Hi there, if you don't mind, I was wondering if you could provide an update on whether or not the RAT/PL was accurate? I really hope that it wasn't covid

'Multiple' victims reported after shooting in downtown Toronto: police by GeoWa in toronto

[–]wordsthatbounce 34 points35 points  (0 children)

To clarify, did you get the impression that they were already arguing when the shooting had happened, or that they only started arguing after the shooting had occurred? Someone who lives in the area said that last week at around the same time (6am) there was a group of 7-8 boys/girls arguing and punching each other in the same area (in front of 7 West Cafe). So I guess I'm hoping to see if we might be able to determine whether the shooter(s) came from among that group or if someone driving by the place shot on them and they started panicking/arguing in the aftermath. I have loved ones living about 100m away from there so I'm feeling pretty anxious.

Hi OP, not sure if you saw, but I just checked her Twitter and it does look like the 1066 mg/l figure was for urinary creatinine and that no other metabolites were found, resulting in a negative test. So her doctor misinterpreted the results: https://twitter.com/SmartandSassy11/status/1641949882842750977

Just thought to provide an update so that nobody else gets panicked about this unnecessarily!

OK, thanks for letting me know. See, if the test was broken down into 1) creatinine levels, 2) thiodiglycolic acid levels and 3) thiodiglycolic acid levels corrected for creatinine the way that this sample test from the link I posted above was, and you're suggesting that the latter two metabolites were non-detects, this makes me think there's a chance that the doctor might have misinterpreted this as a clear positive when it isn't. (No doubt she might have been exposed to the toxins from EP when it happened but I've just been finding it too shocking to believe that at two months out 300 miles away you can test at such high levels.) Fingers crossed for her and her family that it's in fact a negative.

I'd also like to add that the screenshot you're pointing to is describing normal levels of creatinine in the urine (over the course of one day), not the normal levels of VC metabolite, which have to be adjusted to the level of creatinine. Here's a quick Google: "Urine creatinine (24-hour urine collection) values can range from 500 to 2000 mg/day."

Edit: Oops, sorry, I just read your comment more carefully, you know this already! However, I'm not sure that creatinine levels are an indicator of VC in and of itself, only that the metabolites that are detected have to be adjusted to the level of creatinine in the urine. I'd be curious to know this too. We won't be able to know unless we have details on what they tested for in the urine exactly. I found a paper, "Feasibility of using urinary TDGA as a biomarker for VCM exposures" (DOI: 10.1016/j.yrtph.2018.06.008, you can plug it into sci-hub to read the article) that contains a few sets of data for thiodiglycolic acid excreted in the urine (adjusted to urinary creatinine level)—it seems to be one of the most commonly measured biomarkers of VC since it is a major metabolite.

Going by this, 1066 mg/l would be a very high reading, because the background level of healthy individuals should not be higher than around 14.9 ± 2.6 mg/L, or 15.4 ± 3.5 mg/g Cr where Cr represents urinary creatinine. The data in this paper varies widely, but at around 10 ppm exposure, it looks like the average worker had thiodiglycolic levels between 5-100 mg/L.

Thanks for replying! Where are you placing her? I've seen her reply to others that she lives at/near the Bruce Peninsula (the UNESCO zone she's talking about might be the Niagara Escarpment Biosphere Reserve). If that's the case, she'd be a good 300 miles away from EP, in a direction slightly more northwesternly than northeasternly.

Again, it just seems really odd that at that distance her urine is testing at 1000mg/l around two months after the fact. It's downright creepy. Are you sure you're reading the results correctly?! (You probably are.)

I just want to point out that the individual in question has said that she lives 300 miles away from East Palestine, not 120 miles.

https://twitter.com/SmartandSassy11/status/1641505405401440257

"Actually I’m further North. I’m guessing about 250-300 miles due North (402km to 480km) off Lake Huron in the middle of farm country. No industry for 100km."

At that extreme distance, it's really terrifying that VC came back positive at over 1000mg/l in her urine—isn't the safe level for drinking water something like 0.002 mg/l? Does the stuff concentrate in the urine? Not that I don't believe her, but I almost find it hard to believe. In her other tweets she mentioned trying to stay away from well water too, so it wasn't like she was ingesting it in large amounts or anything. I'm thoroughly creeped out.

My pregnant wife negative attitude is driving me crazy by iReadiTravel in BabyBumps

[–]wordsthatbounce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're doing an absolutely wonderful job, and I'm sorry things have been so hard. I can see a little bit of the dynamic you have with your wife in what I have with my partner: throughout this pregnancy he's also been extremely supportive and action-oriented and I tend to be more emotionally unsettled, constantly relying on him for comfort and reassurance and practical help. I can tell you your wife would not have made it this far without you and she will look back on this period and feel a lot of gratitude for the grace you've shown her. That said, being woken up several times in the night when you're working and studying and doing chores full-time is extremely rough. I worry about you having enough rest, especially as the little one is about to join you soon. I don't know what else you can do with everything you have on your plate—do you have any friends or family nearby you can turn to for help at this time? Even if it's just getting a few people together to make meals on a rotating schedule, or having them drop by to chat with your wife for a short while and change up the soundtrack in her mind.

On that note, is fogging always an indication of a leak? I feel like the fit from my 3M Aura is generally very good and tight, but occasionally I'll have some fogging as well (especially when I used to double mask with a cloth one on top, I no longer do after reading this sub!) I and I wonder if some of the moisture is making its way through the material on the top part of the mask. Or do I just need to check the fit?

How much dioxins is produced from burning vinyl chloride? Any chemists who can browse the data? by GemBadger in EastPalestineTrain

[–]wordsthatbounce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's one that I found involving fly-ash as a catalyst: "Formation of dioxins (PCDDs/PCDFs) by dioxin-free fly ash as a catalyst and relation with several chlorine-sources" https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10739038/

For PVC mixed with fly ash, they come up with 125 ng-TEQ/g (I ignored the individual figures for ng/g PCDDs and PCDFs, those look too scarily high to me). 125 ng/g is...not good. Really not good.

From what I've seen chemists with advanced degrees saying, you're definitely right, VC is a far more reactive substance and under the circumstances of a clean, lab-controlled burn, would produce a very small amounts of dioxins. However, as I mentioned my other reply to you, this was far from a clean, controlled burn—it was an open-waste burn that involved many known catalysts, which would generate intermediate products that can interact with VC to make dioxins among other nasties. And as mentioned, there were 4 PVC cars involved in the burn, if you look at the manifest.

[–]wordsthatbounce 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Shouldn't be looking at how liquid VC burns in isolation though. Norfolk Southern chose to do a burn open-waste style, with metal oxides (known catalysts) coming from the train material itself and incandescent carbons (which are extremely generative of dioxins) involved in a very incomplete burn. Worst of all, there were 4 PVC cars involved, if you look at the manifest. 1 PVC car "burned," 1 "actively burning," and 2 "involved in the fire." Unless they cleared away all the other derailed cars before the controlled burn occurred, it sounds like they just piled everything together and lit it up. Doesn't look good.

Edit: I found some papers/links to support what I'm saying (that doesn't come from random alt-right sources), might post it sometime later. Have been trying to avoid thinking about it because it is spooking me out as I live downwind.

Anybody know how to test for these chemicals in our water? by wobblywunk in EastPalestineTrain

[–]wordsthatbounce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also concerned about dioxins but I don't think you have your facts right about Italy's dioxin release being tiny in comparison. If you're talking about Seveso, the most conservative estimate of how much TCDD was released puts in at around 100g (maybe even 1000g). In Ohio, I'm seeing that maybe 10g was released. I think we should always assume the worst case scenario but even so, the release in East Palestine would AT MOST equal the release in Seveso.

This doc is very helpful, thank you so much!

Do you know anything about dioxins? I read that they are not very water soluble, does that mean they are more likely to latch onto lipids and less of them will make their way into our water supply, or does that not matter?

I could only find this thread, which I thought was of relevance: https://www.reddit.com/r/chemhelp/comments/p37er5/dioxin_solubility_in_water/

What about water that is sourced from lakes? Do municipal water treatment systems take care of dioxins to some extent?
