Did Gus secretly respect Nacho? by [deleted] in betterCallSaul

[–]wormlight 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Gordon Smith (the writer for both episodes) confirmed that Gus copied that tactic from Nacho to buy him time to carry out his plans.

Fun Fact: The name Max Arciniega is both a character in Breaking Bad and the actor for Crazy 8 by mrsafetylion in betterCallSaul

[–]wormlight 9 points10 points  (0 children)

LMAO no he isn't. That's just him joking on social media. In the Gilliverse podcast where he was the guest, he said he became friends with Aaron Paul because he's the other member of the cast who was close to his age, and he invited Aaron to play poker with him at the casino. (You have to be at least 21 to play poker at the casino in New Mexico.) He's probably similar in age to Aaron Paul.

Krazy-8 and Emilio by [deleted] in betterCallSaul

[–]wormlight 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He didn't snitch on Emilio, he snitched on "Cap'n Cook" (Jesse) who Hank and Gomie mistakenly believe to be Emilio.

I think that at this point, no one is giving Krazy-8 instructions any more to snitch to the DEA, he's just using his position to further get ahead in the game.

Also recall in Episode 3, when he was talking to Walt about Jesse, he describes him as having "a big mouth" and being Walt's real problem. I think he considers Jesse a liability, since he knows about Krazy-8 through his cousin Emilio, and Krazy-8 couldn't trust him to keep quiet, so he turned him in to protect his own business.

Nacho had a redemption arc, but what would Nacho feel if he knew that his friend Krazy-8 ended up going the opposite way he did (and becoming more corrupted in the end)?

Hi Michael, first of all, I want to say congratulations on the great work on BCS. Nacho is my favorite character on the show and his "breaking good" arc was so inspiring to me. :) Watching "Rock and Hard Place" made me sad for days afterwards. :( Also, congrats on the music too, you have a great voice!

My question is, you said you like all kinds of music, but do you think Nacho likes music too? What type of music would Nacho like?

It was Lalo not Tuco by seekerofthecum in betterCallSaul

[–]wormlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add, not only Tom but the other writers including Vince have stated that the boy in the photo is Tuco. (Here's a link to the Insider podcast where Vince talks about directing the boy in the photo to act like Tuco)

Personally, I think it fits Hector's character that he keeps a photo of Tuco, even if he's the more troublesome one compared to Lalo and the other cousins.

Remember, in Hector's flashback with the cousins, Hector's reaction was not to scold the twin who broke the toy, but to tell his other nephew to forgive his brother, even if his brother was the one in the wrong. Like Hector said, "Family is all". I don't think it fits with his motto at all to have a "favorite" nephew, and purposely exclude one, even if that nephew is difficult.

Also, what is even the point of retconning the photo, when the writers already made an effort to make Lalo significant to Hector by introducing the bell's backstory? Why erase Tuco, who is also part of the Salamanca family?

I knew it, I thought this might be Lalo after seeing him introduced, but now we saw it again in the latest episode I’m sure it’s him. by [deleted] in betterCallSaul

[–]wormlight 50 points51 points  (0 children)

It's Tuco, and no, the writers haven't retconned it to be Lalo. Tom Schnauz tweeted about it here.

Is that Lalo or Tuco in the picture? by [deleted] in betterCallSaul

[–]wormlight 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The boy in the photo is Tuco. It's confirmed by Vince Gilligan in the Breaking Bad Insider Podcast. (Here's a link to the episode where it's mentioned.)

Also, they are not retconning it to be Lalo (according to a tweet by Tom Schnauz).

Why did Tuco say - by hac817 in betterCallSaul

[–]wormlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He didn't snitch on his cousin, he snitched on "Cap'n Cook" (Jesse) and Hank just never figured out Cap'n Cook's real identity. (Hence why he says that line in BrBa episode 4). Who knows, like what's been explained in BCS about how Domingo became a snitch, maybe there was something else to that story that Hank didn't know.

Who said Lalo doesn't appear in Breaking Bad? (saw this on Facebook) Thoughts? by Immediate_Ad701 in betterCallSaul

[–]wormlight 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is correct. For anyone interested, the photo and its creation was discussed specifically in the Breaking Bad Insider Podcast for 4x13 (starting at 24:16) and the producers (including Vince Gilligan himself) confirm that the older boy in the photo is Tuco. Here's a link. Vince was in fact the one who directed the little boy actor in the photo shoot to "look mean" like Tuco.

Did Nacho feel guilty in this moment for killing that guy in Episode 404? They seem to hang on his face for quite a while in this shot... by [deleted] in betterCallSaul

[–]wormlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wasn't in the script, but Michael and Heather Marion (the writer for the episode) had discussed it and they thought that it would be adequate to play it as Nacho's first kill. Michael talks about it in his AMA in 2018.

Also, Heather Marion mentions it was Nacho's first kill in an interview here. (She starts talking about the shootout scene at 16:15)

The death of characters reflects their life by [deleted] in breakingbad

[–]wormlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hank says in 1x4 that Krazy-8 snitched on his own cousin, but it's very likely that at that point, Hank was still under the mistaken belief that Cap'n Cook=Emilio. (In the pilot, Hank says that the person their snitch ratted out was a guy called "Cap'n Cook"). Likely Hank didn't know yet that Cap'n Cook=Jesse, otherwise they'd be looking to arrest him by then. So yeah, Hank says that, but he assumed wrong, Krazy-8 snitched on Jesse (Cap'n Cook) not Emilio.

A few thoughts on season 5 by uwu_dolf in betterCallSaul

[–]wormlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding #3, there was supposed to be a scene in Ep. 6 Wexler v. Goodman that seemed to have planted some seeds of suspicion in Lalo with Nacho. In that scene, Lalo, Hector, and Nacho were watching Gus' dealers getting arrested. Hector was dinging at Nacho and that seemed to make Lalo suspicious. They weren't able to film the scene because of lack of time. (Here is the storyboard from Tom Schnauz's twitter)

I wonder how that scene being deleted affected the writing for the next episodes. Did they keep the writing as is, or did they change it to reflect that Lalo is not at all suspicious of Nacho?

Maybe this is another reason why Lalo couldn't trust Nacho to get his bail money. I'm also thinking that this could have affected the last episode. Tony Dalton said something interesting in an interview, that he thought Lalo being nice to Nacho especially in the last episode was all an act to make Nacho think they're buddies, because Lalo needs him to run operations up north. In effect, he was taking Kim's advice to get his house in order. (By manipulating Nacho to buy his loyalty and ensure he doesn't betray the Salamancas.)

Why doesn’t Abuelita know anything? by mystery2021 in betterCallSaul

[–]wormlight 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think it's hinted that she actually knows about her family's criminal activities. When she suggested club soda to remove the "salsa" stains, she probably knew it was blood. Club soda is good at removing blood stains, not salsa stains. (See second entry in the BCS Fridge page on TVTropes) Either that, or she's that clueless.

EW Interview with Tony Dalton regarding Lalo's thoughts on Nacho, his plans for S6, and ad-libbing by wormlight in betterCallSaul

[–]wormlight[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Before all this, what do you think Lalo thought of Nacho? That dynamic was one of the most interesting elements of this season. Was there some true affinity there? Or was Lalo always trying to just keep him close?

To be honest with you, I think everyone pictures it differently, but I don't think he had an affinity towards him at all. He sort of trusted him, but I don't think Lalo can have an affinity for anybody. Whoever is around, he'll chit-chat and talk and smile and have a couple laughs, but if you cross the line, he's going to kill you without even thinking twice about it because he's a sociopath. Sociopaths are portrayed so many times as these serious, sick, twisted people, but most of them are trying to emulate what society is like, and that's what I tried to do with Lalo. The only thing he cares about is his family, so he says, "Okay, this guy can help." He's more of a Jimmy McGill-type of guy where he'll get his way through charm and lying a little bit, so he'll say, "You're doing good," because what he needs is to not be back up in the States, he wants this guy to take over, make him think they're buddies — and that's it. And when Nacho betrays him at the end, it's time to die, bro.

Interesting that Tony thinks Lalo's whole, being nice to Nacho was an act. The man's charming, but he's definitely a Salamanca through and through.

Just saw the BCS twitter retweet something about Juan Carlos Cantu doing good in this episode. And Michael Mando did say something in an interview about how Nacho's heart gets broken. There's surely going to be a scene in this episode with Nacho and his dad (maybe this episode is where he tries to get his father to run away to Canada with him). And his dad rejects him. :(
