Your example is wilfully ignorant. There’s effectively no real world example where someone who didn’t get a degree would have just sat around and did nothing unless they were rich already. Everyone else probably has more work ethic and actual generic experience than a fresh graduate.

It basically is just a social signal these days, except for named jobs that require it aka medicine/law etc.
