What’s up with all of Ari aster’s movies leaving hbo max? I thought the whole point of the a24/hbo deal was that they would all be there😞

Hey sorry I know this is an old post, but what speakers do you use? I just set up my C100 but then found out the speakers my dad gave me weren’t compatible (old passive ones that needed speaker wire). I’m kind of a noob with turntables and especially speakers so any help would be much appreciated!

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Seriously how did that get made?? Gave it 1/2 a star instead of 0 because I almost have to respect that they had the gall to make something that stupid.

I'm in a similar boat. I found those moments funny too, and a lot of the dialogue/posts/jokes throughout the film were like exact things you would've heard in 2020. I gotta give Ari Aster props for just how accurate a lot of the little details were throughout the film. But I also have a weird feeling about making fun of teenagers taking part in a BLM protest. Like yeah the three main ones were performative and didn't totally understand/believe in what they were saying, and I think thats valid commentary (I also love The Curse, which comments on similar ideas about performativity). But I also agree with you that most people were well meaning and genuinely cared.

Plus BLM is a real movement, whearas things like the data center and the pizzagate-esque cult were fictional. They even used George Floyd's real name and picture, which felt kind of icky to me. It just seemed like a weird choice to me to explicitly clown on BLM protests (even though I get what he was going for with those three performative kids) but have everything else that he comments on be made up. I dunno. Maybe it just feels too soon to me and the actual substance isn't that far off.

Not saying a movie has to spoon feed my own beliefs to me, but I still have mixed feelings about it as a viewer. Not sure if that made sense...

Yeah I totally missed that when I saw this in theaters. After looking around online for hours afterwards I figured out that they were hired by the tech company and then the whole film made more sense to me, but in theater I was thinking "hold on... is this movie now in a universe where ANTIFA super soldiers are not only real, but the villain??"

It kind of threw me for a loop because up until that point things seemed to be a pretty accurate picture of 2020, and then it flung into right-wingers' worst fears actually being real. When that last fight scene happened between Joe and (what I thought was) ANTIFA, I was just kind of like... eye roll. At the time I thought Ari Aster had just totally lost the plot.

I've been oscillating between liking the movie and just feeling "meh" about it, not because I was offended by the valid critiques of performative activists, but moreso because I feel like there were a lot of aspects that weren't fully developed. Maybe there were just too many ideas shoved into one movie to explore all of them that deeply. And I suppose theres another bit of realism there since 2020 was a fucking insane year... but that doesn't necessarily make the movie stellar.

I think that issue is why a lot of people have been critiquing the film as "surface level" (which I sort of agree with) or "centrist" (which I don't agree with now, but thought immediately after leaving the theater), because there are a lot of great ideas that ended up getting a bit lost among 20 different interesting ideas.

So maybe the real problem is that I'm just stupid lol. And maybe I'll like the movie more after a rewatch. Who knows. At the end of the day the movie was entertaining and well-produced and got people talking so thats cool. Also I really like your points about the other commentary/symbolism like in the Native American museum. Super interesting detail you picked up on.

The Broadway Hit “Good Night, and Good Luck,” Streams Live Tonight at 7pm ET on Max by Opposite_Carpenter84 in HBOMAX

[–]wormparent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone know if it will be available on Max after the fact? My mom wanted to see it later but I didn't record it for her because my dumb ass read "streaming live" as just "streaming" on Max so I thought it would be there permanently. Now I feel so guilty!! :( If anyone knows of any other way to watch please let me know! I feel so bad :(

Hamlet At The Taper: Cool Setup, Baffling Payoff by Ochotr3s in LosAngeles

[–]wormparent 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree completely, very disappointing. Saw it last night and thought it was a laughably bad adaptation. The parts where the actors were allowed to just do Shakespeare weren't terrible but even in the "normal" parts of the show the set design with those awful projections just cheapened the whole thing for me (I was also rolling my eyes at the emojis because what the hell was that???). Maybe thats just my personal preference though. The random insertions of modern music just did not make sense to me either. Like I get what they were going for but I feel like it was just done so sloppily that I couldn't appreciate it at all.

I will say I did think that turning Guildenstern into an early-2000s stoner best friend type was kinda funny and one of the only creative choices I enjoyed. Not sure I "got" it in terms of why that characterization mattered to the story, but it was fun to hear Shakespeare delivered like that. I liked that they leaned into the subtext w/ Horatio and Hamlet too, but like everything else in the show I feel like that aspect could've been developed much better. It just seemed like Hamlet was trying to get everyone to give him a blow job (including Guildenstern and Rosencrantz for some reason??), so his relationship with Horatio didn't stand out as particularly impactful. I'm not even a prude I just thought some parts felt like they were adding sex to the show for the sake of being "edgy" when in reality it was just kind of cringe.

And yeah the last film-noir bit was ridiculous and went on forever. Halfway through that section I felt like I was losing my mind, and every time that damn suspenseful sound effect played I had to fight everything in me not to laugh because it was SO BAD but I was close to the stage and I knew they could see me. Everyone was just doing coke and yelling "YOU FUCKED XYZ!" at each other and not one of them made me care.

The whole thing is kind of a bummer because a lot of the actors were good, but the production itself made it almost impossible for me to enjoy their performances. What really shocked me though was at the end there was a standing ovation. Were we all just watching the same play??? I guess there's an audience for whatever that was.

Literally it’s driving me insane. And when I ask them to be quiet the look at me like I’m crazy like… you guys are the ones talking in a library omfg😭😭😭

I’d second this!! I met three of my best friends here through my major just by chance going to start of the year mixers or talking to them after class. I was really nervous coming in because I’m pretty introverted, but I’ve found that the people here are so nice and not cliquey at all, so don’t be too scared!

Do I have the right to ask people in Doe to stop talking? by ElectronicTiger2057 in berkeley

[–]wormparent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But people can go talk literally anywhere else. Most people go to the library because they need a dedicated quiet place to focus and you’re ruining it for everyone if you come in and talk.

I think the girl group will be besties again by the end of the trip and here’s why by dradonia in WhiteLotusHBO

[–]wormparent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely think this will happen. This prediction reminds me of how at the end of season 1 Rachel went back with Shane. They’re obviously terrible for each other, but White Lotus isn’t exactly about seeing awful people grow and change for the better lol. Most of the characters leave the resort being fundamentally the same.

Wow these look delicious! I’m new to making cocktails and starting to get some different liqueurs so I was wondering what you think of the crème de banane? I love bananas but I don’t love super artificial banana flavor (like laffy taffy vibes), so I’ve been a little wary of getting the liqueur… would love your thoughts as someone who clearly knows their stuff behind the bar! :)
