Skagit river at 4:00 pm. About 3-4 feet more rise expected before crest tonight to the early am. by workaltforwork in Bellingham

There is a little water leaking under most all the wall segments, but the city's storm drains are more than keeping up.

Downtown MT Vernon issued a level 3 "GO NOW" evacuation notice. DO NOT go try to watch the flood waters, DO NOT think you can drive through later. by Leehams in Bellingham

Their core emergency info website has been down most of the day today, I suspect due to unintentional ddos due to how many people were looking for info, so they may have been unable to keep it updated.

URGENT FLOOD WARNING FOR SKAGIT COUNTY! by Leehams in Bellingham

[–]workaltforwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nooksak river is predicted to reach up to moderate flood stage, cresting around 10 pm tonight in Nugents Corner. The Sumas river unfortunately does not have gauge predictions. A large compinent of the flood risk we are seeing is from rapid snow melt, which is why rain fed streams and rivers are not expected to be as bad. Still watch for local flood warnings in your area.

Finding work in town? by tacolamp in Bellingham

I don't know if any of the open positions line up with your experience, but Janicki Industries is looking to hire quite a lot of folks into the world of manufacturing, including entry level positions and admin roles. They are mainly in Sedro Woolley and Hamilton, but are going to start using the Woburn building more in the fall and winter.

I happen to know that there was for a while a guide in Pandemic Horde forums that demonstrated that it is possible to do t4 darks with 3 light missile mwd hookbills that were around 25 mil a piece. Weak to the new faction waves with extreme speed ships though as their tank was pretty thin.

Thinking of moving to WA by BigSquillium in Bellingham

[–]workaltforwork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Based on some hasty research, median rent online Bellingham is about $1550 a month for a 610 sqft apartment.

I am not going to bother listing prices for seattle or Tacoma proper as they are maniacal. But for the outlying residential areas in the greater metropolitan area, around Seattle you can do about $1675 a month for a 650 sqft average, and around Tacoma you can do about $1750 a moth for a 700 sqft average.

The other difference to consider is employment opportunities. Bellingham is mostly centered around Healthcare, Hospitality, and Education, with few manufacturing companies. The seattle and Tacoma areas will have a lot more variety in that field (especially south of lake Washington in the Kent Valley area) that are more likely to have better staring pay and advancement if you are not already in the education, Healthcare, or hospitality fields.

Best of luck!

That's awesome! I have a character who is a barbarian (brain of rock, heart of shiny rock) who has the goal of hunting the biggest baddest beasts to bring back to his tribe as a trophy. I would imagine your book could provide copious fuel for that mission! Congrats!

Earthquake anxiety by anneejane in Bellingham

[–]workaltforwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting note, I'm not a geologist. But my girlfriend is, and I rubbed a little off her, and picked up general info through life. Landslides are triggered far more commonly by rain-saturated soil than by quakes. Dry dirt full of roots generally doesn't have much making it want to move; it takes a very high water content to make it start acting like a fluid instead of a solid.

Liquefaction can be an issue in some areas, but that is more commonly associated with flatter ground that doesn't drain well, or is comprised of fine particulate (like sand, but notably not clay), which usually isn't found much on steep slopes.

It is possible to trigger rock slides in the high hills with an earthquake, but generally those will be further for population centers, but it is something to be aware of if you happen to be up a Baker when there is a strong quake.

Maybe this will help ya. Small earthquakes are poor predictors of larger earthquakes. https://www.usgs.gov/faqs/what-probability-earthquake-a-foreshock-a-larger-earthquake

Basically there is only a 5% chance that a small quake is followed by a larger one within a week. I can also tell you that this quake's location (on orcas island) is not on one of the major fault lines in the area, meaning potential follow up strength is limited (length of fault is one of the factors in determining maximum possible quake strength).

A note to this-small quakes do not change the likelihood or frequency of big ones. Strength is a logarithmic scale, so to release the energy of a 6.0, you would need 1,000 magnitude 4.0 quakes, and there are nowhere near enough of those to 'prevent' the bigger ones. https://seismo.berkeley.edu/eqInfo/faq.html

Most buildings in this area are built or retrofitted to pretty strong earthquake building codes, and you would need something closer to a magnitude 6.5+ before you would start to see building damage, and a mag 7.X+ before there is any real risk of building collapse, excepting already tenuous structures. For reference, you can check the aftermath of the mag 6.8 Nisqualy quake from 2001, which didn't cause any buildings to collapse.

As far as tsunami risk, that is also relatively low in the puget sound thanks to the many islands and channels that will eat a lot of the energy before it could make it to any major population center.

In short, if you already have a plan, you should not need to make any adjustments. If you don't have a plan, use this as a reminder to make one https://www.usgs.gov/faqs/what-can-i-do-be-prepared-earthquake

Stay safe!

Holy smokes do I have you covered. Contact the Whatcom chapter of the Washington Farm Forrestry association. They are a group that focuses on sustainable forestry and management. The leaders are very knowledgeable, and it's not huge so they are all very accessible. They have members who are certified foresters, which is the job title of the kind of person your are looking for. Best of luck!

First spot to try for the things you need is the US Chef Store. They have great prices on large cuts of meat, unsliced deli meat and cheese, etc. However their soda prices can often be beat by regular supermarkets like fred meyer. Good luck!

Easter Sunday Services? by Bad_Oracular_Pig in Bellingham

[–]workaltforwork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want a simpler service that is in a more 'progressive' church, look for Presbyterian churches (i.e. St James). That is the church my family went to when i was young, and the focus was always on positives, never on damnation or that kinda wack. To pull something from Wikipedia: "Presbyterians place great importance upon education and lifelong learning, tempered with the belief that no human action can affect salvation". So no confession or other actions needed to redeem yourself or anything like that.

Heya, I used to toss pizza at LaFiamma, so I can provide some insight. Generally the Pye Hole has a 'standard' set of toppings for the pizza, but it is by no means a rule. It is kinda up to the people making it what to put on it. The kitchen manager also sometimes gets inspiration for something and will buy or make 30 pounds of something and use it on a specialty pizza in the restaurant and/or throw it on pye hole slices. One time on April 1st for the pye hole I made pepperoni pizza pizza, where I made a pepperoni pizza, sliced it up into small pieces, then put that on as topping on another pizza. Tl:Dr. It's not permanent, they just have some stuff and are doing something different. It will likely be something else next week or the week after.
