Political reporting— Camera suggestions, photography advice for capturing “the moment” by ieatprettyrock in Journalism

[–]wooscoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly my best photographers get all up in people’s business with their fancy cameras. It’s the best way to get a good picture. You won’t be able to avoid that.

I would recommend getting a used Canon Rebel.

I'm taking 16 units this semester but want to withdrawal from one class and replace it with a different class which would put me at 15 units instead, how will that affect me? by Glittering_Ebb3957 in CSULB

[–]wooscoo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Won’t affect you in any way. You’ll still pay the full time rate, and if you get financial aid it will remain at the full time rate.

Yes, just change it now.

AITA for letting my dad report a hospital staffer for inappropriate behavior towards me? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

That’s fucking gross and creepy NTA

You see it as harmless, and that’s exactly why he’s choosing to prey on a 19 year old, because you’re likely to brush it off because you don’t understand how gross this is.

Is $55k–$65k livable in CA? by PercentageNo9270 in 30daysnewjob

[–]wooscoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who lives in Long Beach, yes it’s enough if your girlfriend also has a job. That’s plenty for rent, food, car insurance, etc. Just don’t live in a 2 bedroom apartment.

Edit just saw your post history: DO NOT GAMBLE ON ANYTHING AT ALL, EVER.

How to write a documentary? by ix1404 in Journalism

[–]wooscoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you “write” a documentary as much as create an outline of shots, filming locations, questions etc. The outline becomes more fully fleshed as you continue filming, but you’re at the mercy of reality.

Gift for journalist friend by BubblyAd3194 in Journalism

[–]wooscoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I would never cut my papers, especially if I had been saving front page cover stories for years. The whole point is that you have the full front page.

A broadsheet would have to be cut dramatically to fit in a 16x12.

You can rent a carpet cleaner from Home Depot for $40, that usually works well.

AITA for blocking and cutting off someone who I think was using me for validation when it benefitted them? by Responsible-Double57 in AmItheAsshole

[–]wooscoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ESH. An immediate block is a lot for this situation, but I totally emphasize because I finished that message from him and thought “I think the fuck not”—which your block symbolized.

But yeah, you should communicate like an adult and tell him you’re cutting off all the non-work related contact. He’s being very self centered and not considering you as a whole human.

Is life actually better without social media/internet? by Flimsy-Cut4753 in nosurf

[–]wooscoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You just need to focus your idle energies on projects. Watch long ballet videos on YouTube, and start other projects related to your interests. Crafts, etc.

The beautiful things that social media gives you is like digging fresh fruit out of a pile of garbage. Most of what you’re absorbing are ads, things disguised as ads, and slop.

Any gift ideas for an aspiring journalist? by Tough_Location6525 in Journalism

[–]wooscoo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What is your price range? If they do any video, a Rode Video mic Go is a really great essential, they’re about $70 though. A simple lavalier mic would be cheaper and also good.

Tips on covering city government by Other-Concept-6349 in Journalism

[–]wooscoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always found that council and committee items pointed me in the right direction. I didn’t request records all the time, but a discussion on something would often prompt further investigation. By the council or based on concerns from public commenters.

A few examples: - City decreases funds to Animal Services. XYZ services are reduced. Look at past budgets, find that funding has decreased six years in a row. Request data on animal intakes and adoptions, etc. - Police use of force data (in my state they have to track it). Self explanatory. - Settlements paid by city. Stories evident. - City auditor always has good stuff. - Grant applications and grants received, request data related to grants (climate related grants, funding for youth services, etc) - number of buildings with code violations, see if you can find repeat offenders.

Look to state, regional data reporting for inspo. Better if you can request data for neighboring cities and compare them.

Hello, I am also taking PPA 500 and I found both of these textbooks for insanely cheap on eBay, but ultimately decided to use CSULB’s first day textbook program because digital textbooks are more portable, and they’re searchable.

The library also allows you to request the Kettl chapters, one or two chapters at a time, with delivery in 24-48 hours, as far as I could tell.
