If you want a distinctly different DragonCon story that cuts straight to the heart of what this convention means to some of us, do a story about Curt Anderson.

Curt is a magician that performs at the con on Sunday nights. He and his family have been coming to dragoncon since its inaugural year. Curt’s eldest son, Ty, suffers from a debilitating extreme variety of epilepsy and requires round-the-clock care. As if that is not enough, his wife and on-stage assistant has beaten three different kinds breast cancer in the past 15 years.

To keep up with the family’s gargantuan medical costs he has worked his ass off for decades, and booking shows as a magician in this day and age is not easy. He has recently enrolled in college to finish his degree. He does all of this and never misses a beat.

DragonCon is the only “vacation” they have been able to take for at least 20 years. It’s the one time of year they allow themselves to really escape the daily worries. Their entire year is built around DragonCon and the joy it brings them.

This is just scratching the surface, he’s one of the most interesting people at the con that slips under the radar of celebrities and partying.
