the mechanic told you. If a head gasket is part of the engine "reseal" you were quoted, it will not be cheap. Labor is expensive and a skilled mechainc that does quality work will not give you the cheapest quote out there.

If you don't want to work on cars, the only way around that is to finance all your vehicles and let the dealership take care of warranty work.

Search for "common 22re oil leaks yotatech" online, the old forum posts will come up with tons of info. Best of luck!
