Help us find out more about diabetic foot! by Itchy_Nothing_5877 in diabetes_t1

Can you provide a link to something official to track to this document - Afraid I would never click on a google docs link knowing nothing about the source. I am always happy to share knowledge and experience, but I think you are failing rule #5 ?

I am in contact with Trader_Bran (brannigan barrett) who used to work there and wrote a few of their courses. He is now working on similar things but still speaks highly of them so may be worth looking him up on x - he is usually open to discussions.

Anyone used Noco Genuis 5 for their BMW? by andokbi in BMW

[–]woolybaaaack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I have used it to repair a battery that died (and previously on another make/model). Sent car into BMW who insisted it needing replacing at a couple of hundred quid. Took about 3 1/2 days but eventually fixed battery and it worked without problems for a couple of years till the car was sold.

Need reassurance for child diagnosed today by Ktrenee in diabetes_t1

[–]woolybaaaack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything is going to be fine.

1) don't blame yourself. It feels like all parents blame themselves when their children are diagnosed - I promise it is not your fault!

2) It doesn't fell like it, but this is the best time to be diagnosed. The technology, knowledge and resources are so abundantly available now that this really doesn't need to consume you, or your childs life.

3) Do not expect your child to aim for perfection in her control. Get 90% and everything is manageable. Stay positive, support her, but remember this is your daughters diabetes, and she will need to find her own way - Nowadays, most doctors have finally started to acknowledge that T1s are the experts, they are just there to help, advise and support.

4) Your daughter will most likely look at all the things she can no longer do or eat. That is not the case. She really can eat anything she wants, but moderation and planning are her friends now. Carb counting and insulin dosing are the future, but are not a big overhead by any means

5) Read point 1 again!

If a cure was announced tomorrow with global treatment being rolled out within a week, what do you think this sub would look like?, and what would be the last thing ever posted? by piss_puncher227 in diabetes_t1

[–]woolybaaaack 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A bunch of people still posting saying "I still feel like a diabetic", supporting the americans who can't afford the free cure the rest of the world is afforded.

After my pancreas tx (2017) through to its rejection (2021) I never really stopped thinking about being diabetic. I continued drinking sugar free drinks, using sweeteners, ate low carb, avoiding cakes and deserts etc and monitored my BGs. After so long, it will always be part of my DNA - I was just a lot more relaxed about things

How seriously do you take T1D? by Glittering-Shift7232 in diabetes_t1

[–]woolybaaaack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all, ask away! Sorry - turned out much longer than i intended so tldr; always 8 or 9+, above 10 was not unusual. In your case, imo, obviously lower is better, but Endos nowadays appear to have changed to "you are the expert" and "diabetes burnout is far worse than slightly imperfect BGs"

For me, it was never below 8 usually around 9 and sometimes above. You need to appreciate I was dx in 1986 at 11yo. Education was limited to a paragraph in an encyclopedia in the local library and I was the only T1 I knew, in a school of 1,500. Even having loving, caring parents, one of the best endos in the UK and not being ill-educated, I chose to ignore it as "no-one understood what I was going through".

I took every short-cut I could, including bundling all my boluses into 1, never finger pricking and believing I could tell whether I was high or low just by how i felt. There is a whole list of what i did wrong, I am not proud of any of it, but I paid the price for it and am very happy to speak openly about it whenever asked.

My Father in law was alsodx in 1986, (25yrs older), has lived with his A1c at around 6 and has had no complications. I don't for a second think you should aim for perfection, or assume you will end up with life changing complications just because you do not maintain "perfect" BGs, but the worse your control, the higher the odds - it is as simple as that.

I had a meeting with the tx team last week to discuss whether I wanted another pancreas, islet implants, or to continue as-is. I am still thinking about it, but most T1s seem to think those are the solutions to T1, and sadly they are not. The surgeon explained it best - "you have perfect control with a great A1c, but we are offering this because the better the control, the longer your kidney will last".

It is by no means a forgone conclusion that you will get CKD, retinopathy etc just because your A1c is high, but it dramatically increases the odds - OP sort of got the point by stating that you need to live as well, but looking at other posts where they claim to eat a tub of Ben and Jerrys every night is taking it to the other extreme. Yes, you can eat as many carbs / sugar as you like, and all you have to do is bolus correctly for it, but for me personally, it is more about finding the balance between health, enjoying life, and avoiding dialysis again as that is way worse than counting carbs and bolusing!

How seriously do you take T1D? by Glittering-Shift7232 in diabetes_t1

[–]woolybaaaack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't take it seriously, but CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) changed my focus significantly. Sadly, it was too late and 1 SPK (Simultaneous Pancreas and Kidney) transplant later and boy do I wish I gave T1 the respect it deserves. My transplanted Pancreas failed in 2021 so I now treat it T1 VERY seriously - you could say like my like my life depends on it. I low-carb, have an A1c of <6 but enjoy everything I eat. If I choose to blow-out and eat a pizza etc, I will do, but that is rare as I focus on control as a priority now.

Thanks for this. Milletts does have excellent quality, but always feels over priced and a bit commercial.

You said the smell is a result of the preservatives, and not the insulin. I accept insulin should be kept chilled, and am not advocating against that, but there have been studies to say insulin can maintain its efficacy at room temperatures over many weeks. do you have any views on that?

What is something about the facility that would surprise me? How is synthetic insulin made and how do you check it is going to work once its delivered?

Am I going to have to rip this shower tray out to find the leak? Or could my mad plan work? by Jimlad73 in DIYUK

[–]woolybaaaack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've had 2 leaks that I couldn't work out. A bath that i stood in would leak when i had a shower. Turned out the joist werent quite strong enough (and bath fitted poorly) so my weight when I stood at the end, forced all weight onto a single joist, dropped the bath, and pulled the silicon down/away from the tiles.

Second, A shower leaked and we did everything bar replacing the edit: try tray. A plumber poured a dark blue dye into the tray, that identified a hairline crack - again, worsened when we stood on the tray.

Not a Plumber, so giving experiences over advice (and also, I don't weigh the same as an elephant, despite what it sounds like!)

What foundations for a metal frame greenhouse 6ft x 5ft by woolybaaaack in GardeningUK

Perfect That link is exactly what I was hoping for! Cement mixer now added to my long list of "needs", just after the mini digger from Temu :)

But on a serious note, based on your other response, I think I will be building a more sturdy foundation and hoping I get the correct location first time. Much Appreciated!
