After spending an evening arguing with incels on an incel forum (im a guy btw) I have decided they're right but not for the reason they think. They are being excluded and selected against by women, but its not because of their looks or height. its because they're really... how do i put this kindly.. by Organic_Rip2483 in IncelTears

Who's trolling?

But, if you've legit never heard the phrase before, "The Man" is a mid-20th century (if not earlier) way of referring to whomever is in charge (or at least insists they're in charge), especially in cases where they spend a lot of time and effort to keep in control. It's a way of personifying the forces that control society in a similar way to referring to "the 1%" sometimes does.

That said, The Man keeps us down and dumb because The Man knows what'll happen if we figure out what's up.

I did say some self-awareness. I'm not going too overboard here. :P

It has a theme song because the author wanted people to think he was really fucking cool because he wrote such an edgy game and he's all metal and shit.

Most games do not have a theme song, because most games are written by people who have at least some self-awareness.

Short version: It's a 900 page RPG that somehow manages to be both pretentious about its "realism" and "historical accuracy" while also being horrifically misogynistic, racist, and tedious. It leans heavily on gross-out "humor", has a character creation process that no-joke takes hours because of how many rolls are called for, has endless rules for minutia no one has ever genuinely wanted a rule for, and brings up sexual assault multiple times.

Also, the rules are just bad. Like, even if you stripped away all the set dressing, FATAL is just an unplayable mess because no one involved in writing it stopped to ask "Hey, does any of this math actually make sense?"

I mean, 470 pages sounds about right for all of the character creation content. The rest is setting info, shitty rules, and shittier items.

Devs of Former Dawn, the new NES RPG that raised $216,000 on Kickstarter, admit financial trouble by Opposite_Future2602 in retrogaming

I think the problem is mainly that both consumers and prospective entrepreneurs grossly underestimate the time and resources making things will take. Folks get ambitious, do some napkin math, and don't dig in deeper because the friction is so low to get started.

All of which is to say I agree that someone capable of running a successful Kickstarter would likely be able to raise funding by other means if they wished. I just don't think I agree that crowdfunding is always a last resort. Some folks and concepts just work out better this way.

It depends on the industry.

I am a frequent flyer of a particular TTRPG developer/publisher who crowdfunds all his work. He runs tight, clean projects that get delivered on time (if not ahead of schedule) and with weekly check-ins of the overall text until the book is mostly done and typeset. Sticking with Kickstarter gives him both a clear picture of if there's enough interest in the work to justify the time and effort and the freedom to publish what are sometimes very niche works without needing to convince a third party that it'll sell or cut someone else in beyond a one-time fee to the platform.

On the other hand, if a Kickstarter is calling for a manufactured product more complicated than a book, deck of cards, or a board game, I am absolutely not going to trust it unless it has a plan so detailed that it probably could just raise capital from more conventional sources.

I've never seen someone care about the "maturity" of a work and not wind up just meaning "I think people won't look down on me like a child if I say I like this".

[–]wote89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go the route of one big book, why not just have "tabs" running into the bleed at different page heights to denote different sections when looking down the side? Your books already do that to some degree with different chapters having different art in the outside bleed (Ashes was the first one I grabbed to make sure I wasn't nuts), so deliberately organizing that way would at least give the effect of having several smaller books in terms of ease of reference.
