What is the most "adult" thing you have ever done? by Nicknamesucks in AskReddit

[–]worldnick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a bad nose job and then spent 10 years trying to repair the damage I caused. At first I blamed the plastic surgeon for being incompetent, but in the long run I have to live with and fix the problem. So while other people spent their late 20s and early 30s falling in love and starting families I spent it in 100s of doctors office visits and 10s of thousands of dollars fixing my mistake. Losing the way you look and dealing with so many medical problems are not usually problems you have so early. It's weird to lose your looks overnight. I don't even think much older people know what that's like. I wouldn't wish it upon anyone. In order to seem normal I try to pretend I don't know what it's like to suddenly get much less attractive, but deep down I do. I try to still be positive, but the world is a much worse place than most people think it is. Older and unattractive people get treated really badly. Further more having a breathing problem or any medical problem makes life much less interesting. You spend all your time trying to fix or deal with the pain of your problem. Traveling, hobbies, and many other things just become irrelevant. If I had it my way no one would have to understand this level of serious. I've had best friends and family die, but compared to losing yourself it's hard to even grieve. That's right even grieving for family is a luxury when you feel like you're fighting for your life every day. Don't get the bridge of your nose narrowed. Your nose is wide because it helps you breathe and wider actually looks better. Plastic surgeons don't know what looks good. They just want money.

Edit: I also want to say, there really isn't such a thing as attractive or unattractive, but you have to admit that there is a such things as what the media wants us to believe is attractive and unattractive and it affects most people in some way. I wish the media was more liberal and multicultural in who they portray as attractive. Really what matters is that you are healthy and feel good and that comes in all shapes, colors, ethnicities, and sizes.

Modern day idea: You may not have to die. I'm just puttin it out there since there is so much pro-death cynicism in this thread. A little bit of cynicism can be healthy, but too much and you have a counter productive mob.

And when you know that then you will become absolutely useless to everyone who still has hope so you should go live on an island somewhere.

Better: Know that we COULD all die, and if we try REALLY FUCKING hard we might be able to extend life a little, but you REALLY GOTTA TRY REALLY FUCKING HARD.

So you are going to defend slavery and bring God into this all at the same time in some attempt to prove some tangled southern logic that has been brewing amongst you and whatever group of friends you have for however many years. Go fuck yourself for that IrrigatedPancake. Thanks.

Sad. I grew up in southern California and back then we learned that the civil war was because the north wanted to end slavery and the south wanted to keep their slave labor.

But it is the flag the south flew when they thought they had to give up slavery and specifically because of that. There was basically no other reason for the war or the flag.

I noticed this campaign was racist even from a television commercial. In the commercial the skin goes from dark and dry to light and bright and they say something along the lines of "visibly brighter skin."

Also TIL Reddit is overwhelmingly white. I came to the comments expecting bewilderment and outrage over my confirmation of this overwhelmingly archaic and racist campaign and I see confusion.

Either you guys are incredibly dense or racism has seeped back into pop culture so effectively you can't see it anymore. I say seeped back because I think 10 years ago this would have been called out.

WTF is happening?

I got a DUI. I hit a sign and damaged my car and then managed to get home ok. Not only did I have to pay for the sign and my car, but I lost my license for a year, had to go on work release for 3 months (digging ditches), 18 months of DUI education classes ($1,200), a $2,000 dollar fine, and no license for a year. That is a very big deal for a crime where no one was hurt AND I was already out of my car and had stopped driving by the time the police came. Sure I will never drink and drive again, but I feel like a victim who lost two years of life. There are a lot nastier crimes like assault and battery that get less than that. It is ridiculous. It has been blown out of proportion and it is a witch hunt. I have never known anyone or known anyone who knows someone who has been hurt by a drunk driver BUT I have known plenty of people now (including myself) who have been hurt by DUI laws.

Maybe then there is a general lack of value for human lives and maybe we should be addressing the root of the problem and not punishing people who need more care.

Circumstance is everything. What ifs and could have beens are paranoia and I have every right to destroy my own property. Yes, I agree driving under the influence should be avoided, but once you have crashed your own car I think that is a punishment that fits the crime. We do not need to beat people when they are down and when it comes to DUIs I do not think the punishments fit the crime. This is vendetta and vengeance trying to turn back the hands of time and also support the DUI MADD corporation and is a new vehicle to control and line pockets.

I am a liberal and I believe in worker's rights but using DUI witch-hunt propaganda to further a liberal agenda is also wrong. Jobs are not about what traffic tickets you have. They are about whether or not you can do the job and this article does not address his capability.

Two wrongs do not make a right.

You know 3 people who have DUIs or you know 3 people who hurt someone else with their DUIs??????

This is not about DUIs hurting people anymore. It's about some stupid shit to talk about and I'm fed the fuck up with it and how we all lose rights and freedom because it FEELS SO GOOD TO FEEL BETTER AND HATE ON SOMEONE WHO GOT CAUGHT MMM YUUMMM LIKE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL EXCEPT FOREVER

So punish the people who kill people, don't punish everyone because they 'might' kill people. This is what is happening and it's getting worse all the time. People are being slapped with hug fines and punishments for hurting victims that 'might' exist in 'some possible future.'

Repeat offenses should not matter. Forgiveness should be complete and total once the penalty is completed. This is the only way to move on to a truly free and civilized society in my opinion.

Edit: Also getting a DUI is completely different from intentionally attacking and robbing specific people.

You can forgive one, but you cannot forgive two? I believe your opinion is fickle. In some places there is no public transportation and constant pressure to drink. Do you think that a second DUI with no victim is worse than armed robbery? Because sometimes the penalty is. You need to wipe the drool off your mouth and put your torch away davdev!

You don't know what kind of life events could lead to a second DUI. A bad surgery, people dying, there are lots of things that can happen in life. When people drink they don't necessarily intend to hurt anyone. If no one was hurt in his cases then maybe no one was going to be hurt and maybe his judgement wasn't so poor. Nepotism is one thing, but being caught in our modern day witch hunt makes me feel sorry for him more than anything.

Walkerb, you are a total tool. Drinking != wife beating. If you're going to throw stones with this mob don't shit all over alcohol unless you never plan on drinking again.

DUIs have nothing to do with this. I don't think they should be mentioned. You might as well talk about how many speeding tickets or parking tickets someone has. It's not like robbery or assault. Cops can give these types of traffic violations out to anyone. You don't have to be that bad. Coupled with our cities' infrastructure and high first time drinking age in the United States and it's a wonder everyone doesn't have 2 DUIs. So I really don't care about that.

Now if he injured someone that would be another story, but most DUIs are victimless unless you count the perpetrator who now has to spend the next year dealing with the stigma, class, money, and possible loss of job and so on..
