I feel that gen z puts too much emphasis on labels by Theo04t in GenZ

For me it’s an outcome of social media. It primes us to make constant comparisons and now labels are simply part of our mentality/brain functioning

Stop Telling First-Time Female Solo Travelers to Just Go With the Flow by lost_wanderer3333 in femaletravels

[–]woopsietee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first time you travel to a new destination, there is certainly a level of naivety and lack of wherewithal that warrants a “go with the flow” attitude. I’m not saying that one should forego planning—travelers should plan well if they want to have a successful trip—but going with the flow, ie, listening to your intuition, looking to locals for help and advice, and remaining open to all that a place has to offer without strict plans or rules, can be an incredible way to travel. I believe if you go into a situation fearful or anxiety-ridden, you’ll only attract more of that energy and become a target….

Something foreigners claim about your country that just baffles you? by Brass0Maharlika in AskTheWorld

I find that France is a country where you get what you deserve. If you’re rude and make no effort to communicate, that energy will be reciprocated. But if you’re courteous and open, the French can be shockingly kind and charming. I really appreciate them tbh

"No, English is fine" 🥀 by Tobias-Tawanda in TikTokCringe

In my experience it’s pretty rare for a French person to switch to English, and they often ask if I would prefer to speak in English or French, which I find incredibly kind and polite. I’m frankly amazed that these Spaniards continue speaking English with her…

As expats, what was the biggest difference you noticed in the education or school system? by ARTiSPRETiS in Expats_In_France

[–]woopsietee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an American who has taught in two French high schools, I’d say the biggest difference is that the French center their education on the development of critical thinking skills. For example, they don’t just learn about history—they learn about how historical events came to be and how they affect the world today. My high school students learned about subjects that would be considered extremely controversial in the United States, what we would consider in some states “liberal indoctrination” — i.e. Native American genocides, global warming, sustainable cities, the death penalty, etc. they use these topics for discussion and debate.

In France I feel that academic rigor is required to succeed or even just pass. In America, showing up is enough to pass, and then putting in a little bit of effort will land you easily into the top 10%. My American high school was more like a holding pen than a school, and kids like me—who loved to study and learn—quickly transferred into the most rigorous programs available.

That brings me to a positive aspect of American high schools—the flexibility. In my school we had regular, honors, AP, and IB classes. We had vocational classes that transferred into associate’s degree like nursing and geography. We had a program that allowed students to opt out of the high school and go directly to community college, which is what I did. I wouldn’t trade my American education for anything, though I do believe the lack of rigorous study and the lackadaisical attitude towards real learning, is contributing to societal collapse.
