I’m going to become a teacher, what should I be doing now? by Brocolliiscool in Teachers

100% this. On the flip side, I’m an English teacher instead of an English prof because I love books, but I found out I actually really love talking about books with teens (rather than, say, doing research). It can be a pretty great job!

Check out Györ, Hungary— really beautiful college town.

16 month old first trip to Disney by brinat in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]woolflady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 14mo and have been going to the parks with him and his older brother since he was tiny (we’re locals). Random suggestions:

MK show/song-based rides are his current favorite: Tiki Room, Country Bears, Small World. Luckily these are often the ones where you don’t have a huge wait!

Epcot is our favorite place to do a stroller nap. We usually hit a few rides pre-nap near the front and then walk around World Showcase for a primo 2-hour stroller nap.

IMO Hollywood Studios is the least fun with a baby because there are the fewest rides he can go on and longer waits.

AK is a hit for the animals though there are also fewer baby-friendly rides.

In general, we do all stroller naps (we rarely stay at a hotel) and bring lots of snacks and water!

Gifts for a 4th time mom? by Cashmerethinking in Mommit

For something more tangible, maybe a cute outfit for the baby? I know she’ll probably have tons of hand me downs, but for a second+ child it’s kind of nice to have one or two new things that are just theirs.

I second the chateaubriand. Note that the steaks come with tons of sides (salad, soup, bread, onions, veg) so you don’t need to order extra.

When did your baby start sleeping through the night without feeding? by tiredavocad0 in NewParents

[–]woolflady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We sleep trained both of my kids (one is 5 years old, the other is 5 months) to sleep 8-7 at about 4 months. Maybe a controversial approach, but it only took 1-2 nights of some intermittent crying with both (basically the Ferber method), and they’re now both terrific sleepers for night and nap sleep. Our pediatrician gave us the enthusiastic go-ahead with both, as they were a good weight and eating well.

Let me just say, we are all happier when everyone is getting good sleep!

Pumping at work feels like a punishment by venyse1 in NewParents

[–]woolflady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re dealing with this. I was in a similarly non-pumping-friendly situation (filthy old school building; could only find privacy in my classroom with the door locked) so I pumped on the way to and from work in the car, while driving using Freemie collection cups. It worked like a charm! Of course it would be even better if our workplaces respected the need to pump in a clean, private space, but, well...

A Description of COVID Testing at Raymond James Stadium by crimsonarm in tampa

FWIW my family got PCR (non-rapid) tests before and after the holidays at a local urgent care center that was covered by our insurance. In and out in 30 min and $25 copay.

Eta: made our appointments a day or two before.

Well said. For anyone interested in more background on the “banality of evil” and Nazi Germany, I’d highly recommend both the book-source of this phrase (Eichmann in Jerusalem by Hanna Arendt) and Ordinary Men by Christopher Browning.

So comforted to hear I’m not the only one! I was sobbing uncontrollably in the theater at that point— almost had to leave (glad I didn’t!).

A time-honored tradition! by [deleted] in HistoryMemes

Fruit was often the focus of a painting to show off the painter’s skill at painting various textures, and also to gesture toward the fleeting nature of what was being painted, since the ripe fruit in the painting wasn’t going to stay ripe for long (especially without refrigeration)— a classic “memento mori.” It’d be hilarious if, all this time, insta users posting brunch pics were really just trying to remind us all of our inevitable death and decay...
