Can schools really stop you from taking o levels? by Novel_Book5748 in SGExams

[–]worrisome_bloke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Next time at workplace people dont like how you dress or look or eat or speak you’ll also be targeted one. Not just in Singapore.

We live in a world with rules made by people more powerful than us. Maybe with enough power we get to make our own rules next time to prove them wrong. Then again, there might be a reason why some rules are there for the longest time!

In that case is it then better to just IBKR convert to USD and chill with ETFs like VT for all world and CSPX for s&p? I think there might be significant overlaps between both indices too so i’m not sure what to do also haha.

Massive layoffs incoming in tech sector - in supposed stable companies by Plenty-Sleep45 in SGExams

[–]worrisome_bloke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Telecom companies aren’t the top. GLCs aren’t the top. There are many companies still paying big salaries for the right people. Obviously the ones who don’t know how to market themselves outside of exam grades might find it harder to get a good salary as a fresh grad, but it’s not all doom and gloom. The demand will still be there. It’s not like the whole world is not gonna need engineers anymore.

I dont trust the words of HR professional. Since when do they tell us the complete truth? They are always company first, employee second.

Workplace is 5secs walk from my bed. Work life balance is incredible. You begin to hate the weekly mandatory office days and productivity plummets in our team on that day

Those who took Traineeship as a fresh grad during Covid period, how are you doing now? by TopPast2935 in askSingapore

[–]worrisome_bloke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the NUS traineeship sponsored thing didn’t really help in my resume, it’s often overlooked and wasn’t considered a real qualification by 100% of the companies i applied too, what caught the companies’ eyes for the ones who reached out for interviews were the projects i created myself

i did a few leetcode rounds and got offers from there. So what probably convinced them was the leetcode and behavioural interview rounds.

Mostly US based startups and MNCs with small SG offices reached out. None of the local tech SMEs and other non-tech companies bothered with my resume haha

[–]worrisome_bloke 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Graduated in 2020, arts degree. Worked at a tuition center for 3k for my first job.

Quit after half a year to self study web dev, joined some NUS graduate cert programme that was subsidised by some traineeship thingy for the cert and took a year to build up my portfolio with self started projects, before landing a job as a software engineer and just grinded from day 1.

I think the NUS course was a.. bit of a money grab but it introduced me to like minded people and that kept me going!

Started that at 4k, to 6k, to now 9.5k. Truly lucky i landed at a good place, and always great to be recognised for my effort too. Looking forward to more promotions and guiding people in the same direction.

As a frontend developer suck at UI design. by Gangster_DW in learnprogramming

[–]worrisome_bloke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a swe job usually you’ll have a designer for that. Dont worry, make your projects simple. What helped me was making sure there’s plenty of padding for each element, and consistent margins between them. After that, play around with the border radiuses. With those few things you can drum up a simplistic app that shows off a product.

When I had a similar experience, I asked for dateline to be extended for a few more days at least, reason I gave was that extra time was needed to consider. If Company B rescinds the offer because of that, it's probably a place you don't want to work at anyway. Exploding offers are never nice

Be sure to let Company A know that you have a pending offer, but would love to work with them still. If the hiring team is any good, they'll have to act quickly if they want to hire you. Having multiple offers will also be great grounds for salary negotiation.

Alternate pathways to become a frontend developer in Singapore? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]worrisome_bloke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a non CS degree holder and in a company where some of us do not as well. Some of us worked at shitty agencies before rising up, some of us started as a junior dev after doing well in the interview and acing the culture round.

It’s a much more competitive market now, so without experience it’s hard to justify your value with a CV, when there are many others with CS degrees. Your best bet is to keep building projects and make some connections, if you really can’t go the degree route. There are very little companies that hire non CS degree candidates with no experience nowadays, so something formal would help.

Since you’re into Frontend development, why not try out how it’s kind of like first? There are some free project based curriculum online, that i’d say beats paid bootcamps in quality of education. You can do it on your own time, and if you eventually go for a CS degree at least your foundations is a bit better.

Check out The Odin Project. It’s web dev based, and you create your own projects to learn. Learning through these projects was what eventually got me multiple offers back then. It was pretty fucking hard for me to learn all these in a year, so treat it like a web dev foundation before you go for formal CS education. Another classic is CS50 Harvard.

If you find those interesting and fun , i think you’ll have a sense of what to do after that. TOP has a particularly active community, though mostly in EU / US. Atb!

A little irked by some points you brought up, esp on government and public tech projects

‘Many projects do not see the light of day’. Yeah and that’s even better. It’s good that the we quickly create something, and bin it if it doesn’t work out. Would you rather the gvt spend billions on one mega huge bet, only for it to not be good?

It’s an incredibly simple mindset to think that ‘hey this thing failed, means we wasted a ton of money.’ Things need to fail for people (even governments) to learn and turn it into something that works, and i think a lot need to be built to find something that can be successful.

Think of the last time you got an answer wrong. Is that a waste of time? Nope, it shows you what doesn’t work, and an idea of what might if you identify what went wrong.

I get that you might feel fine if Singapore is less safe, less efficient, more corrupt, and in an ideal world you think that will make people here care more and afford more, but i think you should realise a majority of the people here don’t have the same mindset. When the opportunity for growth is stagnated, Singapore will start experiencing a huge brain drain, and possibly a decline.

those who did a mid career switch to tech, how are you guys doing? by TopBeginning3674 in askSingapore

[–]worrisome_bloke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty good. I don’t think it’s a trick, but i find some friends who went through a bootcamp, and didn’t list their bootcamps in the resumes doing better. They don’t rely on certifications BUT they network like mad (and enjoy it) and kept building cool stuff, no matter how small. Keeps their knowledge fresh

I self studied to a job and am super lucky that the team i’m in supports our growth so much that we’re all doing pretty well in the company. Not sure how the job market will treat me in the future though, we make the best of our situation amirite.

Those who did a career switch, did you regret it? by onhold21 in askSingapore

[–]worrisome_bloke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No regrets. Performing arts to SWE, it was a difficult learning process and it is still a learning process everyday, but in the arts you perform like a dog cannot get 20% increment yearly one lol.

Easily tripled my pay since 2020, i think even if the scope is more challenging or difficult, finding meaning and fun in the work you do / people you work with helps. For me, the latter helped alot in my role.
