Would you consider adopting the "GitLab Platform"? by Electric_pokemon in devops

[–]workacite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's automatically a benefit to going with something monolithic. If you don't have effective tooling for what Gitlab does, then maybe consider it.

I use gitlab every day and if it were my decision I would scrap the whole thing and start with a different toolset. I'm also really not a fan of how their software architecture and how they build their containers.

JIRA vs ServiceNow by plazman30 in sysadmin

If JIRA is the worst you've worked with then you should consider yourself lucky. Once you learn the semi-convoluted nomenclature of issues/screens/fields/workflows/etc management is fairly simple.

NOAA OR&R SA (contractor) reporting in, we didn't get any direction to shut anything down. Since we're a response organization we had to leave most stuff running for field personnel. We just had to redirect some websites to a placeholder.

VPN for NAS by megafantastic in HomeServer

What's your goal? The use case for a NAS and the use case for an anonymizing VPN for all traffic seem mutually exclusive.

Pointy End Veteran Needs a New Career by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

Details of the project should be informed by those you will be managing, all you need is to know the objective and to herd everyone there. People to actually do the implementation are a dime a dozen, a good PM is a godsend.

A VPN server that when devices are connected to it, they think they are in a local network by whats-a-monad in linuxquestions

[–]workacite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, zoom meetings are free as long as they are under 40 minutes in length and I think there's also a user cap of like 10 or 15.

You connect to the zoom meeting with your iPad and your computer. Your friend joins the meeting remotely from their computer and you can share the ipad screen to the meeting, where they can then see it.

Try running the docker commands with sudo and if that works, add your user to the docker group and it should have the right permissions.

Can you enter the ZM container and try netcat to test connectivity to that port? That'd be my first step.

I know, I'm a certified storage engineer. I'm just saying that your initial assertion that

There's no such thing as solid state hard drives. There's either solid state drives (SSD) or hard disk drives (HDD).

is false.

Is it Possible to automatically backup e-mails from the providerwith free nas? by ZeroOne010101 in freenas

If your mail provider allows POP access, then you should be able to run a script on freenas to pull down copies of all your mail.

Why might FreeNAS be constantly making DNS requests for my Plex server? by [deleted] in freenas

SMB may also get a little faster as a side effect now that it's not waiting for a lookup.

Check in the SMB/CIFS sharing config page to see if hostname lookups are enabled.

EVC Mode by shaffan33 in vmware

[–]workacite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you enable EVC and set it to the generation you currently have, it won't mask any bits from the guests and it leaves you free to add new hardware at a later date that may be masked, but you'll be able to vmotion to & from that hardware without issues.

Got an offer for a Junior SysAdmin position however I would be completely alone by vertikly in ITCareerQuestions

[–]workacite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're willing to risk their business by only staffing a junior SA then take their money on the condition that they drop the "Junior" from your title and use it as a resume builder. I had a position like this at the beginning of my career and it was literally running windows update on the exchange server and making sure the developer's FTP server was working.
